The Killing of Gaza: Reports on a Catastrophe Paperback – October 1, 2024
Purchase options and add-ons
Gideon Levy is one of the most respected critics of Israel's apartheid policies against the Palestinian people. He is the outspoken award-winning journalist who has been writing on the conflict for decades.
In The Killing of Gaza he brings together his on-the-ground perspectives of the events leading up to the October 7th attack and the ensuing devastation of Gaza.
His clear-eyed analysis is a vital aperture into current events but he also brings essential historical and political context to the moment. He is unafraid to speak truth to power, and his work is an urgent rebuttal to the propaganda that is distributed through the mainstream press throughout the world.
Levy's words should be read by anyone who wants to get the heart of this most brutal conflict and see for themselves that silence is no longer possible in the face of such atrocity.

Review
—Antony Loewenstein, author of The Palestine Laboratory
"[The Killing of Gaza] shines an important light on a brutal conflict, without pretending to have a resolution for it."
—Kirkus Reviews
"The Killing of Gaza: Reports on a Catastrophe is perhaps the harshest condemnation of Israel's war on Gaza from any Israeli."
—Nathan Robinson, Current Affairs
"In The Killing of Gaza, Levy shows how Israel’s routine debasement of Gazans, now intensified by its war against Hamas, has become a primary cause of violence in the region...It’s fortunate that a few journalists in Haaretz are still able to deliver Israeli readers a powerful critique of the regime’s propaganda—one based on direct Palestinian testimony."
—Benoit Challand, Public Seminar
"[Levy is] a fierce critic of the occupation ... The chapters describing the harsh daily reality of life under occupation are an eye-opener."
—Mark Weiss, Irish Times
"Shows how dreams of collective retribution once found only on the Israeli far right have become mainstream."
—Mark Mazower, Financial Times

- Reviewed in the United States on March 19, 2025Gideon Levy is an incredible, brave, COMPASSIONATE human. I’m so thankful for him in this moment in history. Gaza desperately needed such an vocal Israeli defender. And he let his humanity overcome cultural indoctrination (for the most part) and the pain of truth.
The writing style is not ideal. Moments of sarcasm leave opportunity for wildly misleading quotation. At times, the text doesn’t flow. But this is such a priceless perspective. An irreplaceable piece of journalism bravely documenting unprecedented times. No doubt at the author’s own risk.
It’s heartbreaking. I hope it breaks some hearts open.
Thank you, Gideon, from the bottom of my soul ♥️
- Reviewed in the United States on December 10, 2024Gideon Levy is a journalist who is actually doing his job - he is a treasure in a country steeped in mythology, militarism and colonial atrocities. His first hand accounts are chilling but provide a real glimpse into the reality - all Americans and all Israelis should read this book!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2024Levy is a gifted writer who breaks down the awful truth and consequences of a 75 year occupation. He provides an empathetic glimpse into the lives of Palestinians living in Gaza under a near 20 year total siege and 75 year occupation. Additionally, he provides historical context for the 10/7/23 attacks. Americans and Israelis need to listen to voices such as Levy’s!!!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 14, 2025Science fiction sold as documentary. Levy hasn't set a foot in Israel or Gaza, and relies on his source with Hamas, a world recognized terror organization who launched the worst Jewish massacre since the holocaust on the jews
- Reviewed in the United States on March 10, 2025Gideon Levy is the original self-hating J3w. He literally has nothing useful to contribute to the discourse, past reflexive criticism of Israel stemming from his internalized antisemitism.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thank you.
So honest. Thank you. I admire your courage. I have travelled in the West Bank & Israel, & am deeply shocked by the distorted reports put out by much of the western media, including my country of Australia. Thank you again for your mighty efforts, & bless you.

5.0 out of 5 stars total demise of conscience in Israel
This is a contemporaneous and unbiased treatise of the barbarous cruelty Israel has inflicted upon Palestinians. It has to be mandatory for all who have any semblance of consciousness in their souls.

5.0 out of 5 stars Get to know how Israel is treating Palestinians
Gideon Levy is an Israeli correspondent with the Tel Aviv based Haaretz newspaper. I have seen him a number of times on Aljazeera on Inside Story and have admired the way he is prepared to openly criticise Israel when criticism is justified, particularly over Israel's treatment of the Palestinians.
This book is no exception, and leads us from 2014 to 2024 with copies of his regular column describing in clinical detail the many tragedies suffered by both individuals and families at the hands of the Israelis. Such treatment is nothing short of horrific.
I have now been following events in Gaza, Israel and the Occupied West Bank for quite some time, and am not, therefore, surprised by anything Levy is saying.
I have said it before, and will repeat it now: For a religion which, if Hitler had had his way, would have been wiped from the face of the earth the Israeli's treatment of the Palestinians is nothing short of repugnant.
I actually wonder about the competence of the IDF as they do not appear to have experienced real warfare. Further, there is the constant use of the word "war". Perhaps "Israeli blitz". or similar. would be more appropriate as it always seems to be very one-sided !
It is interesting that he maintains that the removal of Netanyahu and his ilk will not change the way Israel is behaving, as it appears to be fixated with having one and all as the enemy. It was also interesting to read that when he published a sympathetic column about Netanyahu, he got a lot of complaints. Somewhere within Israel there are people who realise how wrong their country is. Change, and there must be change, has to come from within, although such change would be greatly aided if the West (in particular the USA) stopped backing Israel.
Hopefully, the likes of the ICJ will help to bring about change.
Regardless, thank you Mr. Levy for a very informative, shocking and sad book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Compassionate and level headed
A collection of reports written with integrity and a deep understanding of what is unfolding alongside reminiscences from previous decades. The wretched situation described is presented with care, knowledge and compassion. A gritty, heartbreaking account which needs to be understood in vastly greater numbers inside and outside of Israel. Thank you to the author for his unflinching work through many years, may his words contribute to eventual peace in a region that has endured indescribable pain for too many generations
