Innovating Innovation: Leadership Tools to Make Revolutionary Change Happen for You and Your Business (For Readers of Trillion Dollar Coach or Innovation Lab Excellence) Hardcover – March 31, 2019
Purchase options and add-ons
#1 New Release in Industrial Management & Leadership ─ Breakthrough Innovation Tools for Successful Leadership
Innovation needs innovation: Innovation is broken. Business leadership is struggling to find ways to crack through corporate politics or bureaucratic silos, to move from defense to offense, to nurture real breakthrough, to drive visionary creativity in ways that add new value to everything they do. In Innovating Innovation, David Morey, one of America’s leading strategic consultants, teaches, coaches, and guides you across eleven concrete and pragmatic steps that unlock and drive day-to-day innovation in your business and help you gain a long-term competitive advantage.
Make change and innovation happen: Innovating Innovation synergizes what is best in classic innovation theories with an insurgent strategic model inspired by one of Morey’s first corporate clients, Apple founder Steve Jobs. It shows how to lead innovation that creates the products of visionary genius without the necessity for actual genius. It provides practical tools and guidance on building and leading the teams, working conditions, organizational structures, and cultures of market-made and market-making innovation. It illustrates a roadmap to the disruptive periphery, the organizational margins at which real innovation actually takes place.
Innovation can be taught: Innovating Innovation is a framework to counter failure. It directs you, the reader, to the consumer, the very person who will actually tell you how to innovate the benefits to create a future you can own. This book invites you to “think different,” to become a change leader, to go the “wrong” way to get to the right places.
After reading this new battlefield manual for innovation, you will:
- Learn the Disruptive Periphery Concept and how it can give you the tools to help your business
- Discover a practical marketing-centric focus applied to innovation
- Reap the benefits of lessons developed from thirty years of real-world global consulting and training experience

DMG Global teaches leaders, companies, and campaigns how to win by teaching them how to think, plan, and act like an insurgent, not an incumbent — to be a true change leader.
Today’s business and political environment is the toughest in history for incumbents — change is a threat to every incumbent. That’s why the insurgent has the edge in the Information Age.
In this hyper-competitive and volatile environment, winning means building more strategic and sustainable consumer or voter relationships than ever before. Rarely today does a corporation or candidate get a second chance.
INSURGENT BEST PRACTICES:
DMG Global has established a variety of proprietary and disciplined best practice learning systems. These involve corporate CEOs, board of directors, senior executives, management leaders, and individuals in charge of day-to-day execution.
Insurgent learning and training sessions range from two hours to two days. Topic examples include:
BECOME AN INSURGENT:
Re-focus and re-energize your strategy, organization, and culture to increase profitability and success.
FOCUS ON CUSTOMERS:
De-brief cutting-edge methods to learn more effectively and efficiently from consumers to create an increasingly robust and profitable marketing dialogue.
RESEARCH LIKE AN INSURGENT:
Special attention is given to cutting-edge data analytic and research techniques and to tracking and predicting early adopter, soft support and hard support perceptions, behaviors and opportunities.

Like a good friend, he speaks in a language always easy to understand because he uses both specific anecdotes and examples as well as showing the general principles that he sees as central to stimulating innovation in the current business climate. His examples are reminder that a good knowledge of American business history can be invaluable for warning those in business what NOT to do as well as how opportunities may be successfully exploited. Too often these are forgotten and whether it is the Edsel or the initial roll-out of the "New Coke" among may others , it is important that we remember them accurately to increase our chances of avoiding disaster. Of course, we need to think about successes, too- and they are here, whether's its Birdseye's frosted food or Dyson's vacuums. Morey's writing allows the reader to see both the Big Picture and the fine-grained specifics so that it is essential reading for anyone trying navigate the evermore uncertain economic waters ahead of us. It builds on themes from those earlier books, but offers new and powerful insights that no one in business or manufacturing has afford to miss.
"I'd like to die on Mars ... just not on impact" -- Elon Musk
Just that sentence incorporates many insights ... and teaches important things about goals.
I learned from the copious footnotes, too ... quite valuable and (as a bonus!) entertaining.
I would never have thought that a book on innovating and business would be fun to read, as well as worthwhile.
My only nitpick: I'd have preferred a more comprehensive index.
Read ... and innovate!
The weaving of innovating business ideas, sound business principles and the historic discussions, luminaries' strategies and why they worked all combine for an intriguing and profoundly valuable book.
