FROM THE FOREWORD BY PETER CANCRO, FOUNDER AND CEO OF JERSEY MIKE'S SUBS
I first met Walter Bond in early 2013 when Jersey Mike's agreed to be part of an episode of a Food Network series called Giving You the Business. Walter was the host of the show. After sharing our respective backgrounds and filming the show, I knew Walter would help our company going forward. Soon after, I asked Walter to join our Jersey Mike's National Conference as a guest keynote speaker.
Walter came on the stage and had an unbelievable presence. He captured the crowd immediately and received a thundering standing ovation. After that, Walter spoke at two other national meetings and several leadership meetings that were held with owners, area directors, and their managers. He continued to teach us how to recruit, develop, and retain top people so that we could stand apart from our competitors. Walter got our employees to understand our goals, adopt our company culture, work as a team, and express excellence.
Six years later I called Walter and his wife and business partner Antoinette to invite them to join me in our company's biggest initiative ever―to do something never done before in the history of franchising. Walter immediately said yes!
I asked Walter how we should communicate the message he was teaching throughout our national organization of franchisees. Like a true coach, Walter said to me, "Peter, that's easy. Just be you, and tell them what is in your heart and what you want to do and why."
...It was a pivotal moment in the history of our company that we will never forget. Spending so many days and nights together on the road with Walter to deliver the message of unity to our teams and crews across the nation was truly inspiring...
Cultivate reminds us to step back and check on how we are doing. For me, it was to take another look at our mission statement as a company. To give and make a difference in someone's life. To help raise people up together with the mindset to provide service to others. While those may sound like words, this book shows how we can turn those words into action that produces results.
After reading Cultivate, I can honestly say, "Yes, we are staying true to ourselves, and we are re-inspired!"
IT IS TIME TO "CULTIVATE."
THE SIX NON-NEGOTIABLE TRAITS OF A WINNING TEAM
COMMON GOALS
A winning team requires everyone focused and working toward the same goal together. Your goal needs to be clear and concise with buy-in and agreement from everyone.
COMMUNICATION
A winning team requires up-front, open, and honest communication with no hidden agendas. If something is not right, talk about it right away.
ACCOUNTABILITY
A winning team must consist of teammates who can own up to and admit mistakes without blaming others. Ownership starts at the top.
TRUST
A winning team is built on transparency and absolute faith in your teammate's abilities and motives. Trust is strongest when everyone values and depends on one another to play their own role with complete confidence in one another.
CHEMISTRY
A winning team requires a collection of diverse skillsets and abilities with like-minded individuals creating the perfect synergy. Talent is maximized to leverage everyone's skills for the good of the team.
COMMITMENT
A winning team consists of members who are completely devoted emotionally and intellectually. Because team members know why they are there and how they can help advance the cause, they are locked in and willing to do what is necessary to achieve the desired results.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 14, 2023A hardcover book that is a very interesting read. I like books that deliver messages on how to be great or do things at a high level. I would say some of this book is what you would expect. I do believe in the message and I can apply the thought process in everyday life. Great book that is applicable.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 19, 2024One thing that strikes me immediately about this book is the awkward editing choices - paragraphs all have blank space between them, there is a grammar error on the first pace of the preface, and some figures are strangely low-resolution, as though they did not use a large enough JPEG. Sentences change from past tense, to present, back to past - it reads as though they did not have a professional editor. This is all fine, and the message still comes through, but it's hard not to let the sloppy editing lower the credibility of the work.
The content is straightforward, easy-to-follow advice on leading and being part of a team. It's a quick, digestible read and definitely could be the basis of a training course or similar. If you have a golf interested, you might also appreciate that much of it is golf-themed.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 7, 2023I ordered this book because I’m just starting up a small business and I want it to be successful. I’m hoping this book will give me some good ideas.
I’ve only just begun to read this book but I read a little every night before going to sleep. So far this book has plenty of good advice on how to build a good team. The book is a pretty easy read, I should finish it pretty quickly.
I definitely appreciate all of the help I’m going to receive through this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 22, 2023There is nothing groundbreaking in this book but it is a great conceptualization of what makes a high functioning team and the qualities and behaviors necessary for a team leader. I think existing leaders will find this book to be an easy read with reminders of some of the fundamentals of leadership, but it likely won't challenge any of these types of leaders to think outside the box or come up with any new take aways. For a new leader though, maybe someone accepting their first management role, it is a nice way to introduce the traits of a winning team in an easily consumable way to then lead them to more in depth studies on various traits.

It offers practical insights and time-tested fundamentals of teamwork that are both accessible and applicable. Furthermore, the authors address the challenges faced by organizations in recruiting, developing, and retaining strong teams, providing valuable tips for employee and team member retention.
While the overall message of the book may not introduce groundbreaking concepts, it serves as a valuable reminder of the core principles of team building. - Reviewed in the United States on June 15, 2023I typically enjoy business-type books on positive ways to encourage the people who report to me and set a positive tone for the team. This book is written in a "fable" format, according to the authors. I think that is a misnomer (or a misuse of "fable" as a genre) but it is basically an idealized story about how a business leader seeks to embody the six traits the authors espouse. The stories are a bit larger-than-life, not something a real person could live up to, and the six traits are hardly new to the priniciples of successful team leadership. However, the message is a good one and if the stories make it more readable than an exposition of the material, hopefully more people will adopt these traits.
