What Would Reagan Do?: Life Lessons from the Last Great President Hardcover – February 6, 2024
Purchase options and add-ons
A lot, says New York Times bestselling author and former New Jersey governor Chris Christie. In What Would Reagan Do?, Christie takes a fresh look at President Ronald Reagan’s character-driven political instincts and deeply impactful relationships across party lines—finding plenty of compelling insights for our current national dysfunction.
In each chapter, Christie spells out a lesson from a different point in Reagan’s journey, then ties all those lessons to the national challenges of today.
When Reagan turned from Hollywood to politics, America was at another breaking point. The economy was battered. Trust in government was at an all-time low. US foreign policy was an embarrassment, and Western ideals were facing enormous challenges in the world, especially from the Russians and the Chinese.
Sound familiar? Enter a fading actor who would become the 40th president of the United States.
Countless books have been written about President Reagan’s strong conservative leadership. But Christie says few people fully appreciate the clarity of vision and subtle human relations skills that Reagan brought to the negotiating table and into the political realm. Reagan had a remarkable ability to find common ground across party lines—as Christie puts it, to “compromise without being compromised.” Building on lessons from his own hardscrabble upbringing, Reagan transformed the Republican Party and the political landscape forever.
Two decades after Reagan’s death, Christie shows how the life lessons of the beloved president are more alive than ever—and can restore American leadership again.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 21, 2024I started voting republican after watching and hearing President Ronald Reagan at a Young Republican event my freshman year in college and have voted republican since then. I loved reading this book because it is a study in contrast, between the moral character and vision that President Reagan showed and what the current Republican front runner and alot of his political followers are and have been displaying since the early 2010s. Christie weaves stories and experiences that Ronald Reagan used to not only shape his character and beliefs and then compares them with what is happening now and the lessons that can be learned moving forward. This was a wonderful read and I highly recommend it!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 9, 2024I'm a big Reagan fan, and I'm a big fan of self-improvement...so this book should have been a home run for me.
For the most part it's well written and it covers interesting parts of Reagan's history.
Unfortunately, Christie often uses the book to mock former President Trump as well.
No other former president is derided elsewhere in the book, only the 45th...which comes off as petty and uncalled for.
Book could have removed those sentences and been a full 5 stars. Instead I took off a start for the distracting commentary that did not add any context or value to the stories being told.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 3, 2024The thing that Christie brings out very well is what a good, decent man Reagan was - a true "compassionate conservative" who always saw the good in people yet faced down the Evil Empire and actually got Gorbachev to "tear down this wall!"
- Reviewed in the United States on February 19, 2024I really enjoyed the read! The book describes the ability that Reagan had to bring all people together. Unfortunately, we don’t have that. Trump should read this book and learn!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2024Bought the book because I like Christie and Reagan.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 11, 2024This book is half fiction and half opinion
Chris Christie says he a Republican but acts likes a Democrat looking for votes. He is just upset that once again he’s never going to be president of the United States.
This is his way of using Reagan’s name to sell a book to pay for his bill. Pathetic
