Understand the real power of AI and and its ability to shape the future for the better.
AI For Social Good: Using Artificial Intelligence to Save the World bridges the gap between the current state of reality and the incredible potential of AI to change the world. From humanitarian and environmental concerns to advances in art and science, every area of life stands poised to make a quantum leap into the future. The problem? Too few of us really understand how AI works and how to integrate it into our policies and projects.
In this book, Rahul Dodhia, Deputy Director of Microsoft’s AI for Good Research Lab, offers a nontechnical exploration of artificial intelligence tools―how they’re built, what they can and can’t do, and the raw material that teaches them what they “know.” Readers will also find an inventory of common challenges they might face when integrating AI into their work. You'll also read more on:
- The potential for AI to solve longstanding issues and improve lives
- Learn how you can tap into the power of AI, regardless of the size of your organization
- Gain an understanding of how AI works and how to communicate with AI scientists to create new solutions
- Understand the real risks of implementing AI and how to avoid potential pitfalls
- Real-life examples and stories that demonstrate how teams of AI specialists, project managers, and subject matter experts can achieve remarkable products.
Written for anyone who is curious about AI, and especially useful for policymakers, project managers, and leaders who work alongside AI, AI For Social Good provides discussions of how AI scientists create artificially intelligent systems, and how AI can be used ethically (or unethically) to transform society. You’ll also find a discussion of how governments can become more flexible, helping regulations keep up with the fast pace of change in technology.

From the Inside Flap
Artificial intelligence is on everyone’s mind these days, as the potential and capabilities of the technology becomes ever clearer. But just as the possibilities presented by AI implementation expand, so to do the ethical and social pitfalls. How can we steer clear of the latter while taking full advantage of the former?
In AI for Social Good, AI scientist and Director of the Artificial Intelligence for Good Research Lab at Microsoft, Rahul Dodhia, delivers an up-to-date and insightful exploration of AI’s potential to change the world for the better. Bridging the gap between current realities and tomorrow’s possibilities, the author explains how AI really works and how to responsibly integrate it into our policies and projects.
In this book, you’ll find an easy-to-follow, nontechnical discussion of contemporary artificial intelligence tools―including how they’re built, what they can do, what they cannot do, and the raw material that “teaches” them―along with a collection of common challenges that you may face when integrating AI into your own work.
AI for Social Good explains how artificial intelligence became such an important phenomenon and how it can be used, both ethically and unethically, to transform society. You’ll learn how governments and regulators can become more adaptive and create regulations and laws with the potential to keep up with the fast pace of change in AI technology. You’ll also discover how you and your organization can tap into the power of artificial intelligence to solve longstanding commercial and social issues. Finally, you’ll explore the very real risks inherent in AI implementation and how to avoid them and other common mistakes and pitfalls.
Perfect for policymakers, project managers, and nontechnical leaders who work alongside AI scientists, AI for Social Good demonstrates how diverse and integrated teams can create remarkable products and realize tremendous results without compromising their ethical standards.
From the Back Cover
PRAISE FOR AI FOR SOCIAL GOOD
“An inspiring overview of what machine learning and artificial intelligence can already do to make the world better, and what can be done to use these tools more effectively.”
―ANDREW GELMAN, Professor of Statistics and Political Science, Columbia University
“Rahul Dodhia’s book AI for Social Good is a comprehensive exploration of this transformative field, which for technologically challenged, non-experts like myself, brilliantly demystifies this exciting field. It leaves you with the hope that AI will be harnessed for the good of the planet, and used ethically and responsibly. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in understanding AI’s past, and present as well as its profound influence on the future of humanity on planet Earth.”
―LOUISE LEAKEY, Paleoanthropologist, Turkana Basin Institute, Kenya
“A highly accessible whirlwind tour of how AI works, what it can and cannot do, and why it sometimes goes off the rails. You will find inspirational stories on how AI can be used for good, and cautionary tales that temper your hubris. Bringing his considerable experience to bear, Dodhia’s compelling nuts-and-bolts discussion of how to set up teams that make the most of this potentially transformative technology is a must-read. This book has something in it for everyone seeking to understand and make the most of this rapidly evolving tool.”
―JACOB N. SHAPIRO, Director, Empirical Studies of Conflict Project, Princeton University
“Just as the dawn of the nuclear age simultaneously shaped our hopes and our greatest fears for the future of the planet in the last century, so too for artificial intelligence in our century. The world’s deeply vulnerable environment and its communities are at a crossroad: one path leading to ecosystem collapse triggering extreme poverty and violence, the other towards balance and recovery. Our ability and determination to choose the right path is profoundly linked to the choices we make on the use of this nascent technology. In his writing, Rahul provides the critical thinking to channel our choices on the use of AI into a force for long overdue positive change.”
―EMMANUEL DE MERODE, Director of Virunga National Park
“A compelling book that explores the responsible use of AI as a force for positive and transformative change. It offers a valuable guide for those interested in leveraging AI to tackle the urgent challenges of our time. In an era where AI is both celebrated and met with significant apprehension, AI for Social Good serves as a great guide, offering practical advice, real-world examples, and a compelling vision for harnessing AI to address our most pressing challenges. An invaluable resource for anyone navigating the rapidly evolving AI landscape in the pursuit of societal betterment and serves as a resounding call to action, encouraging individuals to become part of the movement for positive change.”
―INBAL BECKER-RESHEF, Program Director of NASA Harvest

- Reviewed in the United States on June 3, 2024A thoughtful and thought-provoking tour of this revolutionary field. Like any tool, AI can be used for both good or ill. We hear a lot in the news about the dangers of AI, and this book does not gloss over them, but it is fascinating and inspiring to see some of the very practical ways AI can be used as a force for good in our world. A great introduction to one of the defining topics of or our age.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 1, 2024In a world where everyone seems to be posting AI-generated pictures and making jokes about ChatGPT, Rahul Dodhia has dedicated his book – and more importantly, his career – to the social good benefits of AI. In his book, Rahul shows how AI can predict floods to aid farmers in Pakistan, enhance food access through improved crop monitoring, and make medical screenings more affordable. AI for Social Good is written by an expert and practitioner who brings to life countless compelling case studies and examples. If you're eager to explore AI applications beyond entertainment, ads, and customer support productivity, set aside a few evenings for this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 2, 2024Easy to understand with lots of real world applications. This book is a helpful summary of how AI is being used around the world on projects that benefit us all (medicine, science, animal conservation, agriculture). It seems useful for business and science leaders, nonprofit and NGOs, and anyone interested in how AI can enhance and expand projects for social good.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 7, 2024This book tackles a topic of great importance in a language that is accessible to the average reader.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 13, 2024Dodhia acknowledges the real fear and uncertainty associated with machines learning to think and surpass human capabilities. Instead of focusing on their potential for harm he suggests ways that artificial intelligence can address societal problems that we have been unable to ameliorate. In the face of a “dystopian narrative of AI that builds on fears of economic setbacks and global war,“ he promotes a movement of AI for Social Good. After introductory chapters that give a history of the quest for artificial intelligence and a guide to the current technology, Dodhia provides specific examples of how artificial intelligence is already being used to assist in confronting environmental disasters and alleviating humanitarian crises. His approach is not naïve—he frankly discusses how artificial intelligence can foster and perpetuate disinformation and harmful biases. He argues for limiting AI through the imposition of regulations and safeguards that are grounded in ethical standards. AI’s influence on society will be transformative, though its direction and impact remain uncertain. As the Deputy Director of the AI for Good Research Lab at Microsoft, Dodhia is in a unique position to evaluate AI and help shape its direction for social good by insisting on an ethical foundation to undergird the artificial intelligence that is daily growing in ubiquity and capacity.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 24, 2024The premise of the book is to delve into how AI can be leveraged for good and what to be aware of, but honestly it was chapter 2 that got into how AI actually learns and works that I found most valuable. It was highly accessible for a non-technical person.

5.0 out of 5 stars An inspiring insight into AI’s “good side”
AI is a dominating force in the world today and one that’s impossible to ignore. So I delved into this book to find out about the more positive potential it can have. I found it to be a very accessible and engaging read. The author explains complex ideas in a way that's easy to understand, even if you're not a tech expert. The book gives real world examples of how AI applications are revolutionising sectors such as healthcare, humanitarian aid and environmental conservation. It has given me a much better understanding not only of AI in general but the brilliant transformative power that this technology has to really make a tangible difference in people’s lives.
