BANNED FOR A DECADE!

The BBC gives over a whole evening to an 'investigation into the supernatural'. Four respected presenters and a camera crew attempt to discover the truth behind 'The most haunted house in Britain', expecting a light-hearted scare or two and probably the uncovering of a hoax. They think they are in control of the situation. They think they are safe. The viewers settle down and decide to watch 'for a laugh'. Ninety minutes later the BBC, and the country, was changed, and the consequences are still felt today.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

  • NEW! 30th Anniversary feature length documentary
  • NEW! Audio Commentary with film historians Dr. Shellie McMurdo (University of Hertfordshire/University of Roehampton) and Dr. Stella Gaynor (University of Salford)
  • Archival commentary with writer Stephen Volk, producer Ruth Baumgarten and director Lesley Manning
  • 'Shooting Reality' featurette by Lesley Manning

Very well made film

Very well made film
I've wanted to see this movie for a long time so I jumped at the chance to purchase the blu-ray. I was pleasantly surprised by how well this film was made and how detail oriented it is, not only the film but the boxset presentation here. There is a copy of the script, a short story booklet and character cards. As many have said, it definitely blurs the lines between fact and fiction. This is one of those films where you should keep an eye on what's going on in the background as there are some freaky glimpses of ghosts, some obvious and some subtle. The whole presentation came off as very believable and I can just imagine how the original audience in the early 90s totally flipped out seeing actual news reporters get in over their heads!

This is a very good presentation of Ghostwatch. I love the reprint of the script especially. The display box is sturdy and looks great. Five stars all around. I’m very glad to have a quality copy to enjoy whenever I want.

This is a very cool British Film from 1992. Think about Paranormal Activity.
A mother and her children are being haunted. A show called "Ghostwatch" enters their house to study the paranormal activity.

I ordered this mockumentary because Craig Charles is in it. His role is small, and serves as comic relief. I can see at the beginning at least, why people might have mistaken this film as a reality show. However, as it goes on (and on) it doesn’t get scarier, it just gets weirder. I normally do not watch horror movies, so I was a bit apprehensive about watching this one, given it’s reputation. I need not have worried. This might be more fun if watched on a Halloween night and if the viewers were 12.

There was Ghostwatch. Much in the vein how of people believed The Blair Witch Project to be real, many who tuned in on that Halloween night in 1992 when Ghostwatch aired on BBC also believed that the events that unfolded were actually happening. The legalities that followed aside, I believe that to be a sign of great filmmaking. If you are a fan of horror and/or mockumentaries, or simply want to see what all the fuss with this movie is about, check it out.

A live newscast, not unlike the old NBC movie Special Bulletin, but instead of a homebrew nuke, the subject is a suburban family house that may or may not be haunted by a poltergeist. Other reviewers here have given you synopses (or you can visit the Ghostwatch Wikipedia page), so I am going to briefly cover a few other aspects.

First, though the edition pictured here is British, the DVD is region free. So if your player or computer isn't region-free, you can still play it. (Hacking most players to be region free is easy. Ask Mr Google to show you how.)

Second, the rating is 12+, and deservedly so. Despite its dopey title, Ghostwatch is serious nightmare fuel and absolutely not for children, even though there are children in the cast. There are allusions to animal mutilation, mutilation by animals, and a hardcore pedophile who met an awful end. The children are not unscathed by the experience. The sound of screaming cats is heard several times. On the other hand, Ghostwatch does not show explicit gore. Use your best judgment for older kids and yourself. For me, watching it during the day would have been a better choice, since I am a massive weenie.

4.0 out of 5 stars Película para tv desconocida.

I had heard about this tv show only recently and was surprised that it was available on dvd. If I had watched this on live tv as a teen, I would have had a lot of nightmares. If you love Most Haunted you will love this feature.
The dvd was delivered in a decent time frame, it came from the U.K. It was packaged well and in excellent condition.
Update. I went to watch the dvd a second time but it would not play in any of my multi region players. Sadly the 30 day return time had passed.

I bought this DVD in October for a Halloween film-night with my partner. I know this isn't IMDB but here goes...

I clearly remember that sugar-filled Halloween night in 1992. I recall how we raced home to watch what was being touted as one of the TV events of the year: A live investigation in an actual haunted house. At 8 years old, my interest in the paranormal was all-consuming and it was the age in which I began writing my own tales of dread.

Even though it was actually billed as a drama at the beginning of the show (part of the Screen One productions for the BBC), most people I knew actually missed that part. So, we were watching what we thought was a live broadcast. The use of popular kids TV presenters, who we all saw every Saturday morning over our bowl of cereal, compounded the fact that it all seemed real.

About half an hour into this show, my brother (3 years older) became terrified and burst into tears - this I remember clearly. I then followed suit when I saw a ghost in front of the little girls' bedroom curtains.
My parents came into the room and switched the TV over, but every 5 minutes I would switch it back and become even more terrified. It wasn't until the show appeared on YouTube in full, about 10 years ago, that I watched the whole thing through. The YouTube upload was obviously taken down.

This show became notorious in the days and weeks that followed its broadcast. Most of the kids in my school watched it and were similarly terrified. It was actually banned from being shown again on the BBC due to the psychological effects on some viewers.

Ghostwatch does a great job in projecting an air of menace and fear. It builds the suspense perfectly over the course of the running time and then lets all hell break loose towards the end. It is 28 years old, so shows some telling signs of age, but I still found it unsettling to watch. Some of the acting goes amiss at certain points, which nobody would get away with these days. For the most part it is fine, though.

It is easy to see how this show may have inspired shows like Most Haunted and other paranormal investigation series'. I would even go as far as saying that The Blair Witch Project may have been partially inspired by this.

Re-watching this was like rediscovering a dusty old family heirloom, one which has controversial origins, but is ultimately unique.
