About the author
Shana Hammaker grew up in California, then bounced around the country for a bit before settling in Austin, Texas.
Likes: stories that make her laugh and highlight the fact that all people are flawed and all people are beautiful, but not all in the same ways.
Dislikes: over-use of archaic terms such as forsooth and verily. I say verily! Cut it out! Forsooth!
Life is held together by stories and hope. Shana is a bit of a hope junkie.

Exactly what was going on and how it was going to shake out kept me guessing and intrigued through the entire book. Along with an engaging story is plenty of background to give perspective and get the reader thinking about the issue of gun violence in the US. Ideally, we would be able to make some progress in improving things in that area without having to enlist Santa’s help, but just in case I know what I’m asking Santa do for me this Christmas. Give this a read and see if you agree.

I love the way the mythology of Santa Clause is woven into the story. Despite the fact that Santa is a major player in the story, it felt very realistic. I am a tertiary victim of gun violence (more than once) and at times this was a hard, emotional read for me because my thoughts since the first instance on New Year’s Day 1993 were staring back at me from the page. Those thoughts were handled with care, love, and dignity. This book was strangely cathartic for me. I was sobbing crying a few times, but at the end there was a true sense of relief and clarity. The Santa Strike is a much needed book in the “unprecedented times” we can’t seem to escape from.
