For vulnerable women and children trapped in cycles of abuse, there is hope. When a woman is feeling confused and angry about domestic abuse, where can she turn for help? This thoughtful, informative Bible Study provides a way through the confusion to healing and wholeness. Women can find light in the darkness with God's Word and an understanding of narcissism, enmeshment, and boundaries. This study can be done individually but we highly recommend the online or in person support groups available with this book. Leader's notes, videos, and training are available for facilitators of these support groups. The Second Edition provides updated graphics to provide a better understanding of the dynamics of abuse. This revised Second Edition explains difficult topics thoroughly, and takes you to a deeper place of healing.

I could never figure out what was going on in my marriage. Why it was so hard. I did many things to try and fix it. I prayed for decades, talked with other women, read dozens of book, and even couples therapy. Nothing seemed to work. I constantly had to work to keep the peace but even that was getting harder and harder as he would raise the bar. I did not realize I was in a domestic abusive marriage. That abuse is more than just a punch in the gut. Abuse can be verbal, financial and economic, spiritual, sexual, property violence and physical abuse. I did not know that he only wanted power and control over me. I am so thankful I was introduced to the Living Waters of Hope where I was in the Oasis Bible Study for domestic abuse. This workbook/bible study teaches you truth about what God intends for marriage. It has given me strength, hope and dignity while receiving healing for my broken heart. LivingWatersofHope.org will walk along side of you on your healing journey.

Excellent, powerful resource for Christian women and church leaders navigating through marriages defined overt and subtle abuse. Ladies, you are not crazy. This resource and the corresponding study groups are an investment in your sanity and safety.

This is an excellent resource for women in any stage of abuse, or for someone who just wants to learn more about it and the process of healing from abuse. It is based on Scripture and the Word of God making it effective. It is best when used going through the class because the ideas and nuances can be discussed and flushed out. Thank you for writing this book! I especially likes the healthy boundaries because that is important for everyone to know.

This book really didn't dig into the depths of what abused women need to heal. I wanted a Christian workbook for my group but this just didn't fit the need.

Over the years, I’ve been so privileged to consult with leaders and board members of nonprofit organizations and churches. I’ve met women and men who care very deeply about niche problems. Many problems and injustices are so horrific that most people just walk by. Yet these leaders—called by God—stand in the gap. Their courage, their creativity, and their endurance is simply stunning—and I thank God for them.

Diane Schnickels, the founder of Living Waters of Hope, courageously said “yes” to addressing the “dark world of domestic abuse.” She was shocked to discover that “one in four women of faith are being negatively affected by this silent and destructive dynamic at some point in their life in America.” One in four!

And, sadly, she also discovered that “many churches are ill-equipped to guide these victims in a healthy way,” and “these women are being further harmed by churches.” She writes that “advice like ‘stay, pray, and submit’ to the husbands who are harmful cause these women to feel unheard, alone, and to fall deeper into despair.”

One result of her concern is this important Bible study/workbook.

How do you help someone suffering domestic abuse? Start by reviewing the resources in Diane Schnickels’ “Oasis Bible Study.” The “Power and Control Wheel” on page 29 (from the Domestic Abuse Intervention Project) is heartbreaking, but so, so helpful. The 20 bullet points, “Symptoms of a Narcissistic Personality,” are revealing. Ditto the best and clearest definition of “gaslighting” I’ve ever read (page 33).

In addition to this 212-page workbook, Living Waters of Hope offers an abundance of resources for both individuals and churches. And good news! A second “Oasis Bible Study” is now available. (Look for “Finding Truth and Strength.”)

If your church has inadequate resources for vulnerable women trapped in cycles of abuse (and perhaps a blind eye to the horrific problem), I urge you to provide this resource for the pastoral care team. Help women find hope:

Lamentations 3:21-24 (The Living Bible): “Yet there is one ray of hope: his compassion never ends. It is only the Lord’s mercies that have kept us from complete destruction. Great is his faithfulness; his loving-kindness begins afresh each day. My soul claims the Lord as my inheritance; therefore I will hope in him.”

Frederick Buechner writes, “The place God calls you to is the place where your deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet.” What is your calling?

My initial class began in chapter 4, which was a great topic at that time. Each chapter/topic will speak healing as you go on your healing journey. The topics are great and relevant!
