Advent devotional on 1 Corinthians 13, reflecting on Jesus―the source of authentic, divine, transforming love.
Everyone seems to say that Christmas is about love. It’s in the songs we hear as we shop for presents and in the adverts we see on TV. It’s in the cards we send and on the gift tags we write.
And Christians can agree. Christmas really is about love, because love came down at Christmas in the person of Jesus Christ.
This Advent devotional contains 24 daily readings from 1 Corinthians 13. Sinclair B Ferguson brings the rich theology of the incarnation to life with his trademark warmth and clarity. We'll see what “love” looked like in the life of Christ and be challenged to love like him.
Each day's reading finishes with a question for reflection and a prayer.
However you're feeling, your heart will be refreshed as you wonder again at the truth that love came down at Christmas.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 20, 2018One of the challenges during Advent is that usually the same passages of Scripture are used over and over again. Now God's Word never loses its power, relevance or truth, but often the devotionals on the Christmas story can start to sound the same. Sinclair Ferguson is a gifted writer, speaker and preacher, and his devotional exhibits all the hallmarks of his ministry. It is clear, winsome, thoroughly Biblical, thoughtful and wise! He takes an unusual text, 1 Corinthians 13, to show how the Incarnation of Jesus Christ was the ultimate expression of the Lord's love, hence the title: Love Came Down At Christmas. I can't recommend this enough! If you want to grow in your understanding and apprehension of the Lord Jesus Christ's love for you, and be reminded of life-changing truths during the chaotic Christmas season, this is the devotional for you! My only gripe would be that I wish they had produced it in hardback, as the cover design (to me) would look even better on a dust jacket and with a ribbon bookmark. Regardless of the format, this is a Gospel-driven and faithful devotional that will help you in your walk with Christ!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 24, 2021Ferguson has put together a wonderful, thought provoking, heart stirring book that could be titled as a devotional, but I wouldn't call it that. I owned the printed version of this book for about a year and a half, but switched over digital so that I could read it anywhere I go. This book is a thorough description of Love and what Christ did in order to reveal love to us. In Ferguson's book, he analysis love from Paul's letters to the Corinthians and I don't know of many authors who write an Advent book that removes me from the Christmas season (and that isn't a bad thing). Ferguson, Paul and a host of poets and prayer writers point our focus back on Christ (not trees or presents and why we celebrate Christmas) and challenges readers to re-think what love means to them and how Christ's love is a more than sufficient way to change how we love others.
Like everyone on Earth, I struggle with a lot of things Paul writes to the Corinthians. I don't display love as Christ would want me to. Ferguson's Love Came Down at Christmas not only challenges me, but causes me to ponder on my actions and what do I mean when I use the word Love.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 24, 2022This little book has a devotional for each day of the advent season, 24 in all. The author delves into the different aspects of love as gleaned from 1 Corinthians 13. It was perfect as an add on to my devotional time. Each section is long enough to help the reader think about the aspect being discussed, but not so long as to require a huge amount of time. This was my first exposure to Sinclair Ferguson, the author. I will be reading more of his work.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 4, 2024Very easily accessible to the reader, but contains deep theological truths. I love the prayers from church history at the end of each day's reading.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 25, 2023Twenty-four devotions from 1Corinthians 13 on the Advent theme of Love Came Down. “Real love always comes down.”
1 Corinthians 13 describes facets of love which are characteristic of Jesus and ought to be in my life. This is the love of the Father and it is the love that the Holy Spirit is producing in me. Practical encouragement during the season of Advent.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 20, 2022If you’re looking for an advent devotional this is it. This could be read for individual use or for family devotions. Sinclair Ferguson not only has a deep understanding of the Word of God but has a heart that has been transformed by faith, hope and love. I am thankful for him, his gift of teaching, and his love for the Trinity and the body of Christ. I will be reading this again and again and gifting it to others.

wonderfully heart warming reflection on 1 Cor 13
Sinclair Ferguson is soaked in Scripture and in the Puritans... the result: a deep devotional slow read verse by verse through 1 Corinthians 13.
Great for Advent and for any time of the year
highly recommended
