This is an an amazing book. Very practical with a ton of takeaways with of course a lot of great baseball stories. There is a lot to absorb and I will probably read it a few times again. The reader gets a really good understanding of what it takes to get into baseball operations and what a prospective MLB employee has to be prepared for overall. There are many important points in this book: one of my favorite takeaways is having to figure out what separates you from someone else? Of course, not easy when just starting out in one's career but this book gets one to think about it. Another aspect of the book that I really appreciated is Mr. Geivett's honesty. There is one part where he does not do his best on an interview and he talks about it openly, which was helpful for many reasons. It is a good reminder we all make mistakes; but what is important is to be able to figure out what and why mistakes occur and how to avoid repeating them etc. While the book is for those seeking to work in baseball operations, this book is really good for any sport. The job market is not easy so any helpful ideas can only be an asset. I could go on and on about the book. Greg Goldsmith

I had some questions about working in baseball and wanted to ask Mr. Geivett to see what it was like working in the pros, and he directed me to this book. This answered all of my questions! It provides so much real life experience from all different positions that you can find answers to almost any question about being involved in major league offices. I'm really thankful that I was directed here and I'm thrilled to continue learning about moving up in the ranks!

I've spent time reading "career advice" oriented books before, but none like this. I couldn't put this book down for two reasons:

1 - Bill's experience speaks for itself, and he freely passes on what he has learned throughout the years in baseball. Very insightful.
2 - His writing style, and ability to intersperse well-told stories that drive home key points, is very engaging and entertaining.

You have to read this book if you are interested in working in baseball specifically, but there are lessons for those seeking a career more broadly in other professional sports as well. Additionally, if you are a baseball fan and want to know what goes on behind the scenes in an organization, with no interest in pursuing a career, read this book. He discusses organizational philosophy for player development, how scouts evaluate players with an eye towards building the championship team, and of course tells plenty of great stories about the Winter Meetings, life on the road as a scout, and conversations with well-known baseball managers. It's an entertaining read even if you aren't seeking a job in baseball.

    Highly recommended!

As an individual who devours content in the world of baseball writing, this is the most helpful and insightful one I have seen yet. The book is a must-read for interested individuals looking to gain employment in professional baseball, or professional sports in general. It serves as an incredible reference point for insight in to baseball operations from every perspective imaginable. With his intensive knowledge and experience in the game, the author clearly isn’t afraid to share his wealth of knowledge in all aspects of life in the front office from scouting and player development to general industry knowledge and career advice. His anecdotes from his professional career and experience give the book great life, and help the reader develop real-world applications. With business applications and general baseball insight, it would be a great read for fans and prospective employees alike!! Definitely an awesome selection!

As a recent college graduate that is steadfast in getting a job with an MLB franchise, in many ways I was lost before this book. Mr. Geivett does an exceptional job at not only explaining great nuggets about how to get an interview but interweaves his own anecdotes and stories that help push the book along. He dives into scouting and what actual goes into scouting departments and what happens on a day in and day out basis. The level of detail he uses as well as the stories he's able to create meaning from is incredible.

The book is basically broken into three separate topics the first is having the right preparation and extensive work required to attain an interview or employment. As I mentioned he delves deep into the process of scouting younger athletes and projecting their abilities into the future. Lastly, he goes all in on player development and the intricate processes and perspectives involved. He talks about the relationship between all the departments and so much more. I have read this book 3 times cover to cover and I was able to pick up new and different anecdotes each time.

If you at all serious about pursuing a career in baseball, read this book and you will know for sure. He doesn't pull any punches and lets you know that its anything but an easy gig. This book also can apply to so many different audiences. He delves into the importances of communication and philosophy of organizations. It is applicable to so many different people in so many different ways. I highly recommend this to a wide range of people but in particular if you think you want a career in baseball, please pick this up!
