Alice in Condoland Kindle Edition

4.9 4.9 out of 5 stars 31 ratings

Alice Miller is an idealistic young woman who leaves the New York rat race in search of a more passionate and authentic life in South Florida. Her Manhattan salary affords her an ocean-facing condominium and luxury beyond her wildest, Upper West Side dreams. Those dreams, however, become a nightmare when she discovers corruption everywhere--in the news, at work, and in her new building, where self-dealing managers blatantly misuse her hard-earned cash. How can she fight back--and win--against pervasive fraud?

Fully appreciative of the often-comical multi-cultural swirl around her, Alice meets a series of characters--the Champion, Sherlock Holmez, Joanna Rivers, and Florence Nightingale--who become her friends. Working together, they bridge Condoland's English/Spanish divide. The Jews, Latins, and Latin Jews of Condoland join forces, launching an all-out campaign to overthrow their Board of Drektors. In the midst of this struggle, Alice blooms. She reassesses her life, relationships, and career, leaving behind what no longer serves her. By eschewing the opinions of others, Alice builds self-confidence to pursue her happiness.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Amusing plot . . . witty narration . . . precise, hilarious caricature . . . and crack comic dialogue that keeps the pages turning. . . . Perfect for readers looking for a beach read with memorable characters but real-world problems." --Booklife Reviews

"Bieler's delightful romp of unlikely characters through a wickedly funny condo has laugh-out-loud moments and a thoroughly satisfying ending. Anyone living in a condo, or who knows someone who is, will recognize the intrigues, infights, and friendships of condo living and will cheer Alice as she navigates this wacky world." --Susan Sussman, author of The Dieter and Miami Iced

"Liz Bieler takes you deep inside the world of condo politics, Florida style. You'll fall in love (or hate) with each of the deliciously described characters and their various adventures. Written with heart, pathos, and a lot of Jewish humor, Alice in Condoland reads like a movie, and it will surely become one." --Dr. Frank Luntz, author of New York Times Bestsellers Words That Work and What Americans Really Want . . . Really

"Laugh-out-loud funny. . . Liz Bieler has created a diverse collection of characters led by a likable heroine that entertain and educate the reader throughout. . . . One of those hard to put down books that cross my path from time to time. . . . I loved this book." --Kevin Cannon, Reedsy Discovery("Must read," five-star review)

I loved reading this book!!!
I truly loved reading Alice in Condoland! There were times that I laughed out loud and times when I felt myself inspecting my own life based on what is happening with the characters. There is love and loss and coming into your own. The book is written in a way that you feel like you are sitting with them during their conversations. You truly become a part of it.I am a very slow reader and found this to be a very easy, quick read! I really enjoyed this book and I hope you do too!

This book was extremely relatable to problems, faced by many people in homeowner associations across the nation. Over 50% of Americans, homeowners, associations, and these “private” Corporations are the civil liberties of American Civilians at risk. These are major issues that need more attention and coverage. I hope others will read this book and wake up to the serious issues of major corruption in these establishments

What a fun read!!! I laughed out load several times, Alice is funny :))). From the characters names to her Yiddish shout outs (we need to keep this alive more than ever now) the author keeps you engaged, entertained and on the edge of your seat. I’m glad I don’t live in a condo…scary stuff. Read it! You won’t regret it!

What a delightful read! Not just a fun beach book, this is perfect for those who’ve suffered under the oppression of their HOA or condo board. Learn how to plot your own revenge against HOA directors on the take!

Our heroine, Alice, uncovers the shenanigans of those elected to protect the interests of owners in a large, Miami condominium complex where fees keep increasing while the building goes in need of major repairs. The condo dwellers are a mix of aging American snow birds and South American exiles who either too out of touch or distrustful of the justice system to take on the powers that be in their corrupt condo association.

Can Alice stage a successful coup d'état to oust the condo board members on the take? Will the board member with Mafia ties make good on is threats against Alice? Will that cute guy ever ask her out again? Most importantly: Will Alice’s property decline in value?

While there is a lot of Jewish humor it will be enjoyed by the goyim (me included!) as well. Buy it to read on South Beach or on the flight down to get you in the mood.

Highly recommend!

In her book, Alice shares often hilarious and always "are you kidding me" funny life stories experienced when she left New York to live in Florida. Along the way, she meets a colorful bunch of characters described with insightful nicknames such as the Champion, the Connector, and the Oracle that helps us understand this story as an unlikely group comes together to form new friendships and navigate social politics as they uncover the Condominium board corruption hidden in plain sight inflating costs, draining resources and driving the residents of this South Florida Tower crazy.

Leveraging ethnic humor and Yiddish terms, the book is laugh-out-loud" funny, but despite that humor, the book also touches on powerful themes of love, family, and coping with loss. She is candid about her sorrow with her father's passing, her struggles to rediscover a relationship with her mom, and her own romantic entanglements. Liz's writing style is conversational making the book fun, engaging, and easy to read.

One would have to be meshuggeneh to not love this story.

A thoroughly entertaining and candid look into the dynamics of a South Florida condo association and retirement community. With all that is going on in the world today, and how this region has become the epicenter of a rightward shift in American values, we get a front-row seat to the attitudes and dynamics of this dysfunction on a personal level. From the antics of corporate America to the short-sightedness of penny-pinching neighbors we see the dynamics that leads to such tragedies as the Surfside condo collapse just down the road. A fun and educational read!!!

Fiction? Really? Alice in Condoland cleverly conceals what sounds more like real-life drama. The characters are so vivid they'll live in your head long after the novel ends. You won't want it to end.
I related so deeply to the characters and the story that I found it hard to put down. The writing is clever. The cultural references will have you doubled over in laughter. I cannot wait for Liz to write her next novel.

BTW: I was knee-deep in work and had so many deadlines to meet that it took me longer to read than I would have liked. The timing was great because reading this book was my way to decompress. Delightful!

When I started this book, I thought it was going to be a light-hearted beach read. And then the book turned out to be about a struggle for justice. Our plucky protagonist Alice and her friends find themselves fleeced by their corrupt condominium board. I found myself thinking of Jenny Holzer's line, "Abuse of power comes as no surprise." But these people don't put up with it. Protecting their homes, seizing power over their own lives, and getting rid of the perpetrators seems at times to be an impossible task. Yet they do it, through cooperation and teamwork. _Alice in Condoland_ is a humorous, tongue-in-cheek analysis of how a society rights itself. Which is something we really need to be thinking about right now. Brava, Liz Bieler! This is a book we need!
