A Longing to Belong: Reflections on Faith, Identity, and Race Kindle Edition

5.0 5.0 out of 5 stars 7 ratings

Growing up in the only Korean family in a Minnesota town, Michelle Lee-Barnewall has felt the pain of racial discrimination and the resulting identity confusion that follows. Through the telling of her personal story, she seeks to transcend the current divide between those who emphasize social justice concerns and those who believe these concerns compromise the core of the gospel.

A Longing to Belong integrates a biblical worldview and personal experience on the topic of race and race relations. Lee-Barnewall writes as both a New Testament scholar and an Asian American who has personally experienced what it means to be racially marginalized, seeking to filter those experiences through the lens of the New Testament and what it has to say to us today about our Christian calling and our identity in Christ as a member of his body.

A Longing to Belong spurs readers to consider what it means to live as racially distinctive people in a fallen world that abounds in misunderstanding and pain and is in desperate need of the gospel of grace, especially as manifested in the redeemed Christian community. This memoir extends the discussion beyond academic discussion of race relations and personal narratives by demonstrating how theology and experience are necessarily intertwined and mutually contribute to our understanding of race and our relationships with each other. Rather than arguing for one "side," Lee-Barnewall shares examples rooted in her own experience in light of an overarching kingdom theology.

Michelle Lee Barnewall's latest book, "A Longing to Belong", is anchored by insightful, thought provoking, wisdom. An authentic and personal journey which examines challenging issues such as race and identity. In a world that is increasingly losing its faith in God, she challenges each of us, including herself, to foster and exude grace. This book will cause you to want to be a better human, a kinder one who tries to see things from a different perspective. Put this on your reading list!

Michelle Lee-Barnewall's book, "A Longing to Belong" is a thought-provoking read on the issues of how and why race should matter from a Christian perspective. It is a worth while read that I highly recommend.

Deeply personal and honest and yet addressing universal and human "longing to belong", the author seamlessly shares her memoir growing up as an ethnic minority in the 20th century US and her scholarly insight into the apostle Paul's letter to the Corinthians, a diverse group of believers in the 1st century.

I enjoyed reading it immensely. I recommend it to anyone who grew up as an ethnic minority in a majority culture and desires to reflect the experience with the Scriptural guidance that the book provides. And this is a good book for those who are interested in and engaged with the ongoing discussion of racial relations in US, particularly among Christians.

Michelle Lee-Barnewall addresses several important topics in this book: How does race matter? What does it mean for believers from different ethnic backgrounds to belong in the Body of Christ, and how can we treat one another as members of one family in Christ with love, mutual respect, and acceptance? Michelle does a masterful job of blending Scriptural insights and illustrating it with personal anecdotes. This book helped me to understand and embrace not only my own identity as God's child, but also to understand how I can experience a sense of belonging in God's spiritual family. Highly recommended!

I'm not a super religious perosn but I found this book surprisingly moving. I must read for deep insight into why our current atmosphere is so divisive--but it doesn't have to be. Extra points for a Biblical perspective that can be thought of as fairly universal (ie literary). Very eye opening + highly recommend!!
