Miami’s best detective is called to solve a blood curdling crime at sea. Will he catch the murderer, or be the next victim?

A luxury cruise on the super yacht L’Inconnu begins to tarnish when one glamorous guest after another visits the infirmary under unusual circumstances. Then an unexpected storm recedes with death in its wake. And when unimaginable terror strikes, the guests and crew must unite to take staggering action.

Detective Remy Ferguson and his Miami Dade team are called to investigate the chilling multiple murder discovered on L’Inconnu, adrift at sea. Was it a drug smuggling deal gone bad, retaliation on rich and privileged passengers, or a sinister force with secret motivations? Every trail of clues falls short of finding the killer.

Ferguson can’t shake the feeling that someone relishes the torment of staying one step ahead of him. To catch the elusive criminal, he must confront a dark and twisted evil that threatens his own life.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"As the ship sets sail from Miami Beach to the Bahamas, the crew and passengers are in for the surprise of their lives. Lieutenant Detective Remington Ferguson is with the Miami-Dade Police Department. He has been tasked with determining what happened on the boat and why more than two dozen people are dead. The author's book brings the surprises early and often in this addictive mystery/thriller. Grylles never fails to throw the reader a curveball or two when it is least expected." -US Review of Books RECOMMENDED

A tour de force in storytelling!
Experience the pinnacle of luxury aboard The Royal Knights cruise line! The magnificent fleet, designed to dazzle and pamper, invites the elite to indulge in a complimentary, all-expenses-paid multi-day cruise on one of their premier yachts. This exclusive voyage offers a perfect blend of relaxation, adventure, and opulence, providing a tantalizing glimpse into the extravagant lifestyle awaiting those who choose to own such a magnificent vessel. Whether soaking up the sun on deck, exploring exotic destinations, or reveling in the finest amenities, The Royal Knights cruise line ensures an unforgettable experience that showcases the true essence of high living...at least that is what most people thought. The sun had barely dipped below the horizon when the first signs of trouble began to surface aboard L’Inconnu. A luxurious yacht, it was meant to be an idyllic escape for its wealthy patrons—until one by one, guests started making their way to the infirmary under increasingly peculiar circumstances. Patricia Harrison was now bedridden, her complexion ghostly pale and her temperate increased. Her husband, usually by her side, could only watch helplessly as she grew weaker. Then came John Preston, whose allergic reaction to something he consumed, although specifically noted in his dietary restrictions. The chaos escalated when a clandestine drug drop-off turned fatal, the lifeless body discovered in his room. A storm gathered strength on the horizon, darkening the skies and whipping the seas into a frenzy. When the storm picked up in strength, the yacht's engine had died, leaving L’Inconnu to drift aimlessly into the volatile waters, the grandeur of its cabins now a prison for most of its concerned occupants.Panic set in as the guests realized the gravity of their situation. A deadly cocktail of fear and suspicion brewed among them, exacerbated by the realization that the most unimaginable terror had yet to strike. As alliances frayed and trust disintegrated, whispers of betrayal spread. The night was punctuated by crew members gathering the guests to lead them quickly and quietly to the safe rooms that were hidden within the yacht as a deadly force had tracked them down. The guests and crew needed to unite and take staggering action to save themselves, however, the turn of events had forced some people into the extreme concern of not knowing whom they can trust – overall, leading to an unimaginable death toll.Detective Remy Ferguson and his Miami Dade team boarded the eerily silent yacht, the scene that greeted them was nothing short of a nightmare. Bodies lay sprawled in gruesome display, each telling a story of fear and betrayal. However, someone cleaned up all the evidence, making every lead seem to dissolve into thin air. Was this the work of a botched drug deal, a vendetta against the opulent elite, or something far more sinister and unfathomable? With each passing moment, Ferguson felt the invisible eyes of a cunning adversary watching him, taunting him. The yacht, L’Inconnu—meaning 'The Unknown'—seemed to harbor secrets that defied logic and reason. To unravel the mystery, Ferguson would have to peer into the abyss of human depravity, confronting a malevolence that threatened to consume not only the guests and crew but his very soul. As the waves crashed against the hull, the detective knew that whoever or whatever orchestrated this macabre spectacle reveled in remaining just out of reach, a phantom in the night. One of the most compelling aspects of Dan Grylles' "Mystery of L’Inconnu" is its departure from the conventional structure of a mystery thriller. Traditionally, mystery novels follow a predictable path: a crime is committed, a detective steps in, clues are uncovered, and the culprit is eventually revealed. However, Dan Grylles defies this formula, opting instead for a narrative that immerses readers in the lives of the characters aboard the L’Inconnu, gradually building suspense through their interactions and secrets. The prologue provides a tantalizing glimpse into the chaotic aftermath of what was discovered on the L’Inconnu, setting the stage for an unconventional story. Rather than immediately diving into the investigative process, Dan Grylles allows readers to experience the unfolding events firsthand. This unique approach places the reader in the midst of hushed conversations, hidden relationships, and the mounting tension that permeates the ship. Each interaction and fragment of dialogue serves to heighten the suspense, leaving readers to piece together the mystery from a myriad of subtle clues and red herrings. In "Mystery of L'Inconnu," the characters are masterfully written, embodying a rich tapestry of human experience and emotion, each meticulously well-developed with intricate backstories, motivations, and personal flaws. These well-rounded individuals transcend mere plot devices, portrayed instead as real people with complex psychologies and tangible presences. Their distinctiveness is further heightened by unique voices, with varied speech styles, tones, and accents, allowing readers to effortlessly differentiate between them and enriching their engagement with the story. The dialogue, crafted with authenticity and nuance, not only propels the plot but also deepens the reader's understanding of each character's inner world, with interactions charged with subtext that reveal underlying tensions and alliances. This sophisticated approach to character development and dialogue ensures that each individual in the story is vividly rendered and memorable, making the novel a compelling and immersive read."Mystery on L'Inconnu" is an intricately woven narrative that masterfully balances subtle suspense with high-octane action, delivering an experience that is both intellectually stimulating and viscerally thrilling. From the outset, readers are drawn into a web of intrigue that builds with meticulous precision, creating an atmosphere of pervasive tension. The story's pacing is carefully calibrated, ensuring that each event, whether understated or explosive, is given its due prominence without overwhelming the reader. The narrative's intensity is further amplified by the vivid descriptions of the L'Inconnu vessel itself, a labyrinthine setting that becomes almost a character in its own right. The ship's creaking corridors and shadowed alcoves are brought to life with such descriptive clarity that readers can almost hear the whisper of the ocean against its hull. As the plot unfolds, the juxtaposition of the ship's eerie stillness after the storm with the frenetic chaos of unfolding events keeps readers on edge, their anticipation mounting with each turn of the page. The true brilliance of "Mystery of L’Inconnu" lies in its ability to keep readers guessing. With so many potential culprits and so many layers of deceit, the narrative maintains an almost unbearable level of suspense. It isn't until the chaotic aftermath that readers experience Detective Remy Ferguson entering the scene, bringing with him the possibility of order and the hope of resolution. By then, readers are left reeling, questioning everything they thought they knew. Dan Grylles masterfully weaves a tale that is as much about the journey as it is about the destination, ensuring that the mystery of L’Inconnu lingers long after the final page is turned. Just as readers believe they have everything figured out, Dan Grylles masterfully pulls the rug from underneath them, introducing a new round of twists that heighten the suspense even further. As he expertly ties up loose ends in a perfect bow, readers are left astounded by the intricate storytelling. The conclusion is so gripping and unexpected that it leaves readers eagerly clamoring for more."Mystery on L'Inconnu" is a tour de force in storytelling, a meticulously crafted tale that promises to keep readers enthralled from the first whisper of suspense to the final, breathless revelation.

We begin with a real tease of a prologue, opening on what marks Day 7 for luxury yacht, L’Inconnu’s scheduled cruise. The Coast Guard discovers the ship drifting at sea while tending to another mission. The ship has obviously been fired upon, and no one aboard is responding to the Coast Guard’s hails, so they redirect their efforts to investigate. Human lives may be at stake, and that always takes priority. We don’t know exactly what they discover, only that it’s horrific, and stateside, Detective Remy Ferguson of the Miami-Dade police is being tasked to fully investigate the situation, despite his aversion to water. His reputation for honest, thorough investigations has preceded him, and diplomacy is required as some “very important persons” are likely involved.

And then we don’t see or hear from the main character again for half the book.

Instead, we are taken back to the beginning of the cruise and Day 1, where a disparate collection of wealthy invitees of Royal Knight Cruise Lines are preparing to board. Royal Knight’s agenda is clear: They offer elite clients a multi-day, all-expenses-paid cruise aboard one of their flagship vessels in the hopes of selling a similar ship to its guests at the conclusion of the trip—think time-share, only without the sharing. We are introduced to both the ship’s crew and the guests, all of whom seem to have some clandestine self-interest, and as the days pass, their various activities begin to sharpen into focus. Carefully laid plans begin to derail as a violent and unexpected storm approaches, and soon enough, the cruise descends into life-or-death chaos.

    The Love Boat this AIN’T.

Just as we are starting to think we know what’s going on, Grylles pulls another switcheroo in the timeline, jumping ahead from Day 4 to Day 7, where we work backwards through the case as we ride along with Detective Remy Ferguson, who is finally front and center in the narrative. The unusual construct of the story works brilliantly, keeping readers mystified as to exactly what happened during those four fateful days, and who amongst the guests and crew are good or bad. As I mentioned in my earlier review for Grylles’ prequel Ferguson novella, “Dragging Down,” there’s a distinct Columbo vibe at play here, as we’re fed just enough of the puzzle to keep us guessing right along with Detective Ferguson as he and his team start connecting dots that might have easily been overlooked by a lesser investigative team.

By the end, you’ll probably think you’ve got it all figured out—but I highly doubt it. The denouement is loaded with unforeseen twists, turns, and personal peril for our intrepid detective as he struggles to uncover the truth without losing his life in the process. Ferguson himself is as enigmatic as the mystery he works to solve, and by the end of the story, we really don’t know much more about the man personally than we did at the beginning. It seems to be a deliberate choice as Grylles’ ability to create vivid characterization is certainly never in doubt, based on the rest of the colorful cast of characters who keep the story engaging and the pages turning.

Exciting, high-octane full-length debut for a series will leave you hungry for more.

I recently read The Mystery of L’Inconnu and I was thinking about this the entire time I read this book, it’s written to attract the male reader. My husband would love it if I could get him away from magazines and news stories. It’s character rich with an intense plot along with some twists that I was surprised by. Without giving anything away, you will enjoy the trip as well as the story.

I enjoyed the authors writing style, but did agree with other reviews that it was difficult to remember who was who re: the cast of characters.

I very much appreciated the lack of
    profanity!

My biggest frustration was that the author didn't explain the clues as Remy found them. For example, all of a sudden he's in Haiti and you have no idea why he went there until a few pages later. I did NOT like the ending. It was very unsatisfactory. If this is going to be a series with Detective Remy Ferguson, which it appears is the case, the author may want to have endings that are worthy of continuing on with this detective.

This book was like nothing I’ve ever read before. It had so many subplots that everything was ever changing. There were an infinite number of mysterious people because a lot of the characters were random people who had never met before. Many were the ultra rich and famous so the were spoiled and self absorbed which meant the didn’t act acceptably. This led to lots of complications, fights and arguments amongst them.

I am working on putting together a thriller at sea cruise for 2024 (for authors and readers) and have been on a kick to read books set on a ship. This book was very entertaining and I went back-and-forth on who the “bad guy“ was. It is a long read, but well worth the time. There are quite a few characters, and sometimes they are referred by their first name and other times by their last name. I got confused a couple of times but this is a great action, whodunit book. The author thought of everything! I cannot wait for book 2!!!!

The construct of this book is nothing short of genius. Very original and leaves you guessing about so many things right until the very end.

We start off learning that the luxury yacht L’Inconnu has been discovered with no-one aboard and evidence of foul play. We get to briefly meet the detective assigned to the case, Remy Ferguson.

We then go back to the first day of the cruise, where we meet the guests and the crew. Over the next few days we get to know these characters quite well, and as details emerge through their interactions, we begin to suspect them all. That is despite the fact that we still don’t know what crime has been committed. Perhaps they were all victims. You will start to develop theories, as Dan drops little breadcrumbs, but you will not be prepared for what unfolds.

Returning to Remy, we start to get an idea of what occurred on board the yacht, as he and his team gather evidence and put together the likely scenarios.

Once we finally figure out what happened, we’re still left wondering how it happened. The grand finale of the story will reveal all and it will not be anything close to what you might have been thinking.

Dan writes in a way that draws you in and has you glued to each page, eagerly awaiting the next clue. The depth of the character development is tremendous - you feel like you genuinely know these people, which further invests you in the outcome.

I simply loved this book. Storytelling at its finest. It’s the first in a series, but can be read as a standalone. A round of applause to Dan - can’t wait to read more. A solid 5 star read that I think any fan of thrillers, mysteries, and who dunnits will thoroughly enjoy.

What a roller-coaster of a book. I gladly gave up hours of sleep, reluctant to stop reading as the tension continued without a break. Dangerous situations after dangerous situations followed as we shared the passengers' shock and terror. The situation reached an impossible crisis situation and certain death appeared inevitable. The conflict was interrupted when outside authorities discovered the massacre and struggled to understand what had happened on the yacht. The reader's confusion continued but was unprepared for the twist that followed. The true motive was one that the reader had never imagined.
