"I will tell you how I grew up and how I was trained, about the great sages with whom I lived and what they taught me, not through lectures and books but through experiences."- Swami Rama

Reading it, you will discover the human side to this yogic master. He is a young boy, full of mischief. He is a teenager, full of curiosity and adventurous zeal. He is a seeker, with certain strengths and weaknesses. Just like us, he sometimes fails to distinguish the fake gurus from genuine masters, mistaking magic for spiritual achievement.

Living with the Himalayan Masters is one of those rare books that contains the seeds of transformation within its pages―sowing those seeds in the heart of the reader, and creating the potential for true spiritual upliftment. These stories record Swami Rama’s personal quest for truth and enlightenment―inspiring, illuminating, entertaining, mystifying, and often droll and humorous.

This life-changing book will bring you face-to-face with some great twentieth-century masters, including Mataji of Assam, a ninety-six-year-old sage who never slept; Gudari Baba, who taught Swami Rama the value of direct experience; Yogi Sri Aurobindo, who integrated meditation with action; Uria Baba, who demonstrated that every human being has the potential for healing; and Mahatma Gandhi.

Read the humbling story of the man who founded the Himalayan Institute, and the great teachers who molded him into a Himalayan Master.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Buy this book for yourself. Each page is filled with joy and cheer. What I like best us that Swami Rama's message does not require us to transform ourselves, it teaches that we are already perfect." -- Judith Benn Hurley, author of The Good Herb, Savoring the Day, and Healing Secrets of the Seasons

"One of the great spiritual classics of all time. An insider's view of hidden adepts who live outside time and space as we know it, yogis and yogis who can't possibly exist- but do!" --
Linda Johnsen, author of The Living Goddess: Reclaiming the Tradition of the Mother of the Universe

About the Author

Sri Swami Rama, the founder of the Himalayan International Institute of Yoga Science and Philosophy, was raised in the Himalayan cave monasteries and ordained a monk in early childhood. He studied Western psychology, philosophy, and medicine in Europe and taught in Japan before coming to the United States in 1969. Here he founded the Himalayan Institute to create a bridge between the ancient teachings of the East and the modern scientific approaches of the West.

I may not ever have the opportunity to learn from the masters duirextlu, I may never visit the Himalayas or be with these teachers... But I am very pleased to experience the key teachings, key lessons, through this accomplished man's life experience. I have less regret now.

I almost didn't get this book, but I am 100% glad I did. Every page has a lesson, an experience that enlightened in itself. It is so good, I cannot put it down, and I don't want it to end. It is so relevant I plan to use it as a daily reading for children when they become of age. I am grateful. Thank you.

Written in a simple first person narrative, it really is a collection of remembrances but illustrates a practical way to incorporate Yogic principles in everyday life. I liked that he was unsparing in recalling his own callow and egostic youth. Mind you after looking at the reviews on his biography, I read an article by Katherine Webster online and it sounds as if Swami Rama still had ego problems in his adult days!
But this book is still good and I enjoyed it better after reading the said article as it sounds as if he did all the things he dismissed the other 'fake' swamis of doing. I rather got the feeling he might have kept on the Spiritual path had he stayed in India- indeed he warns that one has to be quite strong-willed and focussed to not get seduced by fame and fortune.

Overall the book is a great read it you want to experience about mysticism and get exposed to unknown side of Indian theological and religious account first hand. It's an excellent read narrating a boy's transcendence from normal life to a revered and visionary yogi and guru, including life stories of some other great souls who blessed Indian people during their visitation as humans.
Condition of the book ordered was ss expected, although was more used than I imagined. Had someone's name written on the front page. And pages were turned yellow due to age, but what matters is the content.

Hi, Johan here, with a short review of the book "Living With The Himalayan Masters".

Although I haven't finished the book yet, I can definitely recommend it to anyone interested in spiritual
matters. The book shows us what is possible if we attain that state of oneness with God. It is
possible for anyone to become like that ! Through meditation and prayer ! And by thinking unlimited thoughts !

The book is written in a clear style, easy readable and also humorous. It has a considerable number of pages,
which I like because you wish the book would never end. It has also some beautiful pictures in it which complement
the beautiful scenes of the Himalaya and the temples etc. described in the book.

If you like this book - and I do ! - you will surely also like the books "Life and teachings of the masters of the far east" by Baird Spalding and "Adventures of a western mystic" by Peter mt. Shasta. I think they are available via Amazon also.

Greetings,
Johan

There is something goin' on over there in India way beyond anything happening in the West. After China India is the oldest extant culture in the world today. Perhaps it takes that much time to evolve that level of consciousness. This book is a superlative examination of the extraordinary feats some yogis can achieve. Swami Rama died in the 1980's and he was classically educated so his perceptions are more modern than some of the other "adepts" that write on the subjects in this book.

This book is credable, thought provoking and if nothing else entertaining. Read it.

A beloved book. I had met Swami Rama when I was in high school, and heard him speak, when he was in Chicago. It was amazing finding this book now that I am 61! I read it all and really enjoyed the stories about his life and all the unusual Swamis he had known in his life. Will keep this book forever to refer back to sometimes. Imagine meditating in a cave for 11 months, with little to eat or drink, and only a pinhole of light! That was one story from his training with his teacher. Amazing!

I have read this book many times and each read, it's as thought I am hearing his message again for the first time. The book is filled with insights and lessons into the human condition as experienced by this true Himalayan Master. It's realistic, believable and more importantly, these experiences are achievable for any true seeker who chooses to know the mind. I have met many deciples of Swami Rama and he was everything this books states and more. At a time when there are few true Masters, the wisdom presented here is timeless and more relevant today that ever before. A true classic!
