C. Gockel has been writing stories for her friends and family since the dark ages (i.e., before word processors existed.) A few years ago, she started posting those stories to the intertubes. She received emails, messages, and reviews from her fans telling her she should 'do this professionally.' She didn't; she is a coward and life as a digital designer, copywriter and coder is more dependable. But in the end, her husband's nagging wore her down: "You could be the next '50 Shades of Gray' and I could retire!" Unfortunately, the author writes science fiction and fantasy, and isn't particularly good at writing erotica. She is sad about this; she'd love for her husband to be able to retire and just work for her so she could nag him.

At the moment, Ms. Gockel is working on the next installment of the Archangel Project.

LaSayle M got it right in their review: This fantastic series the Archangel Project is would have been bleak without Hsissh and 6T9 to lighten up the serious setting. The sex'bot gaining sentience in the end of the Heretic was a reward for readers hooting and rooting for the simple loving hunk of bolts. It made for great contrast to James' character contemplating his own programming. Reading "Carl Sagan's Hunt for Intelligent Life in the Universe" after the Archangel Down and then reading the Archangel Down again made the whole story anew and managed to add even more positive expectation for the next books. Keeping the pet's sentience hidden in the main storyline for the first three books was brilliant, it felt like a true secret between the author and the readers and gave me a smug sense of satisfaction every time the humanoids addressed the werfle's actions as just animal instinct! Oh, the eye rolls behind those hisses! And the power of human obliviousness when Carl appeared in Noa's dreams… Even James with his knowledge of his own otherness did not clue in on the possibility. Hilarious!

This second strory line gets underway pretty rapidly. Carl Sagan convinces 6T9 effectively of his sentience, but has problems doing the same concerning Sixty's own suitability to the mission. But the adventure keeps bucking and rolling the pair and later the trio in such a way that no-one could argue them anything but just right for the cause. That of course is how Cynthia creates it, but to me it feels like more than fiction.

C. Gockel states her skills on writing erotica lacking, but that is not my finding. There's nothing wrong with her building long burning overwhelming passion with as complex characters as she portrays. Once they do get involved, it's is real enough, and not every thrust and moan needs to be described to convey the passion. The scifi/erotica ratio is well-balanced and the style consistent with the whole. The relationships are fascinating, layered, thought inspiring and emotionally true to life, or programming as it may. The conundrums the non-biologicals experience with their coding and how they circumvent or interpret their primary directives is still in line with their programming but excersizes something resembling free will. Volka, the she-weere, though biolocigal is still programmed in her own way, imprinted on a male of her past who's all but impossible to have for herself in the future. 6T9 finds himself yearning to be the recipient of such intensity from Volka and I really anticipate the next part in the series so we can continue observing how their relationship evolves.

And the reason for the mission Hsissh recruited 6T9? Something has scared a sentient, ancient spaceship buried in ice. Is freeing it enough or is it just a start for figuring it out? Read for yourself and you'll find yourself telling Cynthia Gockel: Hurry, please!

Starship Awaking is a unique novel. You pick it an you might think that you are going to read just another sci-fi kind of flick! Be prepared for a very deep and intriguing novel. I am on my second read through. The novel takes a look at emotion and reason, which rules which, which causes hatred and bigotry to foster within the human soul. C Gockel is a talented and gifted author. When you put talent on a topic such as human mentality and emotion you know you are in for an outstanding read. I hope you take the time to really learn from this novel – it is a fun read so don’t worry about that but learn a little along the way.

The worldbuilding is great, 6T9 is amusing and quirky, and then people are people, and things get grim. The body count is sad *see people being people* , but Carl and Sixty are consistent bright spots in the narrative. Volka and the weeres are fascinating characters. I'm looking forward to more adventures.

I was a bit unsure about a book where one of the main characters was a sex bot named 6T9. There are a lot of ways that the story could have gone astray and been nothing more than "the robot sex adventures of 6T9"; however, the author avoided that. It was more of a running joke than a focus of the story. The two main PoV characters - Volka and 6T9 - both grow as characters, though they have more room to grow in the sequels. I hadn't realized beforehand this was the 4th book in a series, but it stood well on its own. The primary storyline was self-contained with some loose ends for connecting with the next book in the series. Overall, I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more of the series.

I had a hard time to put this down once I was reading. It kept me involved and anxious for what was next. The only part I had issues with is parts were in to much detail. Still I’m looking forward to reading more of this adventure. Thank You

Read this one first as it was part of a bundle that I had bought, and that just had to get hold of the rest of the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars A werfle and a sex’bot walk into a bar…

I made that up, but it seems as if that would be a great introduction to a really funny story.

In a posted review of Heretic, I noted that it was the ending of a three book series. Starship Waking is #4, and Darkness Rising (already pre-ordered) makes five, so it appears readers and fans have lucked out big time.

If you do want to take in C. Gockel’s fun and original series, start with Archangel Down, followed by Noa’s Ark and Heretic. Then check out Carl Hagan’s Hunt for Intelligent Life in the Universe (free short story, and an explanation of the “werfle” mention in this review title).

6T9, the sex’bot, (and now sentient being,) the werfle noted above, and a weere (Volka, a human/wolf hybrid) end up in a race to free a sentient spacecraft that is about to be uncovered (mining process) by a culture that has vowed to destroy any technology that involves artificial intelligence.

Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Heart-warming science fiction

Having just finished the book I'm left with a warm and fuzzy feeling of gratefulness - which isn't what you'd expect from "hard" science fiction. The author is a master of developing personalities with complexity and a huge range of emotions in a plausible world setting, which makes her books immensely readworthy.
This story takes place more than a hundred years after the Archangel Down trilogy, but most of its proponents are still alive and well. This time it's 6T9's task to save someone (something?) and he goes about it with all the brain power he acquired, plus a helpful pet. But read for yourselves ... ;-)

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Stunning

This is one of the best adventure reads I have found in recent times. Incredibly interesting and intelligent characters are woven into a compelling story. This is the first time that I have read a book that is number 4 in a series and found that it is complete and able to be enjoyed all on its own. And now I am planning to obtain all the others in the series and devour them all. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has a love of Sci-Fi and adventure novels

4.0 out of 5 stars Continues to amuse

I am enjoying this series. It has what any cat lover would want. A character that is part of a great power known as 'The One' residing in the body of a 10 legged creature that behaves like a domestic cat. Better still this character refers to the humans as its pets. Someone clearly knows the domestic cat very well.

The spaceship is interesting. It is a powerful vessel that can traverse the galaxy in an instant. But it is afraid. Very afraid. Lots of good stuff here. But no one knows exactly what the ship is afraid of because it communicates through emotions. Then there is 6T9, a sex robot that has no owner. ^T( is an expert in human emotions but is unable to sense the ship.

There is lots of good stuff here. The stories are set in an original way and hold the reader's attention. This is a good read but it is not outstanding, hence the 4 star rating. Don't let that put you off. Dive in and enjoy.
