Searching for Family and Traditions at the French Table: Champagne, Alsace, Lorraine, and Paris Regions (The Savoring the Olde Ways, Book One) Audible Audiobook – Unabridged

3.9 out of 5 stars 86 ratings

Part culinary memoir and part travelogue, Carole Bumpus gathered this compilation of intimate interviews, conversations, stories, and traditional family recipes (cuisine pauvre) in the kitchens of French families as she traveled throughout the countryside. Travel with her through Champagne caves/wineries and historic cathedrals, local farmers’ markets, ancient potters’ guilds, and restaurant kitchens with wood-fire ovens.

Learn how to make homemade Spinach-stuffed Tortellini with Bolognaise Sauce from the Champagne region, Crêpes and Watercress-stuffed Ravioli from the Lorraine, and Baekeofe and Kugelhopf from the Alsace. “Go blind” from the family stock of Eau de Vie liqueur, and be treated to tales of foraging for snails for the infamous and now extinct Escargots Festival. And, on a somber note, listen to accounts of families forced from their communities during the German occupation of WWII in the Alsace and Lorraine, only to continue to struggle for survival after finally making their way home.

This book is a compilation of stories about making ends meet; about people being grateful for all they had, even when they had almost nothing; about the sharing of family jokes and laughter; and about family trials and triumphs. This book is about people savoring the life they have been given.

The storytelling is captivating and arresting in this book. I looked at this part of the Old World in new ways, in part because the tales of very real people are all throughout this book. It has the passion and the rich feel that's supported by culinary details. I felt as if I were sitting inside the kitchens and at the dinner tables of the cooks and hosts the author sought out to tell the story of this part of France.

The passion to pursue a full menu of details — places, people, the colors of shutters on houses being the only elements that would distinguish one house from another — rings through in the writing. It's more than learning that mustard is an ingredient used to season a rabbit dish. It's learning about Maggi, a liquid flavoring used in knepfle, a type of pasta.

It's a next-level tour of France, too, because the food of a region tells us so much about the people. This volume includes the Alsace, where my family came from -- a part of France that's so close to Germany the differences might seem to blend. The book makes it as clear as an item on a menu. "The Alsace was annexed many times by Germany, but the Lorraine was infiltrated by the Germans but never considered to be anything but French." I also felt like I was closer to my family after I read this book. It's inspiring me to tell my own family's story, in part because the rich details are everywhere on the pages.

Then there's the deft move of including complete directions on how to attempt the dishes. A good cook could make this book their own by trying the recipes. It's easy to imagine the book having a place on a cookbook shelf. What more could a gourmand and Francophile want? A winner in many ways.

I thoroughly enjoyed Carole's clever method of using inquiries of personal memories of food and feted to reveal the regional history and personal perspectives of this small quadrant of La France. Having visited these regions, I feel quite fortunate for the insights revealed by Josiane's indigens. We'll done and we'll worth my time and energy. I know when I'm enjoying a good read when I can't stop relaying all of the vignettes to my wife in our evening walks--and I didn't stop talking for an hour and a half straight tonight!

Having European relatives who lived through WWII, I enjoyed this read, but I found some of the editing mistakes irritating. (Is it Corrine or Corinne? It's shown both ways. She uses words like "smirk" and "sniveling" as though they are not pejorative. "Acknowledgment" should be spelled the American, not British, way. Recipes don't look like they have been tested and can be confusing. She shows unfortunate naivete about wartime history. But I envy her opportunity for such a culinary road trip.

We recently went on a river cruise down the Seine with Carole and her husband ...they were wonderful! Her books are filled with wonderful stories, history and of course, fabulous recipes!

I was disappointed in this book. There was very little information about the traditions and foods of the region. More time was spent on the driving to places and people's facial expressions, which didn't add anything to the book. This was a missed opportunity to give the reader some insight into this area.

Who doesn’t love France especially the country and the castles. In high school (US) my favorite subject was European history so it was fun to read this book and hear the stories of the families that lived thru the wars. Of course I love the kitchens and the cooking . I lived in Germany near the Lux/Belgium border so close enough to spend time in this part of France. I had my car so i was able to drive thru the beautiful country but unlike Carole I didn’t get to visit with the French or eat home cooked meals. So—what are my favorites—CHEESE, mushrooms and Chocolate croissant. Crazy huh. So interesting reading this book and want to read about other areas of France that I didn’t get to spend time in. Thanks Carole
