Licensed Professional Counselor William Brown walks through the process step by step with real plans to be able to move forward with dignity, self-respect, and hope! Every person's situation is unique, but lessons learned from others are so important in what feels like a very isolating and unique situation. Coming True also included are letters written by other men who have walked this path, filled with wisdom, honesty and promise about this process.
Family, friends, and professionals supporting someone coming out later in life also benefit from this information. Often times, support people are unsure about how to have conversations about what their loved on is facing. Learning about the process can better inform how to be most supportive and helpful.
William Brown, LPC, leads a therapy group called "Out Late" for men coming out later in life, which began over ten years ago. He came out at the age of forty after being married for eighteen years and having two children. He subsequently worked with dozens of men, couples, and families in this situation over the years, and this book distills the themes and approaches that are most common as a man faces coming out well into adulthood.

About the author

William Brown hails from the town of Hays, Kansas, where he was raised with his three older sisters. He graduated from a private Catholic high school before attending Northwestern University as a theater major. He married shortly after graduation and began working as a professional actor in Chicago. Following the birth of his daughter, the family moved to Bloomington, Indiana, for his wife to pursue an MBA. Her career first took them to Fort Wayne, Indiana, where their son was born. William became primarily a stay-at-home dad and part-time actor. His wife’s corporate career took them to Tennessee, Florida, Connecticut, Virginia, and finally to Atlanta, Georgia.
After coming out and the subsequent divorce, William attended Georgia State University for his Master’s Degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. His coursework included a practicum and internship at Ridgeview Institute, a mental health hospital treating addiction and psychological issues. After graduating, he worked at The Equality Counseling Center with supervision from Becky Beaton, Ph.D., LPC. He started his private practice, William Brown Counseling Services, in 2015, and his focus includes working with the LGBTQ+ community on a cross-section of mental health issues. He established a therapy group called Out Late for those coming out later in life in 2012, and he works extensively with individuals and couples facing the reality of a spouse coming out as gay or bisexual. He partnered with several colleagues to establish The LGBTQ Therapist Resource, an association of affirming mental health providers that seeks to improve access to safe, competent therapists for LGBTQ+ identified individuals in Georgia.
Today, William lives with his partner, Matt, and their two sweet dogs, Annie and Iggy. They have four adult children between them, and they enjoy hopping on a plane to get away whenever they can—at least now that we can hop on planes again!

- Reviewed in the United States on May 24, 2024I had hit rock bottom when a therapist recommended this book to me. I literally cried my way through it. I kept wondering how the author knew me. As others have noted, the book provides a roadmap for a very, very difficult journey. But for me it also told me I was not the only person to face this. Rational people faced with similar circumstances had made the same choices in life that I had made. I felt incredibly guilty about those I had hurt. This book helped me release that guilt and be able to move forward to live authentically. I read lots of books and articles as I transitioned from one life to another. No other reference came close to helping me understand why I was in the place I was in or how to navigate the journey toward authenticity. If you find yourself on that journey, you owe it to yourself to read this book. And know that while the firepit you must cross to get there is indeed hot, life on the other side is so much better than you ever allowed yourself to dream.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 30, 2022Coming to terms with one’s sexuality later in life, becoming “true” to yourself and finding authenticity is an extremely difficult process. Having lived a long “straight” life - often with trappings of a straight marriage and kids - makes coming out uniquely complex and challenging. This book provides an invaluable guide to what that process looks and feels like, as well as offering wise and circumspect advice on navigating that journey. The author is a therapist who has a long career specializing in dealing with this situation, even leading support groups for those in need. His wisdom, expertise and insight gained from those years of work is clearly expressed and shared in this book in a clear, well written and logical manner. The book captures many of the emotions of this journey and touches on all the variations of themes people in this situation must over come. For those struggling and in need, as well as for those who want to help them, this book is a gift. It is a resource and guide that should not be missed.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 20, 2022The nine short sentences that Author William Brown sets forth on the Dedication page of his book “Coming True” outline the steps of self-reflection and action that each man must journey through (the same as I did) to understand, acknowledge, and accept himself in the coming out process. This book is a roadmap for any man Coming True, and is a gold mine of lived experiences, valuable information, and relevant and useful resources!! A 10 out of 10, I recommend it highly!!
