I've been writing about business, management, and economics for more than 40 years. I've written or coauthored seven books and collaborated on several others. I've also contributed to a variety of periodicals, including Inc., the Atlantic, the New Republic, and Harvard Business Review.
Since 1995 I’ve been writing mostly about the remarkable phenomena of open-book management and employee ownership. In 2005 I collaborated with Corey Rosen and Martin Staubus on the book Equity: Why Employee Ownership Is Good for Business. Later, I was privileged to serve a three-year term on the board of the National Center for Employee Ownership, for which I developed the popular booklet Employee Ownership: Building a Better American Economy.
I'm very excited to see my new book, also written with Corey Rosen: it's called OWNERSHIP: Reinventing Companies, Capitalism, and Who Owns What. Berrett-Koehler will be publishing it in early fall 2022.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2017I stumbled across this (or, really, algorithm recommendation) this summer, sadly after I finished my first grad degree. Now on my second grad degree, one of my professors assigned us this book. If you're not a business analytics, accountant, or hard core MBA but need to understand the "basics plus" of finance, then you should read this book. It's written for us normal people, it's easy to digest, and even has exercises in the back you can work through. Paired with some online classes like Lynda.com (I'm not paid, I just like to round out my learning with some "lectures" vice only reading) you should be able to understand what finance people are talking about as it relates to your business.

Book seems great but low quality distracts me from reading it.

Images in this review - Reviewed in the United States on December 9, 2012A budding entrepreneur needs some knowledge of business finance and operations. This text constitutes a short course on Finance an Accounting Principles. "Financial Intelligence for Entrepreneurs" provides an insightful overview into the meanings of financial numbers while not really delving into the depths of accounting required for a complete analysis. It is useful - especially from a strategic perspective, and it is easy to assimilate. I was able to get through about 80% of the text in a weekend. The last one-third of the text consists of a "Toolbox" of spreadsheet examples and methods to apply in analyzing your own company - or potential investments. I underlined and highlighted extensively and expect to re-read parts until the ideas are mastered.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 28, 2019This book is an excellent resource for the layman who desires to have a working knowledge of accounting practices. You will be able to examine all the financial documents necessary to run a business and to do that with confidence. Worth the money and time.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2015Very very nice explained! Better than a lot university courses! This book is mainly aimed to non financial people, however people who has financial background can learn too. Normally financial books are boring, this one is short and you will definitely learn. It focus on the main ratios you need to know, and will tell you what the numbers mean.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 5, 2013I am not an entrepreneur, but I work for a very small start-up with increasing business responsibilities from marketing to finance, which is out of my area of expertise (life science). This book is really great in helping an individual develop a solid foundation for understanding and applying the financial knowledge within this book. The author's writing style is engaging and the exercises at the end of the book were useful. Overall, pleased with the book!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 28, 2020I’ve never been good at accounting, and my business has run off of very limited accounting practices of just know how much money I had and how much I was losing or making over a 1 month period. But now I have a much greater understanding of what’s going on in my business and you can too. This book takes a day to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best book that I've found on finance for business. Highly digestible and not dry in the least.
I expected this book to put me to sleep. However, I found that the information was incredibly easy to digest. The authors do an absolutely amazing job turning what could easily be one of the dryest subjects into a pleasant read packed with vital information for any business owner. Highly recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Slightly disappointing
I am not a "finance guy", however was still left a bit disappointed by the little insights I gained from this book.
I was missing more practical "hacks" and tricks on how to set up finance in a startup in the real world.
