a specific plan for helping your child do better in school

Editorial Reviews

Review

"An absolute 'must read' for parents. Many detailed examples show you exactly how to teach your teenager the skills needed for success in school and beyond. The clever strategies for getting around teens' creative resistance to making changes are particularly helpful. I will recommend this gem of a book to all of the parents and adolescents I treat."--Arthur L. Robin, PhD, coauthor of Your Defiant Teen

"Executive skills are critical to success in life, but may be delayed in some teens and young adults--and parents are often at a loss for how to help. Smart but Scattered Teens is just what parents need. This is a highly useful guide for improving teens' executive skills and motivating them to use the skills they already have."--Patricia O. Quinn, MD, coauthor of Ready for Take-Off: Preparing Your Teen with ADHD or LD for College

"Does your teen's behavior have you tearing out your hair in frustration? Quit nagging and use this wonderfully insightful and practical book to coach your 'smart but scattered' teen for personal, educational, and social success."--William Pfohl, PsyD, past president, International School Psychology Association

"I was hooked from the first chapter! This book has opened my eyes to ways to foster my son's strengths, not just criticize his weaknesses. With all the issues we battle daily, it's easy to forget the power of the positive. I'm thrilled to have a specific plan of action for targeting the skills my son needs to do better in school and become more focused and responsible."--Kim L.

"The book's 'executive skills' are the critical tools needed to solve problems, manage time, and perform tasks. As many parents know, tweens and teens often lack these abilities....A very helpful addition to parenting shelves."
Library Journal Published On: 2013-02-14

“An easy-to-read, well-documented, and well-resourced book that, if utilized, would surely better both the relationship between any teen and their parents and also assist the teen in developing better executive function skills….It is a book that can be recommended to parents by professionals working with teenagers….Guilford is to be commended for offering this book at such reasonable pricing. Hopefully it will increase the utility and desire on many parents’ parts to purchase this book so that it can help their families and their teenagers.” ―

I worked in a trauma-informed setting with high school students for two school years. I needed something in addition to what the school offered in the way of training and faculty support. Being left on my own to figure it out, I searched and read lots of reviews. This book and its companion rose to the top of my purchase list. I have yet to be disappointed in either of these selections.

I currently used the ideas in this book to guide my nephew who is smart but scattered, even though he is 20+. But this works for tween as well as young adults in their first few years of twenties, as I experienced and witnessed.
Read many times to understand or materialize the skills in details and in action.

This book is a great resource for middle school kid parents. My child is 7 th grade. I guess I could have started last year but we were in the midst of pandemic and most of schools were shut. So this year, Now that my daughter is back to school, I have a time to read and really focus on skills she needs.
It helps identify my EXecutive function skills vs my teen.
It is a great book to identify the problems and giving strategies as well.
Highly recommend for parents who have no idea how to help teen w organizational problems

So far it’s like reading about my own teenager. It’s a good book to organize all the information we already know as ADHD parents.

The book itself is incredible, I highly recommend reading it, and if it had been a quality copy, I would have given it 5 stars. However, this was the first book I have purchased through Amazon that had pages majorly screwed up. There were several chapters missing from my version, and they were replaced by a duplicate copy of the last few chapters... so apparently the book was the same thickness, which must have made the publishing mistake unnoticeable somehow, but was a very incomplete publishing job. Unfortunately, because this is a go-at-your own pace self-help book, I did not get far enough in the book to discover the mess up before it was too late to return to Amazon. So I'm giving my particular book 3 stars simply because I am extremely unhappy to have purchased this version, and from now on whenever I order books online, I guess I will have to page through every page of the book as soon as I receive it just to make sure it's not messed up like this one was.

Teen who is very mentally active and loves doing so many things she Just leaves things undone and thus her focus falls to guide her to a better finished product and a way of achieving and setting better goals for herself. It works but you must work with them and guide and direct them and give plenty of praise. It's hard to change the way they handed it before they develop their teenage brain and the world is so crazy and fast paced. Worth the purchase and reading to help them get more together in High School and beyond!

A book which has been hyped greatly, but just seems a bit scattered itself. The examples and scenarios described are somewhat old-fashioned and not all plausible, and for the most part, no real solutions are offered . To be fair I have not yet read the book cover to cover , but I did read at least half of it, and was not completely happy . Not really what I was hoping for. I looked up the authors' blog, and it was seen to be sadly neglected by them. I feel these authors need to update themselves to teen issues of the present day.

What I'm upset about is this is a USED BOOK that has been highlighted! I never agreed to a used highlighted book..buyer beware
If this was a gift I would return it and be livid. I'm not returning it because other than the highlights it's in perfect shape and I would have highlighted most of what was highlighted 😂 I give 1 star to the seller for not being honest.
