On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century Kindle Edition

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 29,420 ratings

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A “bracing” (Vox) guide for surviving and resisting America’s turn towards authoritarianism, from “a rising public intellectual unafraid to make bold connections between past and present” (The New York Times)

“Timothy Snyder reasons with unparalleled clarity, throwing the past and future into sharp relief. He has written the rare kind of book that can be read in one sitting but will keep you coming back to help regain your bearings.”—Masha Gessen

The Founding Fathers tried to protect us from the threat they knew, the tyranny that overcame ancient democracy. Today, our political order faces new threats, not unlike the totalitarianism of the twentieth century. We are no wiser than the Europeans who saw democracy yield to fascism, Nazism, or communism. Our one advantage is that we might learn from their experience.

On Tyranny is a call to arms and a guide to resistance, with invaluable ideas for how we can preserve our freedoms in the uncertain years to come.

A Washington Post Notable Book

“We are rapidly ripening for fascism. This American writer leaves us with no illusions about ourselves.”
—Svetlana Alexievich, Winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature

“Timothy Snyder reasons with unparalleled clarity, throwing the past and future into sharp relief. He has written the rare kind of book that can be read in one sitting but will keep you coming back to help regain your bearings.”
—Masha Gessen

“Please read this book. So smart, so timely.”—George Saunders

“Easily the most compelling volume among the early resistance literature. . . . A slim book that fits alongside your pocket Constitution and feels only slightly less vital. . . . Clarifying and unnerving. . . . A memorable work that is grounded in history yet imbued with the fierce urgency of what now.”
—Carlos Lozada, The Washington Post

“Snyder knows this subject cold. . . . It is impossible to read aphorisms like ‘post-truth is pre-fascism’ and not feel a small chill about the current state of the Republic. . . . Approach this short book the same you would a medical pamphlet warning about an infectious disease. Read it carefully and be on the lookout for symptoms.”—Daniel W. Drezner, The New York Times Book Review

“As Timothy Snyder explains in his fine and frightening
On Tyranny, a minority party now has near-total power and is therefore understandably frightened of awakening the actual will of the people.”—Adam Gopnik, The New Yorker

“Snyder is superbly positioned to bring historical thinking to bear on the current political scene. . . . These unpretentious words remind us that political resistance isn’t a matter of action-movie heroics, but starts from a willingness to break from social expectations.” —
Jeet Heer, The New Republic

“The perfect clear-eyed antidote to Trump’s deliberate philistinism. . . . These 128 pages are a brief primer in every important thing we might have learned from the history of the last century, and all that we appear to have forgotten.”
—Tim Adams, The Guardian

On Tyranny demands to be read.”The Forward

“The manifesto we need. . . . Snyder detects dangerous trends in American politics that may be less visible to most citizens who cannot believe that our country, with its system of checks and balances, could succumb to illiberalism or authoritarianism.”—Darryl Holter, Los Angeles Review of Books

“Bracing . . .
On Tyranny is a call to action. . . . A brisk read packed with lucid prose.”Vox

20 FLAMES LIGHT UP THE FIERCE URGENCY OF NOW

20 FLAMES LIGHT UP THE FIERCE URGENCY OF NOW
This is a book perfectly suited to our time. It warns us that our fragile democracy can slip out of our grasp, almost over night, like a nightmare. Because we are busy, and easily distracted, the author boils down the warning signs into 20, with some helpful suggestions on what each of us can do when we recognize one of these 20 looming in our lives. For example, living in a "made up" digital world out of touch with reality in front of us, makes it easy for a would-be tyrant to fool us and declare what is "fake". What we can do is to firmly set aside our I-phones and other "devices" and read, talk to people of differing views, subscribe to newsprint, verify what sounds unlikely, etc. In other words, "pay attention." Another example: tyranny thrives on terror and crisis. Would-be tyrants use these situations as opportunities to remove our liberties. Our best defense is to remain calm and skeptical when we are told to give up our liberties for the sake of more security. This is an old trick - get wise to it .Snyder's chapter titled Stand Out particularly struck a chord. He begins with an excellent look-back to WWII, and how Churchill led the British to oppose Hitler, rather than following popular sentiment. In my own case, when Trump was elected, our neighbors formed a small group called Alameda4Impeachment. In the last 9 months, we have diligently "born witness" in our own town (and in 15 others) - getting resolutions passed urging impeachment of the president. In our own town of Alameda each of us had to stand up before the City Council, and for three minutes explain our concerns about Trump, argue that our country was in danger, and point out that council members take an oath to defend the Constitution. In Alameda and the other 15 cities so far, many people join us and speak up to urge impeachment, often people who have never done this before. Council members generally vote for the resolution, often unanimously, but many in the community think this effort is silly, a waste of time, or "completely useless." . Even some friends said this to us. Nevertheless we have persisted, and we know exactly what it feels like to "Stand Out". It takes courage, and a willingness to be laughed at. The threats and snarls from the "Trump base" come too, but they are to be expected. I was grateful to Snyder for reminding me that this is an essential part of fighting tyranny. Stand Out.In most cases, I found Snyder's book profound. I was grateful for his brevity - who needs more words than are required to get a point across? Every once in a while, he argued a point too briefly, or unconvincingly. For example, he argues that books are preferred to TV for news. I think this is too categorical. For example, the current Ken Burns PBS series on Vietnam is instructive in a way a book never could be. On MSNBC I watched Brian Williams interview with Snyder, resulting in my purchase of this book. Yes, one must watch with a discerning ear, but so too with reading, including the New York Times (which performed a terrible disservice to the Clinton campaign throughout the election, apparently even publishing data that originated in Breitbart news. SHAMEFUL).I DO believe we are on the brink of Tyranny, and that Trump behaves in the way intended to shock our sensibilities. Some among us are currently surviving by "normalizing" Trump, claiming he is just a particularly eccentric character among our many Presidents, and that "our institutions" will keep him in check. Others are psychologically numbed by Trump's repeated assaults on their sense of decency, and they retreat to travel plans, books, house and art projects, or devote themselves to all-consuming local causes - they are "waiting out the storm." I hope they get what they are waiting for - but I am dubious that waiting will work. Still others classify Trump as an annoying pest, best ignored. These friends watch a lot of sports, and declare themselves "a-political". Hannah Arendt talked of the "banality of evil." Tyranny happens while we are watching sports, working out at the gym, volunteering night and day at all kinds of good causes, hopping a plane to Paris - tuning out the NEWS.Obviously, life has to go on. Snyder is right that we must remain calm. But folks, I do believe there is a "fierce urgency of now." As the current saying goes, "stay woke!" Trump is NOT normal. Impeachment IS normal. It is the normal constitutional response to exactly what is going on right now. Some of you are bending over laughing when you see our impeachment signs. You are progressives, but you are "not there yet." Please read Timothy Snyder - it might wipe the laugh right off your face. And we need your help.

From Yale professor & historian Dr. Timothy Snyder (who specializes in the history of central & Eastern Europe, the Soviet Union & the Holocaust), 20 key lessons for regular Americans to learn on tyranny from the 20th Century, digest, and hopefully remember when they matter most. Short, sweet, and to the point, On Tyranny is such for good reasons.
For one, my twitter-fried brain has difficulty sitting still long enough to read long books the way I once did. I believe Snyder understands that has happened to many of my generation— those who use social media 24/7 & otherwise can’t be still.
Second, accessibility. This is short enough to read during a long wait for a medical appointment, and any high school student should be able to understand it. No real background knowledge is necessary. Anyone could pick it up and go. And **busy, hardworking, everyday Americans need the opportunity to clearly see WHAT HAPPENED IN THE 20th CENTURY TO ALLOW TYRANNY so they can IDENTIFY RED FLAGS IN THE PRESENT DAY**—all without needing to keep up with the details of daily news or the ginned-up partisan bs of the cable entertainment news nighttime soap operas.
Last, in the age of 24-hr news cycles and short attention spans, Snyder has managed to succinctly write 20 vital historical lessons in such a way that they are easy to remember. He does not appear concerned for his own ego, about appearing to be some superior intellectual. I don’t believe he wrote this $9.99 book (I got it for $7) for clout or money. He wrote it for us, for Americans. If I had the money, I’d buy copies to put in waiting rooms and hotel dressers alongside the Gideon Bible.
So, yes. Timely and important… when it was published in 2017. You’ll read the occasional passage and think “well, that ship has sailed”—but this (larger) pocket-sized book is not about defeatism. There is still much to be learned. Still timely & highly relevant.

If you doubt that history repeats itself -- or at least rhymes as Mark Twain said -- read this book. As the author writes, the parallels between today and the rise of fascism a century ago are striking. In twenty short chapters, each readable in a few minutes, we learn how to recognize the growing signs of tyranny, and how to resist it.

In Chapter Six we learn "Armed groups first degrade a political order, and then transform it." That certainly happened in Germany when Nazi Brown Shirts cleared opponents from the halls of Hitler's political rallies. On January 6, we saw violent groups claiming to be patriots storm the Capitol.

In Chapter Ten, the author describes the four modes truth dies in a democracy: 1) presenting lies as if they were facts, 2) the use of "endless repetition" where anyone pointing to truth became the enemy. 3) the use of "magical thinking" in which truth is turned upside down e.g. the only way we can lose an election is if it's stolen, and 4) "misplaced faith" when followers believe, as did many Nazis believed, "understanding is useless, you have to have faith. I believe in the Fuhrer." Today, Donald Trump has convinced his followers that “I alone can fix it,” that “I am your retribution,” and after the lost 2020 election encouraged his followers to “Stop the Steal,” violently, if necessary.

Chapter Nineteen urges every American to be a true patriot, even when it's hard. A patriot doesn't avoid military service when required. A patriot pays their fair share of taxes. A patriot supports the government even when your party loses.

There are many more lessons in this short, easily readable book -- all worth considering, and acting upon, as patriotic citizens during a time when our democracy is under great stress.

Very relevant to the political environment we are experiencing now! Read it twice! Not very long, but intriguing. The size of the book was a surprise. It’s like a 3 x 5 size. Easy to read and makes you think. I personally loved it.

This short book was written with a sense of urgency. The subtitle touts that there are 20 lessons (that in turn make up chapters) to learn from the 20th century, but it is clearly a misnomer. They are not lessons, they are calls to action BASED off lessons that we could learn from 20th century dictatorships. A prospective reader should also know that there is clearly an agenda in the book. The title should have indicated so, and personally I think it hurts its integrity. It was written soon after Donald Trump assumed the presidency, and it draws many similarities between the president's tone and actions with that of some 20th century fascism (or generally authoritarian) movements. In my opinion, the book most keenly expresses the fact that our democracy is NOT guaranteed, and no matter how strong our country is; or how enlightened and scientifically advanced it may be; we could succumb to the same thought-to-be archaic horrors that many countries in the 20th century did. The many riveting juxtapositions that were put to light are interesting, and make the book well worth it. Despite the agenda - and I honestly don't blame the author for having one - these lessons are invariably important and the calls-to-action are pertinent in any context. At some times I think the author may be too overzealous, but at others I think the zeal is warranted. Here is one statement I found golden: "The mistake is to assume that rulers who came to power through institutions cannot change or destroy those very institutions - even when that is exactly what they have announced that they will do." (pg. 24). Here's a statement made by the author where you can clearly see the implicit agenda: "Thomas Jefferson probably never said that 'eternal vigilance is the price of liberty'...". (pg. 27). That was a statement made by the current president. In this statement, the author is explicit: "Like Hitler, the president used the word lies to mean statements of fact not to his liking, and presented journalism as a campaign against himself."(pg. 73). The president might not end up becoming a dictator like Hitler or even have the intentions to become one, but the veracity is (and I think anyone should be able to admit to it) eye-opening. From what I remember, the comparisons weren't cherry-picked either, and that's good. Although this portentous text might someday become an antiquated omen in the United States, it would still be a good read even if you live in a country like Canada for example.

It's very topical. The language is simple. Historical references are poignant. Should be read by everyone interested in the future of the country and the world. The signs of fascist attack on democracy is everywhere, and it's winning in most countries, whether advanced or developing. This book enables you to understand the causes of why things are happening as they are. A must read. The only thing-- I wish Timothy Snider could expand certain ideas a bit more; it's too brief on occasions.
