Engineering Management for the Rest of Us Paperback – November 1, 2022
Purchase options and add-ons
A lot of Engineering Managers and leaders studied for years and years to become the best Engineer they possibly could be... and then they were promoted.
It can be very tough for those of us who didn't go into Engineering with the distinct concept that we would become managers, but still want to do our best to support our teams.
I wrote this book because there's so much no one told me about management that I wished I would have known. There's a lot to be purposeful about that many of us learn on the job, and worse: learn on people. This book provides some organization for collaborating with networks of people, working together towards a common purpose.
There seem to be millions of articles and "how to"s on programming and only a handful of resources on Engineering Management- why? It's very tough to talk about something that involves people processes. People are non-deterministic. Working relationships are nuanced, communication is linked with individual values, motivations, power dynamics, and skills. People also have a range of experiences and emotions that are not consistent day-to-day.
Hopefully, in the happiest, most productive sense.
It's imperative that we as managers learn as much as we can and work on ourselves, so that our teams may enjoy a healthy working life and strong relationships. It's not just important, it's crucial that we iterate on our own skills as managers so that we can properly support everyone around us: individuals, peers, leadership, and the business.
I'm sharing what I've learned- not so that you follow my concepts exactly, but rather so that you can be thoughtful about your own leadership and needs. The book goes from the macro to the micro- with topics ranging everywhere from "feedback" to "scoping down PRs".
Though the book is meant to address people in management, individual contributors are welcome to read the book as well- perhaps you need to manage up and need some tools to help guide the conversation, perhaps you just want a peek at other concerns within the business- everyone is invited to the conversation.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 17, 2024WTF? I KNOW I wrote a review of this book when it first came out -- I know that because the headline autopopulated itself in the field just now, but for some reason my review isn't showing up on the site. What on earth, Amazon? 😆
This is the best engineering management book on the market. Period. Most management books focus on the toolkit, like having 1x1s, doing performance reviews, and resolving conflicts. Which has some value, but does not really get to the meat and the heart of what motivates people. Sarah's book starts with first principles -- what are your personal values? what are the values of the people you lead? and why does that matter? -- and you can tell it's excellent because I did not roll my eyes once. (I have a kneejerk aversion to corporate valuespeak.)
The other thing I love about Sarah's writing is that she comes at the craft of management from a deep understanding of sociotechnical systems. You can't be an effective engineering leader without first being an effective engineer, and while many attempts have been made to silo off "technical leadership" from "people management" and place them in different people, I have never seen it work very well. Effective teams typically have different people responsible for technical vs organizational *outcomes*, but the work itself is indivisibly entwined.
Sarah is a phenomenal success in her field, but her writing comes across as surprisingly humble and accessible. Management books that try to be prescriptive generally end up sounding quite shallow. The wisest leaders tend to lead by sharing stories and experiences of their own, without pretending to solve everybody's problems. I learned a lot from Sarah's book, and I end up recommending it to someone new almost every week.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 1, 2022This book is going on my must-read list for engineering managers. There are so many super useful things packed into it.
First, it's loaded with immediately applicable steps that engineering managers can take today to improve their approach to management and create more productive, happier, healthier teams.
Second, there are so many nuggets of wisdom in here that will help EMs adjust their framing for what management is and how to approach it.
I've been lucky enough to report to Sarah in my career, and I've seen her live the values and strategies she writes about. I've never seen a leader create so much trust and loyalty in a team. Sarah creates productivity and collaboration in spaces where most of us would have immediately thrown up our hands and called it impossible. She has deep expertise in engineering, leadership, psychology, and so many other areas, and it all comes together to produce unbelievable results.
And she's written all of it down. I've been in tech leadership for a bit, and I can trace so many of my successes back to lessons I learned by studying Sarah's approach. Reading this book is a clear, approachable collection of everything Sarah has been teaching managers like me for years, and now anyone can get that coaching without having to be lucky enough to join one of Sarah's teams. This is foundational material for a successful engineering management career.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 1, 2022As a software engineer who has taken on management roles and worked under various leadership styles, this is the book I wish that my managers had read and that I had early on in my career.
Regardless of whether you ever choose to become a manager, every software engineer will encounter a situation where they will have to practice the skills of management. Whether you're managing a project, leading a team temporarily, or managing up, an engineer's management skills can be critical to their success.
Many books I've read on this topic often contain many ideas that sound great in theory, but often aren't grounded in real-world situations and are outdated. However, this book contains so much practical knowledge and applicable techniques that is based on her own career and experience having overseen many different projects and teams. I am absolutely blown away by how much is in here.
Finally, to quote Sarah, "The first part of building healthy teams is admitting you won't know everything." Once you've taken that first step and committed to reading this book, be assured you are in knowledgeable hands and that this book will be well worth your time and effort.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 1, 2022First let me preface this review by saying I am a massive fan of Sarah’s work. I’ve followed her for many years now and when she publishes work, you bet it’s top tier.
I’m starting my new role at Spotify as an engineering manager next Monday and Engineering Management For The Rest Of Us has been invaluable to me.
I’ve read many management, communication, and leadership books over the past few months. The tech focused ones were dry and didn’t resonate with me. And the general management and leadership books weren’t relevant enough to my role.
Sarah has perfectly crafted the solution to my management book identity crisis!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read, very balanced view
I really appreciated the book, it was a great read and refresher. I especially enjoyed the parts around self care, as it’s so easy to forget and prioritize the team only. Had not read too much literature that focused a lot on the manager’s productivity and well-being. Chapters are short, which is ideal for reading between focus sessions or meetings.
Overall, recommended read.

The author's clear and concise writing makes the reading experience enjoyable, while the content is both relevant and insightful. This book has enriched my knowledge and given me new ideas to improve my management skills.
In summary, this book is an excellent resource for software engineering managers seeking to expand their knowledge and enhance their skills. Highly recommended for those looking to stay ahead in the ever-evolving world of software engineering.
