The Vampire and the Case of the Wayward Werewolf (The Portlock Paranormal Detective Series Book 1) Kindle Edition
I have an eidetic memory and a can-do attitude. I can-do anything to get away from the vampire king. So when the Sheriff of Portlock, a hidden paranormal town, invites me to be his assistant, I say sure thing. It beats servitude hands down.
At first things seem ideal in Portlock, I make a new friend and even get asked out on a date. But the truth is, there are secrets aplenty. The paranormal council are at each other’s throats, figuratively of course. But then someone rips out a werewolf’s throat, literally this time.
I need to work with the Sheriff to find the killer, before he strikes again. We just need to winnow through werewolf pack issues, council politics, and more suspects than you can shake a stake at. Simple.
Portlock is a melting pot of witches, necromancers, vampires and shifters, but things are starting to boil over. I hope I don’t get burnt.
Dive into this fast-paced urban fantasy series if you love mystery, humour, found family and a slow-burn romance.

About the authors
Heather is an urban fantasy writer and mum. She was born and raised near Windsor, which gave her the misguided impression that she was close to royalty in some way. She is not, though she once got a letter from Queen Elizabeth's lady-in-waiting.
Heather went to university in Liverpool, where she took up skydiving and met her future husband. When she’s not running around after her children, she’s plotting her next book and daydreaming about vampires, dragons and kick-ass heroines.
Heather loves to travel and once spent a month in Thailand. Thai food remains a firm family favourite. It goes without saying that Heather is a book lover. She grew up reading the likes of Brian Jacques and Anne McCaffrey.
Charles de Lint said this about Heather, and it has made her week, month and year!
"Heather Harris is hands down one of my favourite writers. I love everything about her books and am just a little bit jealous of anyone who gets to read her for the first time." - Charles de Lint, best-selling author of the Newford Series (writing for Fantasy and Science Fiction magazine).
Jilleen Dolbeare writes urban fantasy and paranormal women’s fiction. She loves stories with strong women, adventure, and humor, with a side helping of myth and folklore.
While living in the Arctic, she learned to keep her stakes sharp for the 67 days of night. She talks to the ravens that follow her when she takes long walks with her cats in their stroller, and she’s learned how to keep the wolves at bay.
Jilleen lives with her husband and two hungry cats in Alaska where she also discovered her love and admiration of the Alaska Native peoples and their folklore.

Bunny has fled her home country of England to come and live in Alaska, a little town called Portlock, a town that is occupied by supernaturals of all sorts, vampires, mermaids, witches, druids, necromances, and shifters, including werewolves, but also those that can shift into other animals such as bears or foxes. There are a few humans living in the town as well. This is a mostly, happy, little blend of supernaturals all living together without having to worry about being seen by humans.
Bunny has been hired as an assistant to the local Sheriff, Nomo Gunnar Johansen. Initially Bunny assumes that she will just be working at the station, helping with phones and paperwork.
However, the Nomo has other plans for Bunny, given her eidetic memory, and her abilities as a Vampire. The town is an interesting mix of paranormal personalities, sometimes close to the boiling point, but often held at bay by the Sheriff’s office. For example, there is the drunken shifter who when he has a bit too much to drink, can get a bit out of control. There is the Fox Shifter, who likes to run amok in his neighbour’s yard, just to antagonise her, and she likes to try and shoot him. Just the odd minor disturbance. There is a council that represents all of the different beings in the town, but they spend more time trying to
Bunny is doing pretty well with things, getting to learn her job, and getting on well with both the Nomo and other person that works at the Sheriffs office, Sidnee, the mermaid, becoming fast friends with her. That is until one of the werewolves is brutally murdered.
With a long list of possible suspects, and a town that is always simmering close to the edge, Bunny and her new Boss find themselves having to face the multiple challenges of supernatural politics in a race before the killer can strike again.
This is a fast-paced Urban Fantasy mystery thriller, with a lot of humour, action, and some romance. The world building is outstanding as the town of Portlock and its inhabitants are brought to life with such beautiful detail, that you feel like you are walking the streets with Bunny and her loyal dog Fluffy. There is a stunning array of paranormal beings in this world, with each following a lot of the normal conventions we have come to understand, but some with a few tweaks for the Portlock universe, giving it a unique flavour.
The really captivating aspect of this story though is the character work. We get to see the story through Bunny’s eyes, new to the supernatural world, and still trying to find her way as a newborn Vampire as well. On top of this, she is also trying to learn a new role as the assistant to the new Sheriff, who is more interested in a new ‘Deputy’ than an office assistant. With Bunny’s eidetic memory, she is able to recall anything though, and this makes for a clever way to recall events that have occurred in the story, especially when Bunny needs to remember a crime scene, or a particular incident. She has a wicked, sarcastic sense of humour that also adds a lot of fun to the story, breaking up moments in the story that can be particularly brutal. There is a slew of other exceptional characters in this book as well, from the Nomo, Bunny’s new Boss, to Sidnee, the other assistant in the office, who fast becomes her new friend. Then there is the leader of the Vampires, the incredibly hot and brooding Connor MacKenzie, who seems to have a bit of an issue with Bunny. There are multiple other characters as well, but I don’t want to give spoilers, but they are all brilliant.
This is one of those books that hooks you from the moment you pick it up, to the moment you realise you have finished it, and you are looking for the next in the series. If you love Urban Fantasy, exceptional character writing, and just a fun story, then this is an absolute must read!!
Bunny, as Elizabeth is preferred to be known as, decides to heck with that. She finds out there are supernatural towns, like free reservations, that she can reside in as a free resident. That's how Bunny Barrington ends up in Portlock, Alaska, a town who’s hours open at 4pm and run until 4am.
Bunny works as an assistant to Gunnar Johansen, the Nomo, their de facto chief of police. And Portlock needs all the help it can get. A rash of murders, and missing people, under strange circumstances has the residents shaken. Gunnar puts Bunny right to work.
While Bunny gets used to life as a Vampire, Gunnar, observing her keen questioning skills and her fabulous memory, takes her with him on his investigations. Before she knows it, Bunny is confronting flying werewolves, moonshiners and angry witches.
Over the course of her information gathering, Bunny hits some raw nerves. Her rescue dog, Fluffy, a German Shepard, goes with her and adds his sensitive nose to help. But Bunny’s house is bombed by a Molotov cocktail, she's almost poisoned and then shot in the line of duty. Will Bunny survive her immortality?
The Vampire and the Case of the Wayward Werewolf is a hysterically funny, bone-chillingly scary and thoroughly satisfying fantasy read with a little English lilt to it. Jilleen Dolbeare and Heather Harris make a delightful writing team. I can't wait for the next one in the series.
Bunny comes off as a bit of a dingbat at several points in the book and I just want to say “come on!” There’s a lot of mystery surrounding all the major players we meet here. There are two storylines going on here. One is contained to this book and the other is clearly continued on to the next book.
The book is an easy read and kept me fully engaged. I am looking forward to moving on the second book in the series.
The character development is good. The world building insofar as the place is concerned was well developed.
The reason I gave it 5 is because it was a solid story. There was a steady build of the plot and it moved along well. I didn't find myself bored and none of it, well until you get you the end, was beyond the realm of possibility. I think the only thing that really disappointed me was that everything was very predictable. And a spoiler not spoiler alert is you knew the first time she mentions the heat inside her that that would be the big finish. Still, this just wasn't enough for me to mark down because honestly it's a well developed story with great characters.
Thanks again, and happy reading.
