The Malachi Covenant Audible Audiobook – Unabridged

4.6 out of 5 stars 92 ratings

The relics of St. Nicholas are among the most divine and prized possessions in the Christian world, said to hold the power to heal the most incurable diseases and protect those who come in contact with them. Biblical archeologist Maggie Shepherd has the opportunity of a lifetime, a chance to extract and study one of these priceless artifacts buried in the tomb of the man who is now known as Santa Claus. In just a few weeks, on Christmas Eve, the Pope will present the venerated relic of St. Nicholas to the head of the Eastern Orthodox Church in Moscow in the hope of reuniting East and West after a 1,000-year schism.

Driven by rumors of the relic’s legendary power, many people want to control it, including a Russian mob boss who coerces Malachi Popov into stealing it for him before the ceremony. A devout man, Popov wants nothing to do with the evil scheme but his desperate need for money to support his ailing mother leaves him no choice. Once in possession of the miraculous relic, Popov witnesses its awesome power and regrets his action, but before he can set things right, it vanishes.

Not knowing who to trust, both Popov and Maggie set off on a globe-spanning chase to recover the treasured artifact before the world learns it’s missing, and all hope of reuniting the Church is lost. What they don’t know is there are others on their trail who will stop at nothing to keep them from their prize, including murder.

I’m not big on writing reviews, but I couldn’t let this one pass by. What a gem! Wonderful story chalked full of intrigue and suspense, wonderfully-drawn characters, exotic locales, and rich history. Like most books of this genre, the comparisons to The DaVinci Code are inevitable, but The Malachi Covenant more than stands on its own. The dialogue is more realistic, the characters are more likable, and the story is more plausible. Kelly has outdone himself. If it’s not too much to ask, a sequel would be grand!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading The Malachi Covenant - it is my favorite book of 2024. The author manages to include not only grand, action-packed characters and stories throughout the novel (like a Russian mob boss and murder) but also very normal and personal moments (like when we are first introduced to the character of Maggie, who ponders whether it is time to give Botox a try as she reflects on how her appearance has changed since her childhood days in Vermont). The Malachi Covenant provides both thrilling adventure and thought-provoking prose. I'm looking forward to Dee Kelly, Jr.'s next book.

The Malachi Covenant is a must read! Not only does Kelly deliver on fast paced, international intrigue from a new lens, historical facts, sense of place - in interesting places - and sympathetic characters, he delivers an overarching message of hopefulness the world could use. Here’s hoping the book gets made into movie!

I highly recommend "The Malachi Covenant" if you like good mysteries. I loved the setting in Italy and Russia. Having been to both countries, I could picture where they were in each scene. And even if you haven't traveled there, the descriptions will immerse you in the settings.

When I picked up the book, I was thinking that it was really thick and would take me lots of time to read. Wrong! I couldn't put it down. I finished in less than a week.

Excellent story, setting, and characters. Good job, Dee Kelly! I hope you're working on another one.

Great book, one that keeps you thinking about the plot even after you close the covers. Hopefully a movie is next.

Great entertainment and a quick read! Maggie and Popov came to life off the pages as real characters with past mistakes who took a chance at redemption. I also got a feel for the beauty of Russia at Christmas due to the author's knowledge of the places described. Did the relic around which much of the story revolves have real supernatural powers? Dee Kelly leaves that decision up to the reader. I read the hardback, but now that the audio version is available, I'd like to hear the Russian pronunciations.
