A Humble Guide To Fixing Everything In Brand, Marketing, And Sales Hardcover – September 22, 2023
Purchase options and add-ons
While many don’t know why their sales and marketing are in a slump, some others have a general idea about the root cause of the problem. But, they don’t know what to do about it. And each new thing they try deepens their frustration with the current state of their sales and marketing performance.
Were marketing people fired? Was sales leadership replaced? Got a new CEO? Did you rebrand? Did you shift strategies and models? Change your message? Implement new martech? Build a new website? Switch agencies? Launch new products? Shift budgets? Bring people back to the office? Send them back home? And none of it has worked.
What if I told you that I know why your sales and marketing shit is broken? And, what if I told you that I know how to fix it? Would you believe me? And then, what if I proceeded to tell you exactly what to do about it?
Well, that’s what I do in this book. And, it will probably scare the hell out of you. Because what I’m here to tell you is that the way we used to do things in sales and marketing — the way most of us are doing things now — just doesn’t work anymore. The “blocking and tackling” era is over, and the road to hell is paved with performance optimizations.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 17, 2023When it comes to B2B Marketing, few are as adept at it than Bret Starr. Bret's book is a great reminder for experienced B2B marketers what's most important - delivering an exceptional customer experience. While traditional "blocking and tackling" are necessary, it was the traditional marketing and sales KPIs that dug B2B GTM leaders into the trap of "Connect and Convert" without first "Engaging" your customer. Without engagement, business becomes purely transactional and little, if any trust is built. For new marketeers, this book will help you understand what it means to leverage marketing and brand as a means to build engagement and earn trust. And it starts with standing out, being different and surprising and delighting your prospective and current customers at every touchpoint. This is a fun read, with lots of practical examples drawn from Bret's 20 years as a marketing agency leader. I highly recommend this book for any Go-To-Market (GTM) leader who is looking for a new and better way to build a long-term, sustainable, and differentiated GTM approach with your customers.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 25, 2023I like to believe that sales and marketing is something I get to do for someone rather than something I subject them to. That belief has been challenged in recent years. Mr Starr's "Humble Guide" helps explain why.
It also stirred the memories of my best professional moments, reminding me why I stuck with a B2B sales and marketing career through many ups and downs and what I love about this work. It can be a noble endeavor that creates value for real people when we design and deliver a customer experience—as described in this book— that’s well-defined and differentiated from competitors.
I’m using the models in this book with my colleagues and clients to push our collecting thinking, sense-making, and creativity in new directions.
It’s also a fun read!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 28, 2023I love this book. In 125 pages, Bret Starr has made what before seemed like a complicated mess of independent parts into a straightforward, easy to understand holistic customer experience concept that I can't stop thinking about. As consumers, our interactions with companies' brands, marketing messages, sales outreaches, products and customer interactions have become so predictable and routine that they fade into the background. We're jumping on and off the merry go round of CX, chaos pendulums in hand, and very few things grab our attention.
Starr uses relatable stories and an engaging voice to describe how companies that break these scripts and create positive defining moments against the unifying background of a consistent customer experience vision can easily boost lead volume and quality, sales conversion rates, customer satisfaction and retention - all at a lower cost - and dominate market share against competitors who are all doing the same old things in sales and marketing that just aren't working anymore.
Thank you, Bret Starr!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 29, 2023I really enjoyed this book. I've read enough about the slow evolution of marketing, I appreciate that Brett is pushing us to speed up the process. And, he isn't just talking abstractly, he's sharing concrete, real changes that I can implement today. This book makes me hopeful that I can dig out of the tool stack and KPIs I'm buried under to get back to what's important, a holistic customer experience.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 10, 2023Industry pundit Bret Starr does an amazing job at exploring and excoriating the imact that marketing over-automation has had upon the actual art and craft of marketing. In a parallel to what is known about management systems (they often don't do as well as managers), Bret explains in almost breathless prose how an over-reliance on a narrow marketing targeting and optimization model can create a marketing death spiral. If you've never spent an afternoon with Bret to hear his brilliant analysis on the industry, I highly recommend it. Truly an original thinker.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 26, 2023Countless "Aha moments" await within the pages of this book! Rarely have I come across a read that's so packed with actionable insights for my business. This refreshing departure from the conventional expectations of business literature makes it a must-read. Kudos to Brett and the entire Starr Conspiracy team for yet another resounding triumph!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 26, 2023So much packed into a quick and entertaining read. The perspectives in here have changed the way I approach marketing problems, from the everyday to the big-picture. We're all doing the same things, over and over, and expecting something different each time. It's long past time to Break the Script!
