Lynette Long, Ph.D. is a math education expert. She is a former elementary and middle school principal, high school mathematics teacher, and college professor at Loyola University in Baltimore, American University in Washington, D.C., and the University of Maryland. Long has taught more than twenty different courses in the areas of education and mathematics and has published more than twenty-five books.

About the Publisher
In the 1930s, Manuel H. Barron opened a bookstore in Brooklyn, New York. 
People from the community asked Mr. Barron about books that might be available to help their children study for the New York State Regents exams. After realizing there wasn't anything available, Mr. Barron created his own study guides.

I'm a 72 y old retiree with a history of math-phobia in my early education decades ago. I decided to remedy that with the time I now have available, and to keep the cogs in the old noodle turning. The book is mostly clear and helpful but I have found, and continue to find, a number of irritating publisher misprints that take quite a bit of deduction to find what the author originally intended. Learning the subject can be challenging enough without such misdirection from unfortunate misprints. By this the publisher has done the author a disservice. Having said that I don't regret the purchase as on balance I have found it helpful in my recovery from said math-phobia.

This explains algebra in clearer terms than any textbook I've ever seen. If you study each section carefully and fully, you should be able to solve the Brain Teasers correctly.

The examples worked through are clear and simple HOWEVER the "brain ticklers" used to practice the concepts in each chapter are beyond what was explained. This is NOT a book you can just pick up and teach yourself algebra or even brush up on long lost knowledge, there appears to be areas of assumed knowledge. You think you understand a concept then you go and practice with the questions given and get completely lost. I gave up in exasperation. Painless algebra it is NOT!

This book professes to be painless, but it is actually very tedious and painful! I wouldn't buy it again. I was trying to buy something that would be fun for my 7th grader to learn algebra, but this book definitely was not it!!
