4.8 4.8 out of 5 stars 7 ratings

What does it mean to be a witness of charity?

In this book, Witness of Charity, J. F. Rodrigo examines this question by means of understanding the true meaning of Christian love.

Love—a theological virtue—is highly misunderstood by most Christians. As you work through this reasoned study, Rodrigo encourages all Christians to pay heed and fully understand the foundational premises of this virtue. With a concrete understanding of this virtue, you will be able to navigate and resolve daily challenges confronted in everyday life situations; and by applying this virtue, you will move closer to Jesus and increasingly becoming a true witness of charity!

Arranged as a back-to-the-basics study book, in Witness of Charity, you’ll learn the answers to several key questions:

  • What is the true meaning of Christian charity?
  • What is the true meaning of Christian love?
  • What is the true meaning of Christian mercy?
  • Does the Law—10 Commandments—apply to a Christian?
  • How are we justified, by our works or by our faith?
  • What does it really mean to love our neighbour?
  • What does it really mean to love our enemy?
  • What does it really mean to be a Good Samaritan?
  • And, what is the Ultimate source of Christian love?

Even though theological and sometimes pedantic in his explanations, with clarity and cogency Rodrigo explains the answers to these questions and many more.

In sum: written in clear and plain English for the person-in-the-pew, Witness of Charity is both a study of the true meaning of Christian love and a rallying cry for all Christians—Catholics, Orthodox, Protestants, Anglicans—to wake up, be alert, understand, and live out the faith we profess. Keeping things in perspective, Rodrigo, applies realistic explanations and conclusions providing an enduring testament to the power of true Christian love; as a result of reading this book, you will receive the necessary foundational tools to navigate life’s complexities and become a faithful witness of charity!

Product description

From the Back Cover

As a Christian, are we a witness to something or of something? Alternately, are we a witness to someone or of someone? The way we answer these questions will determine our worldview. Here, we will study these questions from a true Christian perspective.

In this study we will look at the following:

  • What is Christian charity?
  • What is Christian love?
  • Are we justified by our works or by our faith?
  • Does the law and its commandments apply to us?
  • What does it mean to love our neighbour?
  • What does it mean to love our enemy?
  • What is Christian mercy?
  • And, what is the Ultimate source of love?

Once we know and understand the answers, we will ask and answer another: As a Christian, how do we now live our life accordingly?

"It is my desire that you will use this work to spread the important message of true Christian charity that is so desperately needed in our world."
* Bishop William T. McGrattan

"This little book, Witness of Charity ... brings 'fresh eyes' to some of our basic teachings on charity."
* Bishop Emeritus F. B. Henry

Deeply profound and yet so understandable and relatable! Definitely one of the best books I’ve read and has help me to understand how much deeper and more meaningful relationship with God and with each other.

The Witness of Charity is a labour of love by an author who is constitutionally energized to encourage Christians to live out their Christian beliefs in practical terms. The book’s focus is on the term “charity” as “love,” especially the form of love that theologians call agape love, love that originates with God and which He pours out on humanity. Moreover, it is the type of love that God asks Christians to express sacrificially to others.

The author has made a thorough study of the topic from a considerable understanding of the original biblical languages. He does not oversimplify the topic—he introduces Greek or Hebrew terms with no apology; however, he carefully explains their meaning. Although the book is written from a Roman Catholic perspective and quotes Catholic sources for the most part, its contents are thoroughly based on the text of Scripture; all Christians may benefit from its teaching.

Because the book is written for laypersons who wish to further their theological understanding and its application to everyday life, I highly recommend it. It is suitable for personal reading or discussion in small groups.

' Witness of Charity'... Your use of words to contextualize your ideology and harmonize your thought pattern was very commendable. Your bibliography and detailed research were very evident throughout the book. Aside from this, I found myself following along with inspired interest, guided by your ordered pattern of study from one chapter to the next. You have a keen sense of keeping things into perspective, applying realistic explanations and drawing conclusions to the multi-faceted graces handed down by God to the human race. To coin a well-known phrase: 'Love is a many splendored thing'; however, authored by the ALMIGHTY. I think that your book will find itself in many people's hands to come.

This is an amazing book; chock full of much needed information for our times. I recommend this to all persons, not just Christians. If the world could take even a smidgeon of what this book offers and put it into practice, ‘what a wonderful world’ this could be!
