I am very pleased with this Bible. There are good reviews that address the features I appreciate. The decent thickness of and cream color of the pages, the overall size of the Bible and it's pages, the single column text with nice size print (called large print, but really just not micro print like so many smaller and thinner Bibles), adequate lined space for note journaling, etc.

The one thing I haven't seen clearly addressed or answered is the issues some have had with the color of the leather, being natural unconditioned, and much paler than the image. This is a leather product, and should be conditioned by the user to their desired result. Think of it as you would a leather saddle or tack, or other such natural leather product.

I found the cover to be lighter in color and rather dry and not supple. So I fixed it. Leather will over time and with use absorb oils from your skin, and with smaller items like a wallet, this may be adequate to keep conditioned. I did some research on leather conditioning and found a variety of forums which discussed. Many suggested simply olive oil, others promoted commercial leather conditioner products, other oils and conditioners include jojoba oil, beeswax, avacado oil, etc. What I ended up using was Dr. Bronners Organic Baby Balm. It is a balm made to nourish and protect skin (that's what leather is). I took it easy with each application, taking a little dab and spreading over fingers and then applied to surface of Bible, rubbing in to get into the crevices of leather. I allowed awhile to absorb between applications, and went light with each treatment. After about three sessions of this, the leather color is darker, similar to photo of item, and leather is much softer, supple and not dry feeling.

I'm a wide margin Bible fan. This is my third one. The combo of the single column and two inch margin is quite nice. My two previous wide margin Bibles were double column which made writing in the inner margin difficult. The single column layout on this is superior. And the font is a nice size. At first, I was concerned about the flap and wondered if it would be a problem. It does take some getting used to. It actually provides an feature I had not considered - it gives a perfect place to carry a pen. It does come with a pen holder sewn into the leather, but the placement is very close to the pages. However, it is easy to hang the pen on the inside flap allowing one to carry the Bible to meetings and still have access to taking notes. I didn't expect this but find it helpful. The flap is flexible and can be bent backwards and placed under the Bible when it is opened to take up less desk space. I do like the cream color of the pages and their weight is sufficient to discourage bleed through, not perfect, but usable. The other notable thing is how flat it opens. This makes it usable from day one. The only negative I have found is the stiffness of the Bible. My other wide margins are soft leather and are bendable as a result. This one is not . . . its more like a book that's covered in thick leather. Its too early to tell how this will wear but it seems to be made to last. The cord is an interesting feature. The upside is it keeps your Bible closed offering better protection if you travel with it. The down side is when you are using the Bible the cord seems really long dangling off your desk. Of course, one can remove the cord if desired.

The combo of the cord and the flap make it a little quirky, like one is opening up a scroll as you begin to study, but that's not a bad thing in a Bible. It's somewhat of a tactile experience to purposefully open it up for study. And the flap and cord do help provide protection for the pages and a nice place to carry a pen. But for me, the layout and the way it lays flat make it worth it. I look forward to using it for many years.

I ordered 3 all from different vendors in hopes of one of the original full grain leathers showing up and sadly they were all the same new compressed leather. So, I gave in to the compressed leather by carefully and gently sanding it with a mid grit sand paper to make it look less plasticky and more textured and then I rubbed in Renapur leather shoe balsam. I love it more now, though I still wish I would’ve gotten one while they were using the textured full grain leather.

I was looking for a replacement to my worn out KJV. I loved the large ESV Study Bible I already owned and decided I would make the ESV my preferred Bible for services. I spent some time trying to understand why Crossway, the publishers of this beautiful ESV single column journaling Bible, said it was in 9.5 point type while Amazon stated it was 7.5. I even checked to see if US/UK point sizing was different (without success). Anyway I took the plunge and ordered anyway. To my delight it is actually 9.5. Delightful clear type and the space for 'journaling' is perfect with feint but clear enough dotted lines rather than the more bold ones that show up on illustrations. I was a bit concerned that there were no cross references but having seen the Bible now I think it would have affected the beautiful easy read look of the pages. I can soon build up my own cross references in the margins. On a 'cosmetic' note, a previous reviewer mentioned only managing to get the leather binding to wrap round twice rather the three times as illustrated. I agree. I can only assume the publishers have economised on the length of leather they provide! Small 'gripe' for what is a fabulous Bible. I'm hoping it will stay with me till He who will fulfil all, comes.
