Orthopedic doc says this isn't good for mallet finger.

Orthopedic doc says this isn't good for mallet finger.
So, about 3 weeks ago, I completely messed up my left thumb. Would not go into extension, and was really sore for several days. After a week of doing nothing, I looked up what it could be and figured it's probably mallet finger. I scheduled an appt with an orthopedic surgeon for the following Friday, and he confirmed my diagnosis. However, in that time, I realized I needed to splint my thumb. I made a makeshift splint, and ordered these on Amazon. Now, I was using this when I went to see the doctor, and he told me this isn't a good splint for mallet finger. He told me that my thumb needed to be splinted in hyper-extension. The reason for this is because the extensor muscle needs to protract and the distal bone needs to retract so the tendon can meet the bone to scar down and heal. That made a lot of sense to me, and I realized he is likely right. The splint I was using off of Amazon held the thumb in a neutral position, and even in a slight flexion, which you don't want. And, the reason for this is the design: there is just too much play between the thumb and the metal splint. So, if you have mallet finger, you may just want to get a piece of thick aluminum, and bend it upwards like the splint in the pic, maybe add some foam or gauze underneath, and then use medical athletic tape. It's much more sturdy, and can be way more taut and fixated than the stupid velcro straps, which I'll come to next.I think the biggest con of this splint are the velcro straps. It just can't get tight enough to really fixate the thumb. And, worse of all, it just attracts so much hair and lint from my dog and environment, that it becomes an eye sore and loses performance. The splint can be easily removed even when the straps are tightened. They need a better system than velcro straps. All in all, I wouldn't recommend these. I tried to bend the splint upwards like how my regular one is, and it just kinked all over the place.
