This book bridges the gap between knowledge management and technology. It embraces the complete lifecycle of knowledge, information, and data from how knowledge flows through an organization to how end users want to handle it and experience it. Whether your intent is to design and implement a single technology or a complete collection of KM systems, this book provides the foundations necessary for success. It will help you understand your organization’s needs and opportunities, strategize and prioritize features and functions, design with the end user in mind, and finally build a system that your users will embrace and which will realize meaningful business value for your organization.

The book is the culmination of the authors’ collective careers, a combined sixty years of experience doing exactly what is detailed in this book. Their guidance has been honed by their own successes and failures as well as many others they have researched in order to provide a comprehensive study on KM transformations and the technologies that help to enable them. They have successfully applied this knowledge as the founders and leaders of the world’s largest dedicated knowledge management consultancy, which runs these projects for many of the world’s most complex organizations. They are writing as practitioners directly to other practitioners with the intent to enable them to apply and benefit from their knowledge and experience.

“Compelling reading for KM practitioners looking to ensure their technology decisions support their business and organizational objectives.”

- Margot Brown, Director of Knowledge Management, World Bank Group

"We are two years into our KM Transformation and if I’d had this book beforehand, it would have made the journey smoother and faster! This is a great playbook for how to plan, organize, and execute a KM transformation."

- Stephanie Hill, Senior Director, Global Customer Services, PayPal

Editorial Reviews

Review

“This book … spans the crevasse between KM and IT and does so with considerable flair. … this is a very good overview of the importance of integrating KM and IT and should be on the desktop of all KM managers, especially in larger organisations with complex IT infrastructures. The experience of the authors is evident throughout and they write in an engaging style which makes for a very readable book.” (Martin White, intranetfocus.com, June 30, 2022)

Practical Guide for KM Written by True Experts
Whether you’re new to Knowledge Management (KM) or an experienced expert and practitioner, I highly recommend picking up a copy of “Making Knowledge Management Clickable” for yourself and for your colleagues. Wahl and Hilger are renowned in the field because of their ability to foresee KM trends way before most organizations have caught onto them. Beyond that, they have a track record of developing and applying KM best practices to even the most complex challenges encountered by the top organizations in the world. In true KM fashion, they openly share the concepts, tools, and methods that have worked for them in this book. You can read this book from cover to cover to get a holistic understanding of how to take a practical approach to KM, then depending on where you are in your KM journey, go back to targeted areas that will help you address the specific issues you’re struggling to resolve within your organization. The book help you take both a technical and non-technical approach to KM, as well as a long-term, strategic and near-term quick wins approach. The section on prioritization at the end of Chapter 3 is particularly helpful because a KM effort can quickly become overwhelming without a way to surface up the most critical needs that should be addressed. All in all, this book is comprehensive in covering the KM topics that all organizations should be considering, regardless if they are mission-driven or are more focused on achieving business results. As the workplace shifts into a new way of working in a more hybrid, global manner, we are all in essence knowledge managers and this book is our guide to helping our organizations thrive and survive. Timely access to institutional knowledge is and will continue to be a competitive advantage and this book helps you to make that possible regardless of where you work.

This is one of the best books on any subject that I have ever read. It is clear that the authors are knowledgeable and experienced. It goes through the basics in a way that you can apply them, and then goes through successes and failures honestly. It also makes a clear case for the critical nature of good knowledge management, and how to navigate the "everyone knows KM is extremely important, but we'll do it in our spare time" attitude.

I reserved this book when it first came out because the two authors are quite well known in the KM space and I wanted to hear their thoughts on making KM work.

First of all, I love the name. The best KM transformations are highly visible and involve people, process, and technology changes. I plan to use this with my clients in the future.

The book itself is very comprehensive. It describes every step of a KM Transformation from the initial strategy and the development of a business case to the implementation of the solutions. I really liked the list of products that are common in KM transformations, especially how they are best integrated together. I hear many of these products mentioned and I do not always know how they fit from a KM perspective. This book answers that question for me.

It is quite long, so I would not necessarily recommend sitting down and reading it cover to cover. Use the table of contents to find the topic you are most interested in and dive deep into that topic.

Overall, this is a great book for anyone who is working on or planning a KM transformation.

This is a really good book for KM Professionals. It covers all the key topics and takes a really broad view of Knowledge Management, which seems to be the trend these days.

Pros: 1) The book is not theory, it is highly practical with how-to's and checklists and a complete benchmark. 2) It is clearly written from a position of authority and experience. 3) It covers technologies in detail and by name, which makes for a really good starting point for anyone doing technology considerations or selections.

Cons: 1) The authors clearly have a very specific way of approaching all of this. The book doesn't provide a lot of alternative theories or approaches. If you're looking for an academic review of different methodologies and the relative strengths and weaknesses of each, this is not the book for you. 2) It doesn't include much on the ISO standard for KM...not sure if this was on purpose or not.

Overall, this is the best new addition to the space I've seen in a while. Two thumbs up.

As a Knowledge Management novice, a colleague suggested I do some reading on the topic to help me better understand how my company works, and to learn more of the lingo. This book more than answered the mail. It covers not just what KM is, but why it is important and what the many ways a company can get value out of it are. I am not a "full-time" KM practitioner, but the book put this all in a way that was easy for me to understand and to act on. The book goes really deep into KM technologies, methodologies, and designs, which isn't fully necessary for me, but it is really well indexed and I trust I'll be able to easily go back to it to reference when I have questions.

The book is very readable and approachable, while still covering a ton of really deep knowledge. I highly recommend it.

This book was recommended by a colleague. In my job, I need to understand knowledge management, but don't actively do it every day. I am familiar with the KM basics and lingo through my job, but didn't have the exposure necessary to really understand all of the work. This book did a great job of putting everything together for me. It is a really good reference when a term comes up that I don't know, but there are also whole chapters that spell out exactly how to perform complex KM tasks and activities. I'd definitely recommend this to anyone who wants to go deeper into KM and is looking to better understand the field, not just from a conceptual standpoint, but in reality.
