James L. Lipscomb pays homage to the Negro community, now extinct, that existed in Coeymans, New York in the first half of the twentieth century. The residents were largely migrants from Virginia and Carolinas in search of a better life. Lipscomb introduces you to the people of the Negro community with engaging profiles that brings the community to life again. Lipscomb traces his childhood history as he began working outside the home at age nine, became an accomplished house painter at twelve, and eventually moved beyond Coeymans to pursue an education at Howard University and later at Columbia University School of Law. While disclosing experiences that included adjusting to cultural change and academic challenges while attending law school and serving as a poll watcher in Mississippi where he was afraid to use the bathroom at night, Lipscomb also details the struggles of the times as America endured major societal changes.

I bought this for my husband as a gift because he grew up with the author. He is loving the book. It is bringing back fond memories they both shared. It's a beautiful poignant walk down memory lane.

James has an amazing story about hard work and America. Many of us have diverse, immigrant backgrounds, but James brings out the rich history and detail of his personal upbringing. What he was able to accomplish in his early lifetime is what most families do over the span of three or four generations. From the poorest of the poor in New York - saving his money from painting to buy his mom her first coat - to a local community college that ultimately led to Columbia University and a leadership position at a Fourtune 500 company. Reaching such accomplishment early in one lifetime -with little support - is truly inspirational and motivational. I highly recommend. Linda Alto

The humble story of James’ early life itself is a human drama. So touching to feel the pain, frustration, indignation and hardship which did not anger but propelled James to one of America’s leading legal expert and leader in the corporate world, instead of being damaged and buried by the hardship. It brings thrill, hope, energy and encouragement for millions of young people, under privileged and poor, regardless of race, African American, Latino or Asian immigrants and the poor whites.
Strongly recommend the elementary, middle and high school to stock this Memoir in their libraries for the young and impressionable students who are willing to ride the challenge. Jay Chang

I totally enjoyed reading this book. I'm a little younger than the author but had many of the same teachers he did, went to the same Dr. I Learned a lot about life down the hill. Loved where the title came from (not where one thinks from the cover).

This book shares a remarkable trajectory of a man who grew up in a community with many challenges and joys. The powerful journey from that community through Howard University and Columbia Law School gives deep insight into one human being's life as well as the times he lived through. The personal commitment of the writer as well as his care for others grows as he tells his story. James Lipscomb is a man who has gone through tough times and has helped many others in his lifetime. I highly recommend this book. Taylor Field
