Mystery of L’Inconnu: A Thriller (Detective Remy Ferguson Thriller Mystery Series Book 1) Kindle Edition
A luxury cruise on the super yacht L’Inconnu begins to tarnish when one glamorous guest after another visits the infirmary under unusual circumstances. Then an unexpected storm recedes with death in its wake. And when unimaginable terror strikes, the guests and crew must unite to take staggering action.
Detective Remy Ferguson and his Miami Dade team are called to investigate the chilling multiple murder discovered on L’Inconnu, adrift at sea. Was it a drug smuggling deal gone bad, retaliation on rich and privileged passengers, or a sinister force with secret motivations? Every trail of clues falls short of finding the killer.
Ferguson can’t shake the feeling that someone relishes the torment of staying one step ahead of him. To catch the elusive criminal, he must confront a dark and twisted evil that threatens his own life.
"Mystery of L'Inconnu is an intricately woven narrative that masterfully balances subtle suspense with high-octane action, delivering an experience that is both intellectually stimulating and viscerally thrilling...leaves readers eagerly clamoring for more." Tambi Smith, Mystic Shadows Book Club

- Reviewed in the United States on October 30, 2024We begin with a real tease of a prologue, opening on what marks Day 7 for luxury yacht, L’Inconnu’s scheduled cruise. The Coast Guard discovers the ship drifting at sea while tending to another mission. The ship has obviously been fired upon, and no one aboard is responding to the Coast Guard’s hails, so they redirect their efforts to investigate. Human lives may be at stake, and that always takes priority. We don’t know exactly what they discover, only that it’s horrific, and stateside, Detective Remy Ferguson of the Miami-Dade police is being tasked to fully investigate the situation, despite his aversion to water. His reputation for honest, thorough investigations has preceded him, and diplomacy is required as some “very important persons” are likely involved.
And then we don’t see or hear from the main character again for half the book.
Instead, we are taken back to the beginning of the cruise and Day 1, where a disparate collection of wealthy invitees of Royal Knight Cruise Lines are preparing to board. Royal Knight’s agenda is clear: They offer elite clients a multi-day, all-expenses-paid cruise aboard one of their flagship vessels in the hopes of selling a similar ship to its guests at the conclusion of the trip—think time-share, only without the sharing. We are introduced to both the ship’s crew and the guests, all of whom seem to have some clandestine self-interest, and as the days pass, their various activities begin to sharpen into focus. Carefully laid plans begin to derail as a violent and unexpected storm approaches, and soon enough, the cruise descends into life-or-death chaos.
The Love Boat this AIN’T.
Just as we are starting to think we know what’s going on, Grylles pulls another switcheroo in the timeline, jumping ahead from Day 4 to Day 7, where we work backwards through the case as we ride along with Detective Remy Ferguson, who is finally front and center in the narrative. The unusual construct of the story works brilliantly, keeping readers mystified as to exactly what happened during those four fateful days, and who amongst the guests and crew are good or bad. As I mentioned in my earlier review for Grylles’ prequel Ferguson novella, “Dragging Down,” there’s a distinct Columbo vibe at play here, as we’re fed just enough of the puzzle to keep us guessing right along with Detective Ferguson as he and his team start connecting dots that might have easily been overlooked by a lesser investigative team.
By the end, you’ll probably think you’ve got it all figured out—but I highly doubt it. The denouement is loaded with unforeseen twists, turns, and personal peril for our intrepid detective as he struggles to uncover the truth without losing his life in the process. Ferguson himself is as enigmatic as the mystery he works to solve, and by the end of the story, we really don’t know much more about the man personally than we did at the beginning. It seems to be a deliberate choice as Grylles’ ability to create vivid characterization is certainly never in doubt, based on the rest of the colorful cast of characters who keep the story engaging and the pages turning.
Exciting, high-octane full-length debut for a series will leave you hungry for more.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 28, 2025I recently read The Mystery of L’Inconnu and I was thinking about this the entire time I read this book, it’s written to attract the male reader. My husband would love it if I could get him away from magazines and news stories. It’s character rich with an intense plot along with some twists that I was surprised by. Without giving anything away, you will enjoy the trip as well as the story.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 15, 2024I enjoyed the authors writing style, but did agree with other reviews that it was difficult to remember who was who re: the cast of characters.
I very much appreciated the lack of
profanity!
My biggest frustration was that the author didn't explain the clues as Remy found them. For example, all of a sudden he's in Haiti and you have no idea why he went there until a few pages later. I did NOT like the ending. It was very unsatisfactory. If this is going to be a series with Detective Remy Ferguson, which it appears is the case, the author may want to have endings that are worthy of continuing on with this detective.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 21, 2024This book was like nothing I’ve ever read before. It had so many subplots that everything was ever changing. There were an infinite number of mysterious people because a lot of the characters were random people who had never met before. Many were the ultra rich and famous so the were spoiled and self absorbed which meant the didn’t act acceptably. This led to lots of complications, fights and arguments amongst them.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 16, 2023I am working on putting together a thriller at sea cruise for 2024 (for authors and readers) and have been on a kick to read books set on a ship. This book was very entertaining and I went back-and-forth on who the “bad guy“ was. It is a long read, but well worth the time. There are quite a few characters, and sometimes they are referred by their first name and other times by their last name. I got confused a couple of times but this is a great action, whodunit book. The author thought of everything! I cannot wait for book 2!!!!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 7, 2024Intriguing and well done shirts of time frame that added to the mystery. I recommend and will read more from this author

5.0 out of 5 stars Masterful who dunnit
The construct of this book is nothing short of genius. Very original and leaves you guessing about so many things right until the very end.
We start off learning that the luxury yacht L’Inconnu has been discovered with no-one aboard and evidence of foul play. We get to briefly meet the detective assigned to the case, Remy Ferguson.
We then go back to the first day of the cruise, where we meet the guests and the crew. Over the next few days we get to know these characters quite well, and as details emerge through their interactions, we begin to suspect them all. That is despite the fact that we still don’t know what crime has been committed. Perhaps they were all victims. You will start to develop theories, as Dan drops little breadcrumbs, but you will not be prepared for what unfolds.
Returning to Remy, we start to get an idea of what occurred on board the yacht, as he and his team gather evidence and put together the likely scenarios.
Once we finally figure out what happened, we’re still left wondering how it happened. The grand finale of the story will reveal all and it will not be anything close to what you might have been thinking.
Dan writes in a way that draws you in and has you glued to each page, eagerly awaiting the next clue. The depth of the character development is tremendous - you feel like you genuinely know these people, which further invests you in the outcome.
I simply loved this book. Storytelling at its finest. It’s the first in a series, but can be read as a standalone. A round of applause to Dan - can’t wait to read more. A solid 5 star read that I think any fan of thrillers, mysteries, and who dunnits will thoroughly enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible
What a roller-coaster of a book. I gladly gave up hours of sleep, reluctant to stop reading as the tension continued without a break. Dangerous situations after dangerous situations followed as we shared the passengers' shock and terror. The situation reached an impossible crisis situation and certain death appeared inevitable. The conflict was interrupted when outside authorities discovered the massacre and struggled to understand what had happened on the yacht. The reader's confusion continued but was unprepared for the twist that followed. The true motive was one that the reader had never imagined.

I really enjoyed it and did not foresee the ending. Pity about the undercover cop. Would enjoy reading the sequel sometime soon.
