Dinner at God's House: A Novel Paperback – April 24, 2024

What kind of life is possible when you finally learn to forgive, trust, and love yourself?
Erik Bernstein wasn’t afraid of death. He was afraid of life. He battled with inadequacy and the feeling that he never belonged. He became an expert at deflecting intimacy to mask his shame, lies, self-doubt, and bad choices. From the time he was eleven years old, or even younger, death was never far from his mind. Needless to say, death was front of mind as he sat in the back corner of the synagogue, watching his own funeral.
Long confused by religion and the belief in an all-knowing sky spirit, Erik is surprised to receive an unexpected invitation to dinner at God’s house. Unsure of who or what God even is, Erik embarks on an introspective journey with his childhood dog, Blondie, where he meets his long-lost best friend and other surprising characters from his life.
Just as he begins to uncover the truths behind his most painful relationships and make peace with the demons that haunted him, Erik has an opportunity to meet God.
And with one question, things become especially uncomfortable.
Dinner at God’s House is a profound and thought-provoking metaphysical novel based loosely on the author’s life. Raw and insightful, it tells a compelling story of mental health, courage, personal growth, forgiveness, faith, spirituality, and healing.

Review
"This book is a must-read for those of us who feel and think and grind through the days knowing that with courage there can be peace. Even just for a minute. Dinner at God's House is not just Lieman's story. It belongs to all of us. A beautiful and raw story about healing and the choice to live in courage or fear." — Lara Love Hardin, author of The Many Lives of Mama Love and six-time New York Times bestselling author
"I was reminded of Richard Bach's books as I read Dinner at God's House. Lieman writes in raw, emotional prose that makes you want to turn the pages quickly as you are carried through each vivid scene. A must-read for those seeking inspiration and fuel for their own spiritual journey." — Jacob Nordby, author of Blessed Are the Weird and The Creative Cure
"Nick Hornby meets The Alchemist. Lieman has touched on something in this book that few authors can—handling the greatest mysteries of life, the heartbreaks, and disappointments with so much grace and honesty." — Anna-Marie O'Brien, author of Adventures of a Metalhead Librarian
"Dinner at God's House stands out for its multifaceted approach to storytelling, skillfully intertwining philosophical and psychological elements. The book appeals to those who seek a narrative that challenges conventional perspectives on life and death, providing a fresh and engaging reading experience. Lieman's work is commendable for its depth, inviting readers to embark on a journey that is both introspective and enlightening." — Literary Titan 5-star review
From the Author
As described on the back cover, (the main character) Erik Bernstein wasn't afraid of death. He was afraid of life. That's me. And I try to approach and answer the question: What kind of life is possible when you finally learn to forgive, trust, and love yourself?
This is a book about love. Love of self. Love of the miracles around us. Love of life. What happens when you finally stop wearing masks?
As I often say—I know it's not for everyone. But if you struggle with fear, understanding where you belong, or just don't understand "why you feel that way," Dinner at God's House might well be for you.
It's not about God. It's not about religion. But it is very much about what it feels like to have faith in ourselves.

About the author
Todd B. Lieman is a communications veteran with a passion for creating connections. As a storyteller, creative executive, and team builder, he has worked with brands, start-ups, influencers, and global events. Lieman considers some of his most purposeful work to be speaking at college campuses. His “Power of Connection” talk includes impactful stories and personal practices for the development of mindful self-alignment and individual connection. He wrote his novel, "Dinner at God’s House" as a metaphysical exploration of his journey to find courage and emotional peace.
While it took him a while to accept walking as exercise, Lieman is happiest exploring new streets and trails or just throwing a ball to his dog in local parks. He lives in Northern California and readily admits that his wife and son are the true creative forces in his life.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 30, 2024I really needed this book, and loved the free-flowing writing style. Lieman tells a deeply personal story in an engaging way that resonated deeply with me. The story took me to the challenging places in my life, and then to the places in my heart where love and gratitude live. Despite the title, for me, the story wasn't really about "God" in a religious sense. But it is about spirituality, and about all of the ways that our lives are connected, including the ways that we can't possible comprehend. I read this book right after I had finished Sam Harris' "Waking Up." For me, they were a great pairing.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 11, 2024I highly recommend Dinner at God’s House. Todd Lieman brought forth a deep and thoughtful self examination that was incredibly relatable through very creative story telling that intrigued me and made me want to eagerly turn pages. I even brought out my highlighter and found myself re-reading chapters since they were so packed full of insights that I could apply to my life. Thank you Todd for creating this brilliant piece of work that was so thought provoking, stimulating, interesting and helpful. I will re-read this again as my personal journey continues to unfold. I have already bought a copy to share with others as I know so many people would benefit.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 29, 2024This book is such a beautiful gift as the author, through his main character Erik, allows us to "listen in" as he confronts and questions the veracity of his inner stories that have long caused him to struggle with life. We get to see how the meaningful questions, that so many of us have, are answered for Erik, through his dinner at God's house. Todd Lieman's writing is so very honest, relatable and enjoyable. Great read!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 5, 2024This book is exquisitely written with language like lyrics and sentences and storylines the take the reader on an unexpected, compelling journey. Every time I thought I had my bearings, the author introduced another twist. But setting aside the beautiful craftmanship, the author brings a completely original exploration to the time honored topics of self doubt and the meaning of life. Here's the thing: he doesn't just explore them -- he actually pushes through to a new level of insight and connection through the sheer honestly (=compelling) of his writing. I knew from the reviews I would enjoy the writing and book -- I was surprised at the profound impact it has had on me. (I didn't just laugh and cry -- I wept.)
- Reviewed in the United States on April 26, 2024Initially, I wasn't sure about this book because I don't gravitate towards titles that contain the word God. Despite my hesitation, I dove in, and I'm glad I did. The author's creativity, self-reflection, and philosophical elements combine beautifully to create a story that is resonant, soulful, and entertaining.
Each chapter opens with a reference to an incredible example of kismet - all interesting, cool, and relevant to the protagonist's journey (see photo).
And about my God skepticism? The book explores religion, death, God, and "God's House" in an approachable and, at times, amusing manner. The bigger focus is on Erik's feelings of self-doubt and self-criticism. As he examines his relationship with his parents, sibling, wife and friends, it's hard not to reflect on our own self views and relationships.
I'm so glad this book is out in the world!

Images in this review - Reviewed in the United States on July 7, 2024I savored this book; literally paced myself by reading a chapter or 2 a day. My book is highlighted and I have notes all over the margins. It’s really a book that you want to discuss with others. Enjoy:)
- Reviewed in the United States on May 1, 2024I almost never write reviews, but this book really compelled me – the deeper I got into its pages the more I wanted to share it with everyone I know. It’s magical and insightful and even makes you laugh (and yes, cry) along the way. Although God is in the title, it’s not a religious book. The story feels part autobiographical and part fantastical, and the two interweave in creative ways that make you feel and make you think. A reframing of sorts, and a reminder of ideas that are worth being reminded of. A really special page turner.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 30, 2024A clever, exciting, page-turner of a book about loving yourself enough to never give up. To keep searching for your answers, for your truth … for yourself.
Like Lieman, I was a smart, funny guy. I also battled with my own depression as I tried to figure out who I was in the sea of what I was supposed to be.
I suspect you’ll see yourself in Lieman’s book as well.
There is much to learn from someone who’s figured out a better way … I can’t recommend finding your way to a copy of Dinner at God’s House strongly enough. Read it, laugh a lot, cry a little, learn a lot, and pass it on to another to learn.
We all need this.
