A Failure of Nerve: Leadership in the Age of the Quick Fix (10th Anniversary, Revised Edition) Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 515 ratings

An invitation and guide for leaders “to cast a courageous and imaginative vision, to lead resiliently, and to be present and steady in times of deep anxiety.”

Ed Friedman’s genius was to see the individual in the family in the larger group, bringing the wisdom of his experience as a therapist and rabbi to the field of organizational leadership.

A timeless bestseller, A Failure of Nerve still astonishes in this new edition with its relevance and continues to transform the lives of leaders everywhere—business, church, family, schools—as it has for more than 20 years:

  • Offers prescient guide to leadership in the age of “quick fix.”
  • Provides ways to recognize and address organizational dysfunction.
  • Emphasizes “strength over pathology” in these anxious times.

“The age that is upon us requires differentiated leadership that is willing to rise above the anxiety of the masses. We need leaders who will have the ‘capacity to understand and deal effectively’ with the hive mind that is us. This is, in Friedman's words, ‘the key to the kingdom.’ I am grateful for this accessible new edition.”
―C. Andrew Doyle, Bishop, Episcopal Diocese of Texas

―C. Andrew Doyle, Bishop, Episcopal Diocese of Texas

"In seminary, I learned to exegete scripture, to craft a sermon, to think theologically. I did not learn how to lead a congregation. In
A Failure of Nerve, Ed Friedman invites leaders to cast a courageous and imaginative vision, to lead resiliently, and to be present and steady in times of deep anxiety; qualities of leadership more urgently needed now than at any time in my memory. My students find excitement and energy in the adventure of leadership Ed invites us to embrace.
―Gina Campbell, Visiting Professor of Worship, Wesley Theological Seminary, and Adjunct Faculty, Center for Family Process

"Perhaps more than ever, we need to prepare ourselves for increasing our maturity, which means taking responsibility for our own emotional functioning. As Friedman's mentor, Murray Bowen, succinctly reminded us, 'If you lower anxiety one notch, it's a better world.' We all owe thanks to Edwin Friedman for helping us in this process."
― Peter L. Steinke, author of
How Your Church Family Works and other books (from foreword)

"Reading this book is like discovering an unpublished Beethoven sonata or a missing play of Shakespeare. Ed Friedman was one of our most brilliant, original, and provocative thinkers across the field of therapy, ministry and organizational leadership."
―William H. Doherty, Professor of Family Social Science, University of Minnesota

"Ed Friedman is even more relevant today than at his death in 1996, and through these pages speaks again with his characteristically playful yet penetrating insight. This book offers a new generation of leaders the skills that promote prophetic spine and pioneering breakthroughs."
―Ed Bacon, former Rector, All Saints Church, Pasadena, California

One of the most important books I’ve read. It is not an abnormally long book, but it did take me an abnormally long time to read it. It can be slow going to get through, both because the concepts are so dense, also because it’s not a perfectly written book (published after the authors death and it squirrels around at times imho). Overall, I’ve never read anything quite like it, and it falls in the top five most important books I’ve read. It is written for leadership, but really has reframing implications for life and relationships in general. Last note, as a Christian pastor I recognize this book is written by a Jewish Rabbi (so there are some things I needed to translate for myself) and I felt adding a layer of Jesus' compassion helped the ideas synthesize into my context. Took a little extra work, but the work was very much worth it.

More than anything else, in our time we need strong leaders, Friedman says, as the result of a lifetime of counseling all manner of individuals and institutions -- families, churches, business, corporate, governmental, military, medical, you name it -- and coming to a fundamental human similarity in all their problems tracing to leadership and to our failure to understand that what effective leadership and therefore effective leadership training looks like. This book is the crowning achievement of his life.
By strong leader he does not mean "an autocrat who tells others what to do or orders them around, although any leader who defines himself /herself clearly may be perceived that way by those not taking responsibility for their own emotional being and destiny" and wanting a leader who will provide quick fixes and easy answers when there are none and keep everyone both safe and comfortable -- and who, in tough situations regress emotionally and form herds and mobs (the enemy of truly mature constructively thoughtful and deliberative democracies, as our Founding Fathers knew) and become incapable of seeing and choosing the sort of leaders really needed. That's why, in Jesus' insightful words, Jerusalems becomes places that stone and crucify even those sent by God to declare to the people what the present reality actually is and what's needed to move forward, rather than welcoming them. Friedman explains the human "emotional process" that accounts for this , what kind of leader is called for, and how those in a position to help produce such leaders might do so -- and how all of us can from our position, whatever they are, exercise difference-making leadership, incrementally.

This book has some profound ideas about leadership relationships societies. His theory about anxiety at the root of dysfunction is thought provoking.

Warning: he uses very complicated terms (even when simple ones would have worked just as well). But it’s worth the slog to get the big ideas.

This is a profound book, prescient, spot on, and a masterful course in leadership. As with all great books, it sets out to make a specific point, in this case, about leadership, but the ideas and lessons are applicable for understanding life and the human condition. I loved it, and will return to this book regularly for many years to come. It is foundational. It’s dense, hard to read, but well worth a slow and studied approach.

This is not a perfect book, nor completely scholarly, and not a business book. With that said, it comes closer to perfection on the subject of leadership than most and Mr Friedman has clearly honed his skill of observing interaction in systems over many years. The applications to life (including business) are numerous, yet this book is not a self-help in the traditional sense, as it will challenge you to think differently about what leadership is and looks like.

I would encourage any serious practitioner of leadership to take a deep gulp of this work and find if it meets the test of being true.

This book is far and away the best leadership book, if not one of the best books period, I’ve ever read. Friedman’s foresight into the state of leadership today is nothing short of extraordinary given the book was written over 20 years ago. He meticulously dissects how the lack of courage destroys leaders and those they proport to lead. He eviscerates leaders who hide behind data to justify their inaction. And he calls on us to be non-reactive, non-anxious, self-authoring leaders.

A true gem of a book. Life changing. Ground breaking. We’re all lucky this book was published after his death.

I read this book two years ago and I think of its lessons often. It's full of ideas I had never come across before, but that immediately resonated. It provides incredibly helpful insight for leading any group that includes difficult people. I definitely recommend this book.

I don't write many reviews. I am just over half way thoroughly reading this book and it is quite possibly the best leadership book I have ever read. Throughly practical, challenging, inspiring, thought provoking, stimulating. Like drinking fine wine. I don't want it to end. I'm a church pastor and entrepreneur. I have found it useful and relevant to all aspects of life. Thank you Mr Friedman.
