Toxic Legacy: How the Weedkiller Glyphosate Is Destroying Our Health and the Environment Audible Audiobook – Unabridged

4.9 4.9 out of 5 stars 312 ratings

From an MIT scientist, mounting evidence that the active ingredient in the world’s most commonly used weedkiller is responsible for debilitating chronic diseases, including cancer, liver disease, and more

Glyphosate is the active ingredient in Roundup, the most commonly used weedkiller in the world. Nearly 300 million pounds of glyphosate-based herbicide are sprayed on farms - and food - every year.

Agrochemical companies claim that glyphosate is safe for humans, animals, and the environment. But emerging scientific research on glyphosate’s deadly disruption of the gut microbiome, its crippling effect on protein synthesis, and its impact on the body’s ability to use and transport sulfur - not to mention several landmark legal cases - tells a very different story.

In Toxic Legacy, senior research scientist Stephanie Seneff, PhD, delivers compelling evidence based on countless published, peer-reviewed studies - all in frank, illuminating, and always accessible language.

Throughout Toxic Legacy, listeners will discover:

  • The uniquely toxic nature of glyphosate
  • How glyphosate disrupts the microbiome, leading to gut dysbiosis, autoimmunity, neurodegeneration, and more
  • Why we’re seeing a rise in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, infertility, depression, and anxiety
  • Glyphosate’s role in soil degeneration, water contamination, and threats to wildlife and biodiversity
  • Important nutritional guidance for conscientious consumers who want to avoid glyphosate-contaminated foods and improve their health

As Rachel Carson did with DDT in the 1960s, Stephanie Seneff sounds the alarm on glyphosate, giving you guidance on simple, powerful changes you can make right now and essential information you need to protect your health, your family’s health, and the planet on which we all depend.

This was an eye-opening teardown of the pesticide glyphosate (more commonly known as RoundUp). Within the first two or three chapters Seneff has convinced you that it is incredibly toxic stuff - and likely contributing to a large amount of chronic health conditions that have increased in prevalence over the last 30ish years. She cites hundreds of scientific papers backing this up, and then dives deep (very deep) into the biological mechanisms by which this is all happening inside our bodies.

The book gets increasingly focused on biology (and increasingly difficult for non-biologists) as you go. Starting with the big picture: how glyphosate impacts health in various animal and human studies (accessible to anyone), and then drilling into how the specific pathway it targets causes problems for us (because it exists in our microbes), and then finally getting into the depths of amino-acid substitutions, and how the shape and makeup of a particular protein can make it more susceptible to glyphosate - thus explaining how it manages to affect our bodies in all these different ways.

The book is worth reading just for the first part, and if you want to deep dive into the biology it's all there for you, though you will likely need a strong cup of coffee and a notebook to make sense of it if you're not a biologist.

If you get overwhelmed by the science - and I did at times - I recommend skipping ahead to the last chapter where Seneff outlines what we can do with the situation we're in, and how we as individuals can improve our health with simple changes in our diets and behavior. Since reading this book I've tried much harder to eat as much organic, raw produce as is practical for our family.

I highly recommend the book and it will change your perspective on food. Just don't be surprised if you have trouble making it through the whole thing!

Dr. Seneff has written an extremely valuable book that all chronic illness patients need to read. I have been chronically ill for several years, unable to get well despite many treatments. I've only gotten worse. Because of Dr. Seneff, I tested myself for glyphosate toxicity to see if that's why I wasn't making progress. The results show that I do have moderately high levels of glyphosate in my urine. Dr. Seneff may just have provided me with the key to getting better. Her descriptions of the harms of glyphosate to the human body were invaluable. I can honestly say that I have many lab results that support her claims. On various tests, including a full DNA profile, Organic Acids Testing, Environmental Toxin Testing, and general lab testing, my results show that I am intolerant to oxalates; I am insulin resistant, though very thin; I cannot reduce proteins to their amino acid metabolites; I have problems metabolizing glucose; I have an overgrowth of yeast and Clostridium spp. in my gut; mitochondrial damage, plus many more things. Physically, I'm super inflamed and that manifests as moderate joint pain with diffuse muscular pain. I am a patient with mold illness and chronic Lyme disease with 3 co-infections of Lyme, so of course these also contribute to the problems I've already stated, but I simply can't get better with glyphosate in my body, which is now clearly evident. It's been near impossible for my cells and organs, particularly my liver, to detoxify, and now I have the key to as to why; something my doctor's could never figure out. If I can't detoxify, I certainly can't get rid of the back log of "killed" off Lyme and Lyme Co-infections. They just re-enter my body, building up to immensely toxic levels. Thank you Dr. Seneff for giving me the key to a path of recovery. I can only hope I'm not too late in addressing this monsterous chemical in my body.

"Toxic Legacy" describes how glyphosate is harmful to human health. The book is suitable both for scientists and non-scientists, but it can get technical. The author described in detail the mechanisms for how glyphosate does it's damage in a way that will convince scientists. She tried to describe the detailed scientific information in a way that the common person can follow (especially if you have some science background), but she also summarized her main points at the end of each section in a way that anyone can understand. The first few chapters and the last one are the easiest to understand, and the last chapter focused on what you can do to avoid the harm caused by glyphosate. Many of these suggestions are diet related, like buy Certified Organic food to minimalize glyphosate residue. While not the easiest read, I'd still highly recommend this important book to everyone and I've bought some additional copies to give to family members.

In depth to read, but the message is there... Stephanie is on youtube, 'The glyphosate effect: how the world's most common herbicide is undermining your health' (the real truth about health video)... she explains some of this here, quite nicely. GMO's are designed to take direct spray of this toxic chemical... glyphosate is absorbed through the leaves of plants, which means that we can't wash it off. We are all consuming glyphosate in our food. GMO's are in the produce department unlabeled. It is best to contact the head office of your grocer to label GMO produce and to email the city, mayor and council to ban the use of glyphosate/Roundup in your area.

Excellent well researched book.
So many studies and facts.
It does get a little technical/scientific (not all the book is an easy read as such but it does ALSO HAVE MUCH OF ITS CONTENT THAT IS VERY EASILY DIGESTABLE.
Every page is loaded with overwhelming and interesting information.

THE ULTIMATE BIBLE ON THE SUBJECT!
WELL WORTH THE READ
HIGHLY RECOMMEND

This TOXIN is practically within ALL FOOD we eat, weakening our our immunity (and destroying natural wildlife), LEAVING OUR BODIES MUCH MORE VULNERABLE FROM DETRIMENTAL ELEMENTS!
