Customers are satisfied with the camera lens' image quality, sharpness, and build quality. They mention it takes nice shots, reliably sharp handheld photos at 1/125s, or even sharp shots at 1/30s when selected from a burst. The OIS is excellent, especially at 400mm and they prefer it to the built-in. Many find it useful for shooting sharp pictures of insects up to one half life size. However, there are mixed opinions on zoom capability, weight, compactness, and focus speed.

Customers like the camera lens' image quality. They mention it takes sharp handheld photos at 1/125s or even sharp shots at total eclipse times. The dual IS system allows for reliably sharp handheld photos at a low shutter speed, making it great for taking sharp pictures of insects up to half life size. The lens has good resolution, the zoom is great, and images are very good at lower zoom levels. It also has excellent contrast, making it great for wildlife and bird photos.

However, others mention issues with jerkiness, a tight zoom barrel, and problems with rapid zooming due to the zoom ring not being smooth.

However, others say it's difficult to achieve good focus on fast-moving subjects with a low hit rate. The lens is not considered fast at the 400mm length, and images at the long end of the focal range don't seem to be tack sharp.

Sharp lens in a compact size. Focus is challenging at long focal lengths.

Sharp lens in a compact size. Focus is challenging at long focal lengths.
I'm not a "Pro" photographer but I have been obsessed with using and learning about cameras in the past few years. I have used the 35-100mm f2.8 lens consistently as it's been the most versatile lens in my bag for outdoor photography. Pleasingly sharp to my eyes. I'd recently gotten into taking action shots at my nieces games with the 35-100 and loved the results. I've found it very difficult to judge long zoom lenses because they have much shallower depth of field than shorter/wide angle lenses. DOF becomes very shallow once you go beyond 100mm and EXTREMELY shallow at 400mm. If your shooting a distant subject and cropping in a lot, then DOF is big enough to not be an issue. However cropping heavily will kill your image quality. Filling the frame with 400mm AND getting your subject in focus can be very challenging to the point of frustration. This is where I struggle to decide how much of my difficulties with getting really sharp/in focus photos with this lens is because of the very shallow depth of field or the lens itself not being sharp enough to justify the price tag. To be honest after extensive use I think it falls somewhere in between. I've shot some subjects from close range in pretty good outdoor lighting and had many shots slightly out-of-focus and kept the sharpest in focus pictures I could get. My best shots at 100mm seemed slightly sharper than the 400mm shots.. but again the Depth Of Field is also much shallower and more difficult to achieve good focus. The lens has Optical Stabilization built-in which is nice and also has a 5mm-Infiniti switch on the lens which helps with focusing faster on distant subjects. Overall I like the lens a lot and think it can take great sharp images with practice and experience. Even though there is not much to compare it to in the Micro 4/3rds long zoom arena.I have provided a bunch of previously RAW unedited photos converted straight to the highest quality JPEG I could of several animals that I took at a recent trip in Custer State Park, South Dakota to allow other viewers to be the judge. Most of the images were shot at pretty close range (around 10 feet away for 100mm shots and 20 feet for 400mm shots). The First is of a donkey at the shortest telephoto focal length of 100mm @F8 ISO400. The Second one is a Buffalo 400mm@F8 ISO400. A Third one is a Deer 350mm@F5.9 ISO800. The Fourth Photo is of a bird on a bridge that I shot at 400mm at only about 10 feet away. You can see how razor thin the DOF is at 400mm when you get near it's minimum focusing distance. In my opinion the shots are sharp but not razor sharp and I shot several photos with several attempts to get each of the subjects in focus in AFS(Automatic Focus Single) and CAF (Constant Auto Focus). I selected the sharpest of each of the photos that I attempted. Unfortunately all photos are heavily compressed and lower resolution after being posted on the internet. So keep that in mind.Pros:Very long and useful focal range of 100mm-400mmWeather sealed and nearly all-metal constructionAmazingly small and relatively light (2.1 Pounds) for such a range of zoomImages appear to be as sharp as my 35-100mm f2.8 at 100mm to around 300mmAuto-focus tracking seems to be pretty solid on still or slow moving subjectsCons:Zoom range from around 300mm to 400mm is pretty stiff and jerkyDue to the physics of long focal lengths getting sharp in focus images can be difficult at close rangeNailing focus on fast moving subjects is difficult with a low hit rate in my experience (May be due to camera/sensor more then the lens itself)Images at long end of the focal range don't seem to be tack sharp (could be due to focal length and missed focus)

I had been skeptical of the hype around this lens but I have to admit that the Panasonic Leica 100-400, is a fantastic buy. The photos that I have included are some of my early test shots at the local zoo. This lens will get used a lot.

      Best features:
      1. Small size. Anything close in angle of view for APS-C or Full Frame would be 2 to 3 times bigger and heavier. I am more likely to take this with me.
      2. Sharpness. This is as good if not better than any Nikon lens I have used and it is sharp at all focal lengths. Excellent contrast, too.
      3. The image stabilization of the lens/camera combination is nothing short of amazing. Handheld shots taken at 1/200 sec. that you can pixel peep are beyond belief.

My only concerns so far are:

      1. The supposedly weak lens mount so I am being sure to hold it at the mid point at the tripod collar. I remove the extra tripod foot when hand-holding.
      2. It is not a fast lens at the 400mm length. Even at ISO 800 with the dual stabilization (which really works well), you are pushing the limits of handheld photography. ISO 1200 or higher is required with anything other than bright daylight or if the subject is moving.
      3. Learning the correct autofocus settings is still a challenge. In most situations, it is fast and accurate. I have a G85 with all the firmware updates but it is still tricky to find the subject if it is a small portion of the image. I might need to use the manual/auto focus combination setting just to get it started in the correct range or play with the focus area settings.

Amazing glass in this lens. I use it solely for birding on a Lumix g9 body and have been extremely pleased. It is fast and not bad even in low light (great on a tripod or monopod). It can be a little less sharp on the 400mm end but if you use a monopod the images are still very good. It’s a trade off for the extra reach, which I find I always need. In lens image stabilation is excellent and even though the lens is heavy it is very comfortable to hand-hold (and I am admittedly on the weak side).

My only complaint before I realized I had the lens on lock was the tight zoom barrel. I read online that I needed to make sure the lens was not on lock and I swore up and down that mine wasnt, until I realized it was. So double-check that. Now that I have the lens unlocked I have no complaints about the zoom ring.

      Excellent birding lens

Amazing glass in this lens. I use it solely for birding on a Lumix g9 body and have been extremely pleased. It is fast and not bad even in low light (great on a tripod or monopod). It can be a little less sharp on the 400mm end but if you use a monopod the images are still very good. It’s a trade off for the extra reach, which I find I always need. Unparalleled reach, very good autofocus speed, I use on Olympus EM1 and have found it great to take wildlife and bird photos. Quite compact, quite heavy for its size. Barrel lock is effective. Perhaps not as sharp as M Zuiko 40-150 2.8 at 300mm equivalent, but from there on out I can simply take shots I never could, and print without excessive cropping and loss of sharpness. Good color rendition. There can be a blue cast to images simply because of the distance between you and the subject: for instance, shooting today from Berkeley across San Francisco bay at 800 mm equivalent, I could not get both towers of the Golden Gate bridge in the picture. And, I should add, this is a very easy lens to hand hold, at these ridiculous focal lengths. Images really are sharp at 800 mm thanks to Olympus camera stabilization combined with Panasonic lens stabilization.T There is some looseness in fit at the camera mount, but not interfere with operation at all.

I was concerned with this purchase as the early indications from photog review sites showed the lens was not sharp. Panasonic & Leica seemed to recognize this and held up release of the lens to make appropriate adjustments. Knowing this & seeing a late "and very positive" review after it was finally released I took a chance and ordered it once it became available.

Thank goodness I did that because this is a wonderful addition to our lens collection! Its a beautiful lens and works flawlessly but all that wont matter for me if its not sharp. Trust me this lens is VERY sharp and the colors are gorgeous!

The thing I see about this lens is it needs to be worked to its strengths. Its obviously not the fastest lens in the world especially at the long end so you need to have good light in order to get the best results out of it. If I have poor, dim, overcast condition light I'm going to use my Olympus 40-150mm F2.8 Pro or 300mm F4.0 Pro lenses because they are a lot faster "although without the range on one or the zoom on the other". If I have good light this is the lens I will have mounted because its so versatile with that huge zoom range and is fully capable of producing stunning results!

Lense works great. Definitely NOT as stable as the reviews and videos online make it out to be but none the less I've taken some good pictures with the lenses. It's unusable without a tripod or slider for video.

This lens if very well built. All is metal. It is not a light lens, but considering its reach: 200 to 800mm (eqviv to 35mm) it is also not so heavy. The focus of this lens is very still and not smooth. Even over time. It should be weather sealed but I can clearly see dust inside the lens that probably gather over time.
My biggest problem with this lens is its image quality. I am using it on the GH6 which should have decent focusing mechanism, so I think the focus is not the blame. I simply cannot take even one single image with a decent quality when shooting at 400mm. The image seems to be always blurry in a way. Sometimes more and sometimes less, but it is always annoyingly blurry. I think the problem mainly happens when shooting on 400mm and the subject of the image takes about 25 to 40 percent of the image. Getting closer to the subject makes this problem go away. I tried F8, F9, F11. I tried with or without stabilization. I am shooting always above 1/640 when on 400mm. Not sure why a lens that costs so much is working so poorly in these conditions.

This lens is amazing. Lightweight and compact for a 100-400 mm with a very practical design IMO. Outstanding image quality in terms of clarity/contrast/sharpness with, quiet but snappy focus (only hunts for focus in low light). Chromatic aberration is fairly well controlled for a super telephoto only becoming noticeable in extreme situations like shooting a blackbird against a bright sky. I found no issues with and really like the zoom lock feature and the easy to remove tripod foot. as well as the innovative way I can go from horizontal to vertical frame when attached to a monopod or a tripod. It's not an inexpensive lens but it does offer excellent quality and functionality! I'm quite pleased and think the investment is worth it!

This is a great lens, very sharp and light weight,. With the 400mm together with my Panasonic G9 camera I effectively get 800mm of zoom for my wildlife photography. It's excellent for bird photographs including birds in flight. The inbuilt image stabilization works very well so I'm able to get great quality photographs even when I use a slower shutter speed for lower light conditions.

Excellent optics, smooth action, excellent product. It is however high in price and fairly heavy compared to other lenses I have for my Lumix G9. However it is very compact and quite light weight compared to lenses for other types of cameras at 2 x 400mm. Delivery was spot on.
