CAN WE LEAN INTO THE ISSUES AND LOVE WELL?
How should disciples of Jesus navigate a society clawing itself apart through politics? Should we disengage? Pick a side? Offer slogans which sound nice but express little? Insist that true Christians vote in such-and-such a way? Pursue tranquility by making contentious topics off-limits for church?
Following Jesus in a Politically Divided World suggests that disciples of Jesus navigate a politically divided world . . . by being disciples of Jesus. Jesus models the character and provides the tools we need to live as perceptive and peaceable in volatile times. Whittaker and McCoy invite you to answer 21 questions, including:
- What is the purpose of government?
- Do you know the times you’re living in?
- What hills are worth dying on?
- How do you pray for your nation?
- How do you figure out what’s right and wrong as a Christian?
- What does Christianity teach about the bedroom, womb, deathbed, environment, and battlefield?
Together, let’s face stormy horizons the way Jesus showed us: fully awake, yet filled with peace.
As someone entrusted with overseeing a local congregation, I would be thrilled to see this resource in the hands of my members.

I’m encouraged to have this resource to help guide me and those I disciple in this politically charged culture.
—Michelle Eagle, Discipleship and Women’s Minister, Harpeth Christian Church
There are plenty of voices in our culture telling us what to think. Instead, Daniel and John usher readers to many of the ethical crossroads of our day, offering a framework so that we may personally build biblical convictions as disciples of Jesus.
—Jason Ishmael, Lead Pastor, Antioch Christian Church

- Reviewed in the United States on November 16, 2024The book did a good job of adding Scriptural references to follow, with the encouragement to read the Scripture, study, and make up your own mind.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 27, 2024As a pastor in the post-Christian Northeast, who planted a church filled with first-generation Christinas, it’s been hard to find many resources to disciple our people in the political arena in a way that is biblical, not partisan. This book was so helpful! I read it while preparing to preach a 4-Week Sermon Series on politics, quoted it in the series, and told everyone in our church they should buy a copy!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 3, 2024As the church becomes increasingly discipled by competing political interests, the worship of the donkey and elephant has distracted many Christians from worshipping the Lamb. We need guidance on how to walk by faith in such anxious seasons. John Whittaker and Daniel McCoy have written a book that is thoughtful and accessible. Rather than persuading us to participate in a particular way, they help us to ask better questions about how to critically engage political topics and how to faithfully interact with government interests. This book is carefully researched, fair, and timely. If you only take one book into the ballot box with you this year, take the Bible. But if you take two, include this one.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 31, 2024Following Jesus in a Politically Divided World is a timely resource to help believers think and behave Christianly when it comes to politics. Each short chapter includes practical, biblical steps for considering the polarizing issues of our day through a Jesus lens. With an abundance of biblical references and relevant examples from history, this is a perfect book for small group and classroom discussions. At a time when consequential issues are tearing us apart, the authors offer a process for reflection and engagement with Scripture to bridge our political divides while remaining faithful to the gospel and the mission of the church.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 2, 2024This short read offers a fantastic and practical guide that will help you navigate some of the difficult challenges we Christians face when engaging politics. Not only do the authors tackle some difficult questions; they provide the reader with a framework for discovering their own answers to those difficult questions. I recommend this book to anyone who is willing to think outside of the box and make the effort to discover what following Jesus looks like in every aspect of life, even the voting booth.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 31, 2024So grateful for this book. John and Daniel succeeded in bringing this hot button topic to us in a way that engages the current political climate through the biblical lens of truth. We are encouraged to engage in politics to bring the kingship of Jesus to the world while describing the realistic expectations that believers should have in a fallen world. I’m encouraged to have this resource to help guide me and those I disciple in this politically charged culture.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 2, 2024Are you an American who happens to be a Christian, or a Christian who happens to live in America?” Daniel and John equip Christians to translate our confession into practical action within our unique social and political context. As someone entrusted with overseeing a local congregation, I would be thrilled to see this resource in the hands of my members.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 5, 2024If we don't disciple the minds of people with scripture, our culture will disciple their minds with political ideology. I recommend this book for those who are trying to help their churches with resources on the election.
