This pellet smoker is awesome. I have used all kinds of smokers over the years. I used to go out in the woods and cut my own hickory trees down. I would cut them up into chunks and use them on a charcoal smoker just to get the smoke flavor. I would get out of bed every 3 hours in the middle of the night just to tend to the wood smoker. I’ve progressed from charcoal to gas smokers, to electric and everything in between even a few DIY builds along the way.. My Masterbuilt electric smoker died a while back and I bought this one. I was skeptical at first that I made the right choice however, after using it several times I have fallen in love. It works great, has a really good flavor, and it’s really easy to use. I know the diehard “pit bosses” will say anyone can use those and make good food. Well yea, that’s the point. I just want good food!! I don’t need bragging rights. I’ll let the food do the talking.I was skeptical that it was going to use a lot of pellets, but it doesn’t. It takes a little bit to bring it up at temperature but once it gets there, it just sips on pellets and hardly uses any at all. I have smoked for probably 100 hours at 225* and I’ve only used maybe 40 pounds of pellets $16/ 40lb bag at Lowe’s (Walmart is cheaper, but they don’t have a good selection and depending on the time of year all mine has is busted bags no one wants).I wouldn’t use this grill to cook burgers or a steak. Don’t get me wrong you can and I have done burgers. It’s not the best grill for that though. Like I said, it uses a fair amount of pellets to get up to temp. Running it at high heat for a short period of time is not super efficient. I’d opt for my charcoal grill for those tasks. IMHO.

I would cut them up into chunks and use them on a charcoal smoker just to get the smoke flavor. I would get out of bed every 3 hours in the middle of the night just to tend to the wood smoker. I’ve progressed from charcoal to gas smokers, to electric and everything in between even a few DIY builds along the way.. My Masterbuilt electric smoker died a while back and I bought this one. I was skeptical at first that I made the right choice however, after using it several times I have fallen in love. It works great, has a really good flavor, and it’s really easy to use. I know the diehard “pit bosses” will say anyone can use those and make good food. Well yea, that’s the point. I just want good food!! I don’t need bragging rights. I’ll let the food do the talking.
    I was skeptical that it was going to use a lot of pellets, but it doesn’t. It takes a little bit to bring it up at temperature but once it gets there, it just sips on pellets and hardly uses any at all. I have smoked for probably 100 hours at 225* and I’ve only used maybe 40 pounds of pellets $16/ 40lb bag at Lowe’s (Walmart is cheaper, but they don’t have a good selection and depending on the time of year all mine has is busted bags no one wants).

    I wouldn’t use this grill to cook burgers or a steak. Don’t get me wrong you can and I have done burgers. It’s not the best grill for that though. Like I said, it uses a fair amount of pellets to get up to temp. Running it at high heat for a short period of time is not super efficient. I’d opt for my charcoal grill for those tasks. IMHO.

    #1 recommendation to every new user, DON'T use Traeger pellets, they are GARBAGE. Lumberjack if you can (supreme mix is great), Bear mountain is good, so are CookingPellets Perfect mix. You need a pellet with both a decent amount of a mild heat wood like oak, and 30%+ actual flavor wood. Traeger pellets are "flavored" alder, all around mediocre. 100% oak works well and provides heat well. For flavor go with a blend like a hickory (bacony), or apple (sweet), or mesquite for that Texas twang. Supreme mix and perfect mix are great all-around.

    I bought this for smoking, period. The barrel design, indirect heat, plus very low temperature stability (holds 150 or 180 great) is fantastic for smoking meat low and slow. This was an area my last grill was mediocre. My past efforts and my many future plans for this thing, none involve temps over 250.

    On the flip side this is NOT for high heat cooking. I can get it up to over 400 (see picture, note that was with good pellets), but my old pellet grill would do 550 with direct heat, and my gas grill almost 700. Not using this for steaks or burgers, so it doesn't bother me, but I hopefully save some people a headache.

    I’m giving this a 5 star because it is a fantastic grill that gives great flavor to the food. The problem I have with it is that it does not smoke as much in the 225-275 range as my RecTeq did. I recommend getting this grill 100% but I highly recommend getting some smoke tubes for it. They work great! I’m satisfied 100%.

    I have two other pellet smokers. But I wanted a larger one I could really load up. I have yet to find any issues with this product from order to firing it up. One bit of information I have when first firing it up. It may take a while for the pellets to reach the fire pan the first time. It may throw a code for not reaching the target temperature in the correct amount of time. Shut off and start over allowing a little extra time for them to reach the fire pan. I would buy again, but I expect this one will last a long time.

    Okay so Im a BIG GREEN EGG guy and love cooking on that but dont like low & slow cooking on it. I went through 2 Masterbuilt smokers that died on me after a couple of years and I was recommended this gem! For the record, Im new to pellet cooking/smoking and to be honest was a bit skeptical but decided to give it a whirl and boy Im sure glad I did! 1st of all, not only did they deliver and BUILD it for FREE, they did it right and even added the extra shelf I ordered separately too. Its very easy to operate but like most things, you need to get used to it and it heats and maintains temperature pretty precisely! I cooked a prime rib low and slow at 225 for 5 hours and it came out perfectly! The smoke flavor was absolutely amazing (not over powering at all) and the meat coked evenly all the way through. You see al the great reviews...Yeah they are certainly real just like mine. You NEED to purchase the extra shelf...Not sure why it doesn't come with it but it is absolutely a MUST HAVE. I pulled it apart to see the inside and there is this white spot. NO GREASE evident. Answer from Traeger was 'you have to clean inside with de-greaser after every 2nd use' to remove creosote. WHAT??!! It's obvious that this smoker has defective paint and can't handle a mere 250-300 degree heat for smoking meat. Ridiculous waste of 600 dollars. DO NOT BUY THIS SMOKER! I will not be a repeat customer and tell everyone I know to avoid Traeger. JUNK.
