A new series from Toni Anderson!

A new series from Toni Anderson!
4.5 Stars!Toni Anderson’s Cold & Deadly is the first book in her new Cold Justice: Crossfire series. This new series is a spin-off from her original Cold Justice series. Cold & Deadly is a standalone, and while some characters from the Cold Justice series will appear in the book as secondary characters, it’s not necessary to have read any of the books in that series first.Toni Anderson never disappoints me with her books. This story starts off with a bang and is filled with twists and turns while effortlessly blending in some romance.Ava Kanas is a badass rookie FBI agent. After her friend and mentor dies of an apparent suicide, she’s the only one that feels he was murdered. She stands up to her superiors to fight for what she believes, even though it goes against the way things are done in the FBI.Dominic Sheridan sees something in Agent Kanas. He can not only tell that she’s good at her job, but he is also attracted to her. He works with her to find the truth about what happened to their friend, while trying to fight their attraction to one another at the same time.I loved Ava and Dominic together. They worked well together while on the job, and I also felt they worked well together as a couple.I really look forward to seeing where this series is headed!

Special Agent Ava Kanas might be a rookie age but she knows beyond a doubt that her mentor, Van Stamos, did not take his own life. The problem is no one will believe her. After someone starts shooting at the agents at the funeral, Ava makes her beliefs known to the Director, which of course makes her boss look bad. That's Ava's biggest problem. She wants to be a team player but she doesn't have the patience to wade through some of the bureaucracy. They told Ava specifically she cannot investigate Van's death, but she isn't going to let a good man's reputation die with him. She intends to prove that Van's death was no "accident" while the big bosses try to sweep the whole thing under a rug.

Supervisory Special Agent Dominic Sheridan is Ava's total opposite.  Sheridan is a seasoned agent and his job as a hostage negotiator means he always needs to keep a cool head and be ready to wait things out. Van was also a mentor to Sheridan once upon a time. While he wants to believe Ava that Van did not commit suicide, Sheridan knows that there aren't always visible signs to give someone away. In fact, he is just getting tired of all the funerals that he has had to attend in the last year...which makes him realize that there have been way too many fatalities from his former FBI Office. But some of those deaths were nature and some were accidents, weren't they? Could there be a connection? Could someone be targeting FBI agents? Or is Dominic just channeling some of Ava's desperation to make sense of Van's death.

Ava and Sheridan start investigating these sudden deaths on their own, even after being warned off by their boss, which might just lead to an amazing break in the case or might mean they lose their jobs.

I have been trying to grab some books from authors that I haven't read before and sadly, I have been pretty disappointed with the stories I have read so far. This was on sale last month for $.99 (big spender that I am) and the description intrigued me. I decided to give it a try between deadlines and was happily surprised by how gripping the story plot was and how the characters drew me in. We had an interesting underlying story of FBI agents being targeted and while we did have small chapters from the POV of the killer, there really wasn't much to give away who they were and I found myself quite surprised when we got to the ending.  Just like in reality, Van's death and the possible FBI target (which they weren't supposed to be investigating) isn't the only case which Ava and Sheridan need to focus on so we are constantly on the move in this story.

We see the bureaucracy in the FBI at work in the different ways Ava and Sheridan are handled/disciplined by the higher ups in the agency. Ava is a rookie agent from a working class family who always wanted to be an FBI agent.  Sheridan is a seasoned agent but he also has a father who is a governor and a godfather who is the President. When things go sideways for them, Ava is threatened with suspension and Dominic is threatened with being reported to internal affairs. Even though no one would have been investigating these suspicious deaths without Ava putting her neck out with the higher ups, but her astuteness is considered a discipline issue for a female rookie.  In fact, it is Ava's ingenuity and her stubbornness that gets the right things happening time and time again.

We also meet some other characters who came in to assist when things heat up in the investigation who are from prior novels in the series which I am sure made fans happy and who intrigued me enough to want to read more on them.

This may have been my favorite book of the series. The characters were so endearing. It captivated and I couldn't put it down. The climax was so unexpected, I loved being wrong about who the bad guy was. You have to read all the books in the "Cold" series!!

So, I freaking LOVE the Cold Justice books by Ms. Anderson. They hit all of my reader buttons: engrossing stories, plausible mysteries, hot romance, interesting and well fleshed out characters, heroines who can take care of themselves but are vulnerable, heroes who are both compassionate and kick-ass. So I was excited when I heard about this book. I'm delighted to say it met all of my expectations. *happy sigh*

Cold & Deadly was so freaking good I couldn't stop reading - I read before bed, in bed, during 5 spare minutes before work, on my lunch break, and I finally finished it after work, ignoring everything else to read it. In all, I read it in just under 24 hours. I could not put it down. The downside, of course, is the wait until Ms. Anderson releases another book. :(

Now, I have to admit that our heroine, Ava, was highly annoying at first. She was impulsive, blunt, and reckless. But she grew on me over time, impressing me with her courage, her determination and stubbornness, her passion for her work, and her love for and commitment to her family. It helped that she was able to recognize her flaws and try to change her behavior.

Dominic occasionally veered into cliche territory, being a child of rich parents determined to prove himself, but Anderson fleshed him out and made him real. He recognized Ava's strengths as an agent, even when other agents didn't, and tried to help her, without overshadowing her or patronizing her. They made a good team professionally and personally. Dom was also loyal and committed. Unlike Ava he wasn't close to his family and he realizes during the story that much of the responsibility for that lies on him. He steps up and changes his behavior and attitude. A willingness to change and an ability to admit weaknesses were traits that Dominic and Ava shared.

The story itself kept me guessing, swiping my Kindle. There was more than one villain and I figured one out quite easily but the main one, nope. Anderson completely took me by surprise. And yet, when I looked back, the hints and clues were there. Bravo Ms. Anderson!

If you like romantic suspense,a realistic depictions of the FBI, fascinating characters and engrossing stories, you need to read this book, and the original series, Cold Justice. You do NOT need to have read any of the Cold Justice books in order to read this. It's just fine as a stand-alone.

Conclusion: GO BUY AND READ RIGHT NOW.

I really like reading & listening to the books written by Toni Anderson. These “Cold” series of books are stand alone romantic suspense books that can be read out of order or in order. The books build off of each other and the characters are intertwined.

Great story with interesting characters that are well developed. The psychological aspects make it very relatable. It doesn't sugar coat current issues. It is a page turner.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Story!

Toni never disappoints is right! Her novels are always the perfect mix of romance and suspense. And there's a depth to the story. The characters are well developed as is the plot. I too loved the plucky Ava - standing up for what she believed and going toe to toe with her boss. And it was nice that characters from the other novels made an appearance - as I really loved Mallory and Alex too!
This is the second time I've read this book now. I went to read more in the series, but couldn't really remember this book until I started reading again. (I even forgot who the villan was!) And the first time round, I didn't leave a review. So, I had to read it again to do that. But I enjoyed it just as much this time. Definitely a 5 star read!

The story of FBI agents work continues with Dominic Sheridan, hostage negotiator and rookie agent Ava Kanas.
As Agents are murdred around them ,the story unfolds and they become close and fall in love, all the while being targeted by the psychopath killer....keeping you guessing almost to the end of the book who the killer is. Don't want to spoil it by giving the plot away.
Great read ....

5.0 out of 5 stars Romantischer Thriller - schnell, spannend und nicht seicht!

Engaging characters and plot.

A few acronyms that could have been explained earlier, though.
In an exciting plot twist, it turns out that HRT is the hostage rescue team. Not hormone replacement therapy.
And BAU is the behavioral analysts, not business as usual.
