Editorial Reviews

Review

"Cheryl uses her in-depth kidlit knowledge to decode and deconstruct writing. She'll help you get your story straight!" - Rajani LaRocca, 2022 John Newbery Honor Winner

"Victoria's class helped me better understand story and craft for any age. Her enthusiasm and good-humored style helped launch what I hope to be a long, rewarding career." - Kaija Langley, Award-winning author of When Langston Dances (Simon & Schuster)

"Cheryl is a wonderful teacher! She is knowledgeable and supportive, and her course is a terrific introduction to writing children's books." - Alison Goldberg, Author of I Love You for Miles and Miles (FSG/MacMillan)

"The light conversational tone of this unique book on how to write for children belies the wealth of information inside. Presented as a self-directed course, it is chock full of the necessary basics of writing for a young audience, T he seasoned authors smartly concentrate on the three main sections of this genre: Picture Book, Middle Grade, and Young Adult. Included are terrific writing exercises, tricks of the trade, and ways to familiarize oneself with the market. While often using published books as models, the focus is primarily upon how to mine ideas and channel the writer's imagination, the importance of structure, and the absolute necessity for what is referred to as 'heart.' To my mind Writing Kid Lit 101 is a much needed addition to the library of anyone who aspires to write for young people and those who would like to improve their skills in this area or to know more about what is being published today for children of all ages. I recommend it highly." - Kidlit giant Pat Lowery Collins

If you want to write for kids, but aren't sure where to start, this book is for you. It covers everything you need to know including the differences between picture books, and books for middle grade or young adult readers. It's structured as a self-paced course, and moves from an overview of the current kid lit space, to specific writing skills you need to master (voice, character, plot and structure, and so on). It's all explained in clear language, and includes handy "tips and tricks," exercises, and a Call to Action at the end of the chapter to help you implement what you've learned. The craft elements are even broken down into best practices depending on the age group you write for. You can use this on your own, or better yet, get a group of writer friends and work through it together. It's a great addition to the library of a writer who wants to know what it takes to create compelling stories for kids.

Every so often, someone contacts me for advice about getting started in the world of kidlit. I was there once too, having no idea where to start—which is why I put together a page of resources for writers and illustrators on my website.
Today, I was excited to add a new craft book, because we've been due for an up-to-date introduction to writing for children. Perfect and thorough, I'm so happy to finally be able to share this one!
