Uncovering Treasures That Matter: A Therapist’s Guide to Asking the Right Questions Paperback – March 2, 2023
Purchase options and add-ons
Uncovering Treasures That Matter (TTM) is a theme-based writing method to help your clients grow. A therapist can use this evidence-based protocol to help clients discover insights and new meanings in their self-discovery process.
The TTM method blends the power of expressive writing, journaling, and life theme writing. It is direct and effective. Why? Stories are what people remember. Just as children are given fables, fairy tales, and parables because these types of stories convey crucial life guidance in the form of easy-to-remember stories, so can stories written and shared with a therapist help clients find clarity and meaning. Stories have been human beings' most reliable means of retaining and sharing information since our early origins.
You hold in your hands a turnkey workbook. We've provided everything you need, from how to use the TTM method with individual clients, couples, group sessions, and one-day workshops. There are 50 themes with sensitizing questions and prompts to help clients explore their issues through writing. Copy the pages you want your client to have and let them explore the questions. Here are their instructions.
"Ask yourself each question offered. Consider responding to a question(s) that makes you smile, that you are attracted to answering, and to one or two you don't like or want to turn away from. Facing what you don't like, or are uncomfortable with, is often a path to the most significant learning. These questions are guides to prime or stimulate your memories and thoughts about your life. The questions are not intended to be answered in a literal manner. Read through each of them and react to the one(s) that open windows for you. Each life is unique, and the priming questions impact each of us differently."

- Reviewed in the United States on July 7, 2023In my therapy practice I am always on the lookout for systems that will help clients do more and better self-discovery. Writing is a natural candidate, because when you write, you sit in a sort of introspective stance, pen in hand waiting for the words your mind dishes up.
In promoting such self-understanding, asking the right questions can make the difference between staring at the blank page and pouring one’s innermost issues out in a revealing flow.
This book, based on the foundational work of Jim Birren and Cheryl Svensson from the University of Southern California’s gerontology department, adds to the growing body of applied research, attempting to establish a connection between writing and clinician facilitated mental health.
Uncovering Treasures that Matter builds upon the Guided Autobiography (GAB) system of “sensitizing questions” and theme based writing, inviting clients to dig deep into aspects of their emotional lives that might uncover “treasures” for self-understanding.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 5, 2023Bonnie Bernell and Cheryl Svensson know that at the heart of every human being is a story. Sometimes these stories are well-known, but sometimes they remain hidden in our inner recesses. While this book will be of particular interest to therapists and their clients, it is valuable for anyone who wants to uncover their own stories through journaling and for those who choose to enable others to share their stories at the end of life or along the way. "Uncovering Treasures That Matter" is itself a treasure that will matter to many people. Thanks to the authors for their creative, important work.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 28, 2023I have several other books about Guided Autobiography (GAB), and so this addition to my collection strengthens my understanding of how the GAB process is useful to counselors and therapists. I am not a therapist, but I really enjoyed reading and will be able to use many of the questions that Drs. Bernell and Svensson have offered. It is also helpful and useful to see and study the many new topics and themes in the book. My thanks to both authors for this new addition to our technology!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 15, 2023I received a copy of this book as a gift. I have had the good fortune to participate in Guided Autobiography workshops with Bonnie Bernell and have found them to be extremely helpful in my own development. Bonnie Bernell and Cheryl Svensson have taken their experience with Guided Autobiography, and provided such a wealth of information about the Treasures That Matter method in a clear, thorough, accessible, and inspiring way. The depth and breadth of what is provided in the book is incredibly impressive. I love the method of providing numerous questions about a particular topic (such as Your Inner Selves, or Waking Up To...Letting Go Of), letting the participant reflect on those questions that make them smile, that they are attracted to answering, or that open windows for themselves, as well as one or two they don't like, followed by an opportunity to write only on those questions that the participant chooses. As a physician and someone who has benefitted greatly from this method, I highly recommend the book to anyone who wants to incorporate this method into individual counseling, couples counseling, or a group or workshop format.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 26, 2023Uncovering Treasures That Matter is a fantastic book that helped me as a client gain new insights and meanings in my self-discovery process. The book is a turnkey workbook that includes 50 themes with sensitizing questions and prompts designed to help clients explore their issues through writing.
What I appreciated most about the TTM method is that it blends expressive writing, journaling, and life theme writing. The approach is direct and effective, and the stories written and shared with the therapist helped me find clarity and meaning in my life.
The instructions were easy to understand and follow. I was encouraged to ask myself each question offered and consider responding to the ones that made me smile, those that I was attracted to answering, and one or two that I didn't like or wanted to turn away from. Facing what I didn't like or was uncomfortable with was often a path to the most significant learning.
The questions were guides to prime or stimulate my memories and thoughts about my life, and they were not intended to be answered in a literal manner. Instead, I read through each of them and reacted to the ones that opened windows for me. The author understands that each life is unique, and the priming questions impact each of us differently.
Overall, I found Uncovering Treasures That Matter to be an essential resource for anyone looking to gain new insights and meanings in their self-discovery process. If you're a client looking for a powerful tool to help you, this book is a must-read.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 4, 2023Storytelling has been part of human history from its beginning. But story-writing takes stories to a new level of understanding and emotion. Drs. Bernell and Svensson have created a volume that cues the story-writer to go deep and broad in their exploration of 51 different life themes. While the book is perfect for psychotherapists who wants to use a new modality with their patients it’s also ideal for the curious non-therapist who wants to enrich their writing and self-exploration, taking it to a new depth. I highly recommend “Uncovering Treasures That Matter,” a gem of a book and a novel approach to understanding and supporting oneself and others.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a beautiful book
As a therapist I adore this book. The sentiment behind it is just lovely, but more than that it’s endlessly practical. Using these prompts, a few of my clients have been able to tell their stories in ways they never would before. Narratives and lives have been changed and I’m sure many more will follow! If you’re not sure…buy the book! There are so many wonderful nuggets and treasures to uncover; and you won’t be sorry you went exploring! Just lovely.
