A novel about obsession, endurance, and chasing the impossible.

CALIFORNIA, 1983. Anneliese is a young ballerina performing with a troupe of dancers ten years her senior. Immersed in new freedom, she is enchanted with Rebecca, the seamstress and costumer for the company. Anneliese's budding attraction to Rebecca surprises and confuses her, but clarity dawns when Rebecca flirts back.

Narrow Girls on a Blue Profound Stage is a novel about identity, obsession, and finally, acceptance. Forging a painful path to awareness, Anneliese gains perspective in the world of performing arts, the dynamics of family, and the passionate personalities whose wild natures match her own.

"In
Narrow Girls on a Blue Profound Stage, Lisa Sellge delivers the story of a young dancer's first experience with love within the intriguing atmosphere of a hand-to-mouth ballet theatre. The San Onofre nuclear power plant protests, the Crosby, Stills and Nash concerts, and most of all, the girl who turns into a woman when she leaves it all behind, will capture your heart. A memorable book, highly recommended." ~Jo-Ann Mapson, author of Owen's Daughter, Hank & Chloe and other books

Lisa Sellge wrote Narrow Girls on a Blue Profound Stage (originally titled The Seamstress) as her Creative Nonfiction thesis at the University of Alaska, but she really began writing the book as she experienced it in the pages of her journals in the early 1980s. Lisa’s creative writing has appeared in Atticus Review, Brevity Blog, 3rd Street Beach Reads Volumes 1 & 2, and Literally Literary.

She is currently writing her second work of autofiction that picks up where Narrow Girls left off. She lives in Washington where she works as a content editor, and photographs birds with the same level of obsession she brought to ballet. Narrow Girls on a Blue Profound Stage is her first novel.

I have met the author, so I wanted to read the book despite the genre being well outside my wheelhouse (I am a retired white dude.) What a delightful surprise this book is! It has Universal themes of first love, the transition from adolescence into adulthood, and the narrator facing both beauty and danger in the world. I immediately drew a parallel to Daniel James Brown's best-seller "The Boys in the Boat" in that in both cases the authors were able to present a extended, captivating account of something (rowing and ballet, respectively) that I initially imagined would quickly become tiresome, but which ultimately proved to be captivating due to the talent of the authors. Take a chance on this book, I doubt you'll regret it.

Narrow Girls on a Blue Profound Stage has a rare atmosphere about it, a dreamy one that seems to both exist in the past it describes while also looking back at it with a quiet clarity. According to the author blurb the book is based on her own childhood journals, and that can 100% be felt in the loose, almost vignette-like plot structure and the strength and aching immediacy of the emotions conveyed here. The book dives deeply into one young woman's microcosm of the ballet world, but it also touches on a host of things you don't need to love ballet to understand and empathize with on a 'profound' level: first love, belonging, independence, vulnerability, and those struggles with identity when you barely know what of your self to label, much less what those labels might (or might not) be. This was one of the most unique and deeply personal books I've read in a long time.

I'm inspired by the author's raw reveal of the potent and poignant moments that made her... and reminded of the moments that make me. We are all on our way. Her recounting of a love affair that took years to toast and kindle... that the affair grew from her teenagehood at a time when she should have been protected but did indeed fall in love. I want to jump in and protect her little 15yo self from the very adult world of a ballet company - yet I also want to see her dance. I actually googled ballerina feet after she commented about the pride of her tortured toes and jacked up toe-knuckles. (gag me please, b/c I have a foot fetish). It was a lot, but dang, how she yields just a few words to evoke so much pain and tenderness (physical and emotional) in a ballet company ... I loved it.

Narrow Girls is one of the rare books able to communicate to an outsider the passion in an interest truly held by only a few, and to bring about the wonderful feeling of perspective you get when a piece of art reminds you just how much life is going on around you all the time in all the places you never thought to look. Narrow Girls reminded me how big the world is, and I consider that one of the greatest gifts that literature, particularly nonfiction, can provide.

Lisa Sellge shares of herself in this intense and emotional book. "Narrow Girls on a Profound Blue Stage" was captivating and kept me turning the pages one after another until I had read the entire book in one sitting. The prose is beautiful and the subject matter intense. Ballet provides the background to this passionate coming-of-age story with deep connections. If you've ever felt deeply, ever connected to another human in a profound way, this book will resonate with you. I can't wait for her next book!

Forbidden Love. Coming-of-Age. Passion. This masterful memoir broke my heart as the author so lyrically took us on her painful journey exploring her sexuality as a 15-year-old ballerina trying to grow up. Her voice was authentic and raw, vulnerable and naive. We all have stories in our past that have defined us. Not many have the courage to tell their stories, but author Lisa Sellge captured my heart with this searing memoir. I can't wait to read her next book.

Narrow Girls on a Blue Profound Stage is a coming-of-age story that highlights a young ballerina’s first forbidden love within the insular world of a youth ballet company. Author Lisa Sellge beautifully captures the innocence and vulnerability of a girl who, like many teens, is impatient and eager to grow up and strains against her parents, particularly her mother, who worries, but does not know how much her influence is slipping away. Young Annaliese is too naïve to sort out her confused feelings or to truly understand her moral dilemma, but thankfully some of the adult characters within her dance world recognize the danger and try to protect her.

The best books ignite my empathy and make me think about situations I have not experienced. When I finished reading Narrow Girls on a Blue Profound Stage, I ached for Annaliese and considered it a sacred honor to hold her secrets in my heart.

Lisa Sellge's "Narrow Girls on a Blue Profound Stage" begins with 15 yr old Annaliese in a dance community of worldly twenty-somethings. She can't wait to grow up. I like the inner workings of the girl's mind and heart, her experiences and her personal growth. There is a bit of moral dilemma in this story which I won't spoil the reader's experience with. Well written and evocative.
