- Reviewed in the United States on July 16, 2019I grew up in Vestal next to Endicott NY my mother would drive us down to main street where she would go into Elk's Bakery to buy breads for diner. The elderly woman behind the glass counters were always very friendly and my brother and I would always get for free the sprinkled square cookies. My fathers favorites were the apple turnovers. Oh I wish I could go back in time and revisit that wonderful bakery.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 9, 2020From a bakery I adored as a child, I got both recipe books to make sure I had the Russian Rock cookie recipe. (my fav) But there are so many things I adored growing up and now I get to share them with my kids/grandkids.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 6, 2013Any baker who wants easy to follow and authentic German recipes should purchase this book. The book brought back fond memories of Elk's Bake Shop and the smiling people behind the counter. The baked goods would be packaged in white paper boxes tied with string. Hard work and excellence was the hallmark of the Illg family. If you have a German bake shop in your personal history even if not in Endicott NY please treat yourself to this book. The smells and tastes will flood back.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 8, 2020I loved this book. And, the package arrived unscathed and in great conditions.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 8, 2014I lived in Endicott for about 12 years, and loved getting goodies from Elks. I've had the cookbook for a week now, and have already made 7 of the recipes. She has done a wonderful job of converting the recipes to household use while keeping the bakery quality.
