Woke up to one of my power heads fizzing and buzzing in my 75g salwater tank..the wire that attaches to the powerhead had came apart exposing the copper wires...i'm sure it was just sparking away i there.....I've had this powerhead for atleast 2 years... i also noticed my old powersurge strip's "protected/grounded" light was out....tried resettting but did't come back on so I decided to just replace it with a new one...I didn't know anything about stray voltage in fish tanks until i started researching exposed/damaged wires in tanks just a couple of days ago when my powerhead took a dump..through the long years of owning fishtanks...I've never once been electrocuted while sticking my hand in the water...but since i ran across this subject while googling, i decided to test the voltage in the tank....with the filters, powerheads, heater, and light on and without the grounding probe, it was showing around 65 volts (A/C) !!....and with the grounding probe in, it drops to 0.013 volts....i mean from 65v to near 0v is pretty darn good...ive ran the test multple times and the same results so im assuming it works...stuck my hand in and didnt get electrocuted......the high volts in the water probably explains why majority of my fishes were disappearing...only my pair of clowns, striped wrass, and damsel survived.....i just thought maybe my female clownfish killed them because she was beginning to lay eggs and is about 4.5 inches long and very mean....she'd attack my arms and hands when i stick it in the water... but so far the probe looks to be working...it' plug directly into the wall outlet...(non gfci) ...but it'll do until i get a chance to replace some of the equipment i suppose....note* i'm running two MarineLand Penguin 350 biowheel filters.... these were showing about 25ish volts each on my meter...so i know they're the culprits.....just sad...not even 3 years old...

works as intended, tested with my volt meter

I recently purchased a new light for my aquarium. Previously, I had small LED tablets in plastic housings. I put my arms in the tank all of the time without any issue.

The new light is much more powerful (Maxspect Razor 130W) and has a large metal heat sink that is apparently grounded.

The first time I went to feed my tank, I had my hand in the water and my forearm inevitably bumped the Maxspect light. It felt like something was cutting my forearm. Not a really strong shock, but more like a pinch or papercut.

I probed my water for stray A/C voltage, and sure enough, I had the entire 120 VAC! LoL

The culprits ended up being EVERYTHING in the tank other than the return pump; both heaters had a little stray voltage, but the HUGE culprits were/are the Hydor Koralia MaxiJets. I have two of them. One is good for 50 VAC and the other is good for the entire 120 VAC.

I just received this ground probe, put it in my sump, and voila - stray voltage 0! I even put my arm in the tank and intentionally rested it on the light housing as well. No shock.

Maybe coincidentally, my cleaner shrimp that never comes out of hiding during the day is currently roaming the tank at peak light intensity with no fear.

So most importantly I no longer get zapped. Also I have and Emporer Angel who also displayed some sort of issues with white spots, indents, etc. I was reading about their actual susceptible issues with leaking current. After purchasing this in just about two weeks he now looks perfect after he displayed a sickly look for about a year. Wish I would have discovered this sooner. And for those electricians who say these are bad because they complete the circuit, stick to dry electricity and housing clowns 🤡 because your clueless. This grounding rod is a MUST HAVE!

Gets the job done.
Now I have to find where the leaking voltage is coming from!
Reviewed in the United States on January 28, 2015
I had found a low amount of stray voltage in one of my saltwater tanks and had heard some stories from friends of electrically-caused disasters and I decided to purchase a small insurance policy. Considering the amount of electricity I have next to or inside of water, I purchased the grounding probe for each of my tanks and the stray voltage immediately went to zero for the small cost of this probe and the space cost of one outlet space. I had purchased an extra one and ended up giving it to a friend of mine and he has been as pleased as I have. Very simple and easy to use.

Wars have been fought over if a grounding probe is a good idea in your fish tank. But in my opinion, the right answer is to keep it there with a periodic check (take out the probe, check for stray current, fix any discovered problems, replace). Yes, there are reports that tangs can develop HLLE because a probe is allowing current to flow, but the voltage isn't good for your tank and will go somewhere someday (when you touch the water, via a wet cord, your tubing during water changes, who knows).
anyways, this does just fine and definitely works (I can see it on my multimeter via either AC volts or AC amps). My only complaint is the two little plastic guides for the unused part of the outlet are too flimsy and like to bend...they'll probably break if I mess up more times. Not that it really hurts the function...just seems an oversight.
