The Girls of Victory Street: An absolutely heartbreaking World War 2 family saga (The Bryant Sisters Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 5,657 ratings

‘I absolutely adored this book! I could not put it down, probably one of the fastest I have read a book this year… If you enjoy historical fiction, you will love this. The perfect book to curl up on the sofa with.’ Raesbookshelf

From Amazon bestseller Pam Howes comes an emotional World War Two saga about three young women whose bravery and friendship will see them through the darkest times.

Liverpool, 1939. Bella Rogers thought her life was just starting; she can’t wait to get married to her childhood sweetheart, Bobby. But when war is declared and Bobby is called up, his letters stop, leaving Bella heartbroken and alone. Then her family is torn apart by tragedy when her angelic five-year-old sister dies from a terrible illness. They can barely afford a funeral, but the church is packed with the entire community, devastated for their loss.

Grieving for her sister and lost love, Bella finds a job at the
Bryant and May factory, making matches. As bombs begin to fall, Bella gets the workers singing, keeping spirits high amidst the fear. When she meets a handsome American airman, Earl Franklin Jr, Bella’s heart finally starts to mend. Earl encourages her passion and soon she and her friends are offered the opportunity of a lifetime: to travel the country’s army bases, entertaining the troops and singing for victory. They name themselves The Bryant Sisters.

Just as her life is getting back on track, Bella finds herself pregnant – and
Earl reveals a shattering secret that changes everything about their future. Devastated, she flees home to Liverpool, but as an unmarried mother, will her family reject her? And, as she faces a terrible sacrifice, will she ever sing with The Bryant Sisters again?

A heartbreaking historical novel about women in wartime, friendship, family and hope. Perfect for fans of Nadine Dorries, Diney Costeloe and Wives of War.

Readers absolutely adore The Girls of Victory Street!

Pam Howes was born in Cheshire. She is an ex Interior Designer who began writing seriously in the mid nineties. The idea for her first novel, set in the sixties, was inspired by her time as a teenager, working in a local record store and hanging around with musicians who frequented the business. That first novel evolved into a series set in the fictional town of Pickford, based on her home town of Stockport. Three Steps to Heaven; 'Til I Kissed You; Always On My Mind; Not Fade Away, and That'll Be The Day, follow the lives and loves through the decades of fictional Rock'n'Roll band The Raiders. Pam is a big fan of sixties music and it's this love that compelled her to write the series. A stand-alone true-life romance, Fast Movin' Train, set in the nineties, was published in early 2012. Pam is mum to three adult daughters, grandma to seven assorted grandchildren, and roadie to one musician partner.

Pam recently signed a second contract with the award winning publisher Bookouture and the first novel in her new Lark Lane series, The Factory Girls of Lark Lane, will be published in July 2018.

Her first series for Bookouture - The Mersey Trilogy - is available in E book, paperback and as audio books.

Victory is not just the name of a street, but also what strong English women lived during WWII. Strong characters in real situations these girls grew up fast. Hard to put down, I laughed and shed a tear as I read this wonderful story.

I love historical fiction and this story was sweet. I am looking forward to seeing what happens to the characters next.

Book comments - You need a proof reader.

‘Well in that case, would you like me to sing with you? The choir will be at the service, so we two can sing “Over the Rainbow” for Molly. I’d like to, if it might make it easier for you.’ Was this supposed to be BETTY?

Fran half smiled. Missing Betty was one of the reasons she’d come out as the sadness was overwhelming at times like this. Should have been Bella.

This book was just ok and the ending is awful. It ends abruptly and says read the next book. This book was good in the beginning and then it got boring. Its characters are ok and the story is not enough to entice me to read the next book.

All of the elements that I mentioned in the title of this review come together in a novel that most readers will read in one session.

Set in World War II Great Britain, Bella's love goes off to war and she dedicates her life to work in a factory where she joins two friends who enjoy singing together to lift spirits. Despite tragedy in her family, Bella consoles herself when she receives an opportunity to join her friends in traveling to entertain the troops with their singing.

There are lots of twists and turns, a bit of romance tinged with sadness as readers follow this trio. Nice character development with lots of attention to historical details.

A quick read that can be continued with more books in the series. I especially suggest it for historical fiction fans.

Three young girls, Bella, Fran & Edie, grew up & became singers named The Bryant Sisters. They joined forces with other entertainers entertaining troops in WWII in England. Bella had a boyfriend, Bobby, who sang with the girls before he entered the war. His parents had chosen a girl for him to marry; but he loved Bella. Alicia was jealous of Bella & told Bobby that she was pregnant with his child; and he marries her. Bella met someone else. Bobby was injured in the war. There are twists & turns in this story. It was one of those books that I felt I didn’t have enough time to read as much as I would have liked at one time!

A good story of the Women and girls during the Second World War. The women and girls left behind when the men were sent or volunteered to fight in the Second World War, were given the jobs to support the war efforts. Some of the jobs women were asked to do, were the same jobs that normally men would have done if war had not started. The three girls in this story were accomplished singers and were sent to the camps to provide a small bit of entertainment for the soldiers. Situations arise, promises made and promises broken are all a part of War stories.

This was a slow moving book but good. I leaned a lot about the war. The ending left you hanging, but I guess that is to get you to read the next one!

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved it!

What a delight this was, I enjoyed every moment of it and was sad when it came to an end.
Bella Rogers, Fran Jackson and Edith (Edie) Potts are three likeable and believable characters and I felt like their invisible friend. We follow their lives: from their final year in school, into work, and then, as they do their bit for the war effort, which is fortunately for them, something that they enjoy doing.
Pam Howes' writing is superb; completely flawless, and her descriptions made me feel that I was there every step of the way, it was so clear in my mind and not only that, I felt every emotion that her characters felt.
I loved the storyline and not knowing how it would end and it had a lot to hold my attention - I didn't want to put it down!
I found this story: sad, heartwarming and very emotional. How people lived compared to today and how people managed during the terrible war and yet they still went about their daily business, keeping the country going in taking some of the men's jobs, rallying round and helping each other, and all this with the worry of whether their loved ones would ever come back to them. Each and every one of them has my respect.
This is the first book in The Bryant Sisters series and to say that I can't wait for the next one is an understatement! I loved the surprises in this book and I know that there will be more to come in the next book.
Thank you very much to the author, for writing such a wonderful story.
I highly recommend this book and it is worth far more than 5 stars!!!
