No one is born a great leader. It takes time and experience and intentional work. A leader becomes great when they are put in hundreds of challenging situations and are forced to figure out the best course of action, not only for their team and the company as a whole but for the environments they influence. The world is hungry for more leaders who will do the right thing, model a positive response to conflict, and choose the path of fairness and accountability.

Grace Space is about acknowledging the "spaces within and spaces between us" to give honor and offer courteous goodwill as we commit to being fair and honest. I offer seven practices around Grace Space that provide the tools we need to get there. As leaders, it's about getting our hearts right so we can serve those we lead in ways that call out personal potential while also achieving high results.

Just shared about it on Instagram:This book is just so good... so needed.Heather shares stories and skills that enable a leader to bring people together in order to achieve unity and forward momentum -- as a team. That's what Grace Space is pouring into me today. Inspiration and wisdom to be THAT kind of leader in a polarized and divided world. Great for leaders and influencers across all fields and even at home... actually, especially at home. That's where it starts. Three thumbs up!

Dr. Heather Penny’s Grace Space: Creating Spaces We Want to Live and Lead In (2024) offers refreshingly simple yet profound ideas for how to approach life’s challenges in healthier ways.
“No one is born a great leader. It takes time and experience and hard work. These lessons can be expedited when we are mentored, but even then, a leader becomes great when they are put in hundreds of challenging situations and are forced to figure out the best course of action, not only for their team and the company as a whole, but for the environments they influence” (p. xix). In a world seeking noble, trustworthy leaders who have the ability to advance humankind while staying true to what is best about people at their core, those who choose to lead will—quite simply—need support, inspiration, and clarity of direction. Grace Space offers all three.
Taking her title from a key idea of Viktor Frankl’s work, Man’s Search for Meaning (reprinted in 2006), a memoir of his experiences as a Holocaust survivor, Dr. Penny encourages readers to emulate Frankl’s strength found through holding fast to a positive mindset. “The last of human freedoms is to choose one’s attitude, in any given set of circumstances.” This choice, called a Grace Space by Dr. Penny, gives leaders the power to choose our response where we can find our growth and our freedom.
Penny provides seven practices for fostering spaces of grace where the reader lives and leads:
    1. Responding vs. Reacting
    2. Questioning vs. Accusing
    3. Receptivity vs. Defensiveness
    4. Constructive Communication vs. Destructive Communication
    5. Connection vs. Protection
    6. Freedom vs. Control
    7. Trust vs. Fear
It is up to a noble leader, Penny suggests, to “get our hearts right as leaders—to serve those we lead in ways that call out personal potential while also achieving high results.” The seven practices listed above provide leaders the tools they need to do both.
While I enjoyed reading and considering much of what Dr. Penny offers in Grace Space, a few sections merit specific mention here:
    • “When tempted to react: (1) Stay curious. (2) Own your emotional state. (3) State what you want/need” (p. 16).
    • “If you aren’t sure if a person means to be sending subtext, ask them! A kind way to address this is to slow it down and check in with the person without making assumptions. Stay curious” (p. 50).
    • “Ask yourself, ‘Am I meeting [co-workers and direct reports] where they’re at? Or am I meeting them where I am or where I want them to be’?” (p. 56).
    • “In leadership, we often look at who is the smartest or who casts the greatest vision, but research is showing us that humans respond more to kindness than aptitude. This doesn’t mean we ignore competency, but it’s telling us that warmth with competency makes for great leadership. It underscores how, at our most base level, everyone craves connection” (p. 57).
    • During times of transition or change in an organization, “[r]emind everyone of the important role they play in the company. People know if they are valued and if they aren’t. Especially during seasons of change and growth, communicate the value each person brings to the team” (p. 80).
    • “When we can recognize the potential [of each person’s gifts that can benefit a team], we motivate people to want to serve the greater cause of the group because they know what they have to offer is valued” (p. 84).
    • “Trust-based leadership recognizes when a person or group is unfairly being excluded or marginalized and does something about it immediately” (p. 95).
Dr. Penny concludes Grace Space with the reminder that leaders have the power of influence, humans the power of choice. Her hope, as she describes it, is that “our roots go down deep into the soil of grace. In doing so, we will be creating spaces of grace wherever we go. And people will be drawn to this” (p. 103).

In Grace Space, Heather Penny, PhD, brilliantly underscores the invaluable currency of connection in today’s fragmented world. While numerous books touch upon leadership qualities, this work delves deep into the heart of relational leadership, proving that genuine connections form the bedrock of influential leadership and collective progress. The book elevates the notion of ‘grace spaces’ from a conceptual realm to practical, actionable steps. Readers are not only shown the transformative power of connecting and building bridges but are also handed the tools to create and join these spaces, allowing the cultivation of enriched environments wherever they go. Grace Space is a clarion call for leaders and individuals alike to embrace connection over protection and collaboration over isolation, championing a message of unity, optimism, and collective heroism.

This little book is packed with so many nuggets of goodness! It’s written for organizational leaders but is applicable to all roles and areas of life. It would be perfect to use as a book for group study and discussion as a way to get people thinking about how they communicate and relate to others and how any type of relationship can be improved. Lots of good questions for self-reflection and clear examples of what each of the topics - things like trust, receptivity, connection - look like in real life. Loved it!

Servant leadership is a popular and important ideal, but Grace Space masterfully applies it to the sticky settings leaders face. The practical and thoughtful prompts at the end of each chapter showcase Dr. Penny's coaching skill. As a creative leader, Grace Space challenged me to see more than a better way to lead. It gave me tools to get here.
