The Bhagavad Gita is India's most sacred text - the 'Hindu' Bible. Yogananda's translation and commentary brings a unique and deeply penetrating insight into this great scripture, which is widely regarded as one of the most comprehensive books available on the science and philosophy of Yoga. God Talks With Arjuna explains the Bhagavad Gita's profoundest spiritual, psychological, and metaphysical truths, long obscured by metaphor and allegory. Yogananda takes Lord Krishna's counsel to the warrior Arjuna and applies it to our everyday struggles with the human ego. Our greatest battle he explains, like Arjuna's, takes place within our own minds as we fight our doubts, fears, negative habits, self-defeating thoughts, and erroneous thinking. Appealing to scholar and general reader alike, there is no other Gita on the market as attractive, and comprehensive. Yogananda said, 'From the moment of conception to the surrender of the last breath, man has to fight in each incarnation innumerable battles: biological, hereditary, bacteriological, physiological, climatic, social, ethical, political, sociological, psychological, metaphysical - so many varieties of inner and outer conflicts. Competing for victory in every encounter are the forces of good and evil. The whole intent of the Gita is to align man's efforts on the side of dharma, or righteousness. The ultimate aim is Self-realization, the realization of man's true Self, the soul, as made in the image of God, one with the ever-existing, ever-conscious, ever-new bliss of Spirit.'

About the Author

Born in India on January 5, 1893, Paramahansa Yogananda devoted his life to helping people of all races and creeds to realize and express more fully in their lives the true beauty, nobility, and divinity of the human spirit. After graduating from Calcutta University in 1915, Yogananda took formal vows as a monk of India's venerable monastic Swami Order. Two years later, he began his life's work with the founding of a how-to-live school since grown to twenty-one educational institutions throughout India where traditional academic subjects were offered together with yoga training and instruction in spiritual ideals. In 1920, he was invited to serve as India's delegate to an International Congress of Religious Liberals in Boston. His address to the Congress and subsequent lectures on the East Coast were enthusiastically received, and in 1924 he embarked on a cross-continental speaking tour. Over the next three decades, Paramahansa Yogananda contributed in far-reaching ways to a greater awareness and appreciation in the West of the spiritual wisdom of the East. In Los Angeles, he established an international headquarters for Self-Realization Fellowship, the nonsectarian religious society he had founded in 1920. Through his writings, extensive lecture tours, and the creation of Self-Realization Fellowship temples and meditation centers, he introduced hundreds of thousands of truth-seekers to the ancient science and philosophy of Yoga and its universally applicable methods of meditation. Today, the spiritual and humanitarian work begun by Paramahansa Yogananda continues under the direction of Sri Mrinalini Mata, one of his closest disciples and president of Self-Realization Fellowship/Yogoda Satsanga Society of India since 2011. In addition to publishing his writings, lectures and informal talks (including a comprehensive series of Self-Realization Fellowship Lessons for home study), the society also oversees temples, retreats, and centers around the world.

I've pretty-much concluded most are very-much the same. Must be true: There is only one God, maybe broken up into many metaphors though. Only local environments/histories/personalities make a difference. In the West, Christian-Judeo and Capitalism merge as lessons and personalities affect each - only what money is and does calls for some mammoth mutations - yes?

(I just flipped 'Judeo-Christian' to a reverse its order. Does it make a
difference?)(Mai Pen Rye - Thai lingo for never mind, it doesn't matter.)

After studying many texts I believe this rendition of The Bhagavad Gita is probably the most succinct, accessible and reasonable way of expressing what religions should offer our realities on Earth; our natures, appetites, wants and needs. Personalities and historical references aside, this fine, touching, readable tome (in a set of two volumes) bring together East and West belief systems. Like the Tao, it's practical and applicable to our 21st-Centiury lives. As a spiritual message it comes across simply as reasonable, humane... And uplifting.

Think of it this way: Different religions are just different messengers.

This rendition of The Bhagavada Gita particularly doesn't demand pulpits or promises (including threatening
promises); it has the tone of 'it would be better if' - a Tao/Buddhist attitude - it's kindly persuasion.

    Which is stronger, knowledge or belief? Should they be in competition? They can/do merge, so accept/use both;
they need not contradict. Why should they; they are aspects of the same; just from different perspectives.
More to the point, different uses. (Was it Plato with the blind men feeling an elephant's different parts,
each describing it as a different creature? A cool lesson; thanks, Aristocles)

Being on one planet, being one race regardless of customs or colors or factions, with technology as it now is we should unify not bicker and fight and claim 'our God's better than your god', which all people should outgrow.
    U.S. Congress: Take Note.

An unfortunate aspect of our time is competition
versus cooperation. Such only separates people.

This book can bring you closer to understanding that
different people/beliefs are actually more the same
    than different.

I submit thanks to Paramahansa Yogananda for his dramatic clarity,
from me, a Christian, agnostic, Theravada Buddhist, Zen, Tao fan.

Here is a surprising product link to another book I see as ('somewhat' to not affront some) akin:
Stranger in a Strange Land (I may get some flack for this recco; it's science fiction,
written a half-century ago). For some, a radical comparison; for others an ironic romp and satire. For me,
true and enjoyably assimilable parable. Like, for instance, some of the Beatles lyrics.

First, this is one of the most important books i’LL ever read. Yes!!!!! It is so beautiful. I had to send the first one I ordered back because it came packaged wrong and got beat up in the mail. It was a gift to a friend. The second one came in bubble wrap and still had beat up corners. I ended up keeping that one. I ordered another book by this author on Amazon, and it came in a box in perfect condition. It’s also 2 books in a box (The Second Coming of Christ). This book needs to be shipped in a box. Not in envelopes of any sort. I guess they came from different sellers.

If your tired of all the 'flowery' metaphors that go with 'new age' spirituality that doesn't have the hard core scientific ways, methods and explanations on how to get to that better place, and or become a better person then this is it! Even if you are seeking to understand the nature of self and this reality along with so much more then this book is for you! For those not in the know this was written by the great Paramahansa Yogananda, the same yogi who wrote Autobiography of a Yogi. Forget scholars this man was in direct contact with God/universe/creation. This book is truth incarnate. A serious read for any true seeker of wisdom, but then all of his publications would be worth having in anyone's collection. Rest assured this is not fluff! Love Light and Laughter!

This book is for the ages and will help enlighten the path for all sincere seekers longing to know the One God hiding behind all forms and names. I have come to realize how my understanding of God and Creation is significantly evolving with reading every verse and commentary. The author Paramahansaji has spoken with surety about God from his own direct experience and at such a personal level. Words seem to have been pulled right out of ether. While the world is filled with many loud voices boasting with pride, material wealth and societal status, these silent streams of truth, which truly uphold the inner sacred meanings behind for the benefit and true happiness of all mankind, will always continue to attract truth seekers.

Reading other comments presented here, it may be worthwhile to point out that these works of scriptural interpretation may need to be systematically studied, assimilated and ingested. From personal experience I feel reading cover to cover to finish may not help much, but reading and re-reading different verses at different times of the day and different times of our lives, could help us see the deeper significance behind these teachings. When the goal of life is clear, these tools can greatly help one progress on the inner journey toward God realization and eternal peace.

I sincerely pray for more and more people of all lands and races to connect to God at a deeper spiritual level through these and other wonderful works, so we may all come to realize our true Divine potential and kinship.

This book came to me at such a perfect time and truly shined the light of truth through my dark clouds of hopelessness. I really mean it when I say that I believe Yoganandas books should be classroom textbooks. This book touches on EVERY aspect of EVERYTHING!! I couldn't believe it as I kept reading the 1000+ page book; I couldn't wait to pick it up and learn more about the world, spirit, meditation, humanity, etc. It blows my mind to smithereens to think that such an ancient text applies to our modern society; not to mention that yogananda wrote this 50+ years ago!! Much thanks to Self-Realization Fellowship and of course to Yogananda, the beautifully transcendent man.
p.s. I do think that Autobiography of a Yogi should be read first, followed by this book, and then The Second Coming of Christ..

It is a treasure of wisdom that helps us to understand the real value and meaning of our life. This book actually comes in two volumes with a slipcase, it looks very nice and overall the book is well worth the money.
