About the author
J. Warner Wallace is a cold-case homicide detective, popular national speaker and best-selling author. He continues to consult on cold-case investigations while serving as a Senior Fellow at the Colson Center for Christian Worldview. He is also an adjunct professor of apologetics at Biola University and a faculty member at Summit Ministries. J. Warner was a conscientious and vocal atheist until the age of thirty-five, when he took a serious and expansive look at the evidence for the Christian Worldview and determined that Christianity was demonstrably true. After becoming a Christ follower in 1996, Jim continued to take an evidential approach to truth as he examined the Christian worldview. He eventually earned a Master’s Degree in Theological Studies from Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary.
J. Warner’s professional investigative work has received national recognition; his cases have been featured more than any other detective on NBC’s Dateline, and his work has also appeared on CourtTV and Fox News. He also appears on television as an investigative consultant (most recently on truTV) and had a role in God’s Not Dead 2, making the case for the historicity of Jesus. J. Warner was awarded the Police and Fire Medal of Valor “Sustained Superiority” Award for his continuing work on cold-case homicides, and the CopsWest Award after solving a 1979 murder. Relying on over two decades of investigative experience, J. Warner provides his readers and audiences with the tools they will need to investigate the claims of Christianity and make a convincing case for the truth of the Christian worldview.

I was raised in a loving Christian family and had always just accepted the claims of Christianity without ever actually examining any evidence for its truth or the reliability of the claims made in the Gospel accounts of Jesus’ life. That is, until doubt and uncertainty entered the picture and caused me to seriously question the very foundations of my Christian faith. One question led to another:
How do I know that God even exists?
How can I be sure that the resurrection even occurred?
Is Christianity true?
I dove headlong down the rabbit hole of Christian apologetics to resolve my doubts and uncertainties one way or another starting with the big one – Does God exist? (If God does not exist, nothing else really matters!) After listening to numerous apologetics podcasts and debates, I can happily report that I conquered my uncertainty about whether God exists. (He does!) But it was during my initial dive into the question of God’s existence that I discovered J Warner Wallace and Cold-Case Christianity.
And I am so thankful that I came upon Cold-Case Christianity because I was able to use it to address my lingering doubts about Christianity – Is Christianity really true? The truth (or falsity) of Christianity rests on the truth or falsity of the resurrection as claimed in the Gospels. (As Paul states in 1 Corinthians 15:14, “And if Christ has not been raised, then all our preaching is useless, and your faith is useless.”)
In Cold-Case Christianity, J. Warner Wallace applies his cold-case investigative principles to the Gospel accounts of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus to determine the trustworthiness and reliability of the Gospels. Investigations of cold case homicides are in many ways like an investigation of the claims of the Gospels. They each involve events from the distant past for which there is little or no forensic evidence; at best, there are only original eyewitness reports taken from witnesses who are no longer alive. Cold-case homicide investigations take those original eyewitness statements, evaluate their reliability, and verify their observations with what little forensic evidence is available to build a strong cumulative case that satisfactorily establishes the “truth” beyond a reasonable doubt.
In the first section of the book, Wallace explains ten principles of cold-case homicide investigations and evidence that can be applied to the claims of the Gospels. In the second section he applies these principles step-by-step to investigate the Gospels. His investigation led him to conclude that the Gospel accounts, including the deity, death, and resurrection of Jesus, were reliable eyewitness testimony and that Christianity is true beyond a reasonable doubt. Absolute certainty is almost never possible, we obviously weren’t there to witness the events claimed in the Gospels firsthand. But, the most reasonable inference is that the Gospel writers were present, corroborated, accurate, and unbiased. From this we can conclude beyond a reasonable doubt that their testimony is reliable and that the claims made in the Gospels are indeed true. Read Cold-Case Christianity and you will be able to make the Case for Christianity with confidence!

- First off, the endorsements were not all from the same notables: Rick Warren, Al Serato, and Rick Schenker were no longer there; in addition, Rice Brooks, Alisa Childers, Frank Turek, and Tim Barnett were added. I can understand why there would be additions because this is an update and could be freshly reviewed. The deletions I have my own ideas about and were probably warranted.
- Pg. 72 in the original uses the Michael Jackson case as an example; the updated version uses the Robert Durst case.
- Pg. 74 eliminates the side bar "A disagreement is not a Disqualifier. Pg. 78 adds detail and appropriation to the sidebar "The Early Recognition of the Eyewitnesses.
- Pg. 113 in the new edition inserts the Clue board game as an example with illustrations.
- Pg 221 in the new addition under "Archeology Continues to Corroborate the Gospels", the author adds a number of new discoveries surrounding people, cities, locations, customs, events, and conditions.
- Pg 235 in the 1st edition uses a mobile dispatch computer + illustration as a reference example; in the new edition it is changed to a smartphone (I'm sure for a more meaningful exhibit to most readers).
- The added Afterward "The Case Cross-Examined" is an excellent addition worth purchasing the new book alone. It is compiled from students' and skeptics' issues and questions. These are examined forthrightly and answered or refuted very well.
- In the appendix on Case Files "Expert Witnesses", the author deleted some from the 1st edition and added some others as well. Under Case Files "Assisting Officers" in the same chapter, a number were omitted and added in the new edition with the total being the same.
- Case Files "Case Notes" is represented in the new volume by a QR code or URL to access the note references. This is the one aspect of the new edition I did not care for. I like to have the notes right there for reference while I am reading.
This new edition is well worth purchasing even if you have the original. I only listed a selection of the updates and additions made; there are many. Sometimes just a word of phrase is changed for improvement and clarity, and many new illustrations were added (which I take were the handiwork of the author!). The print is slightly larger for readability, and overall the improvements were not just window dressing - they were substantial! It is obvious J. Warner Wallace was very proud of his work, and that he put a lot of effort into this new volume. After all, it is what led him from atheist to believer and a whole new career and life in Christ. And for someone like me, it has a great impact.

Wallace clearly lays out underlying principles and concepts that are essential in understanding and evaluating the basis for any kind of religious conviction: the distinction between objective and subjective truth, the nature and limits of different kinds of evidence, legitimate inference and abductive reasoning, how to test eyewitness testimony and other evidence, and many more. Our sons and daughters (now in their late teens and early twenties) have become more firmly committed to their own faith and have also been able to encourage peers and to engage positively and productively with friends who disagree using skills and information taught in this and in Wallace's other books.
Cold-Case Christianity is the distillation of many hours of deep and careful study. Lucid prose and appealing artwork make it easy to read, but it is by no means a simplistic book. Read it carefully, master its content and you may find yourself embarking on a fascinating, lifelong journey of discovery. You will read and study the Bible, assess competing claims and engage with the world around you very differently if you do!
