The Final Round Kindle Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars 15 ratings

A 1920s era boxer is on a fast track to becoming the heavyweight champion of the world. He stands toe-to-toe with Jack Dempsey, battles seedy managers and crooked promoters. Yet, despite his grit and reputation as one of the toughest fighters in the game, there is one opponent he can't beat no matter how hard he fights. Based on the incredible inspiring true story of one of the greatest prizefighters of the early 20th century, The Final Round takes readers back to a time when family, sacrifice, pride and love drive a man to the ultimate fight of his life.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

Of the many stories that I've come across, the story of Billy Miske is the most inspirational and the most heartbreaking. It had everything a good story needs, drama inside the ring and outside. I had to write it.

The Final Round is biographical, but it is not a biography. Unfortunately, much of Billy's life has been lost to memory and what is known comes from newspaper articles, boxing records, and stories passed down from friends and family. But it isn't complete. Through research and imagination fueled by the era Billy lived, this novel was written. The end result was an inspiring fact based story. I hope you enjoy it.

This is what the world of boxing is all about. Written in a way that sets you soaring on the wings of fighting success and then agonising with the despair of defeat. It lets you understand that results are not always dependent on the skill or ability of the fighters, but are dictated by the 'requirements' of the 'financiers' who, in most cases, care nothing for the welfare of the boxer or his family.

They are in it for the money... and nothing else.

This is a truly wonderful story of a boxer who stood on the edge of breaking into the big time but, at a crucial stage, illness and the dictates of others, and finally tragedy, intervened and took command of his career.

This book was a page turner from the very beginning. I had the sense of existing within the story through the vivid descriptions of 20th century life, characters, and hardships. I did not know about Billy Miske until I read The Final Round. The story was an excellent read, and introduced me to the seedy, exhilarating, and criminal undercurrent of early 20th century professional boxing. Miske's love for his family caused him to bear unbelievable pain and pressures. A true human story of triumph but not in the way the reader will expect.

What a great read. Gary has a knack for dialogue and pacing that made me burn through this book super quickly. Miske is a flawed human, but an inspiring hero.
