We all want the autonomy and power to change our lives for the better and yet many of us feel stuck in the same bad habits, patterns, and short-term fixes. We know what we should do, but often we cannot get ourselves to actually do it.

In Unstoppable Brain, Dr. Kyra Bobinet debunks today’s over-dependence on performance-driven tools such as calorie counting, SMART goals, and likes/followers that attempt to motivate us into behavior change. These methods work well in the short term but have a long-term downside of negative emotions and harmful behaviors. Yet despite these poor results, we keep using the same performative approaches over and over. Something is missing.

Emerging research into the neuroscience of behavior and motivation has brought to light to a little-understood area of the brain, the habenula; possibly the most powerful controller of behavior ever found. If left untended, the habenula acts as a failure detector and motivation kill switch that can rob you of positive or lasting change, leaving you stuck in relapse, frustration, and suffering.

Understanding the habenula’s inner workings is must-have knowledge to obtain the freedom and agency for the life you long for. New research reveals that the habenula is a primary gating mechanism for everything that does or doesn't happen in your life, what you do or do not do and. It is among our biggest obstacles to change.

In this book, you will learn that an activated habenula can dominate even the dopamine and reward systems that the scientific world for decades has esteemed the most powerful behavioral drivers. We will explore exactly what is wrong with today’s overly used performative approaches and how you can free yourself to reach your optimal health and best life. Dr. Bobinet unpacks mounting evidence on the habenula and other discoveries that change everything about changing behavior. With this new vision and understanding, your natural tendencies, purpose, and passions can emerge organically and inspire permanent, satisfying, and healthy life change.

Unstoppable Brain frees you from being too performative for others and being too hard on yourself. It provides all you need to restore your sovereignty and empowers you to change your life and habits whenever and however you want. It offers a therapeutic dose of three “medicines” that help you go from stuck to unstoppable. This potent elixir is an antidote to recovering your innate motivation wherever you’ve been stopped by the past or overwhelmed by the future. Most importantly, this book gives you the key to unlock lasting change.

Dr. Bobinet shares relatable examples from her own story and impactful research studies in resounding instruction for a full, vibrant life. Throughout the book, her engaging voice, relatable vulnerability, and empowering message infuse readers with the tools and reinvigorated power to unlock true, lasting change. Become unstoppable!

Review

"In Unstoppable Brain, Dr. Kyra Bobinet merges groundbreaking neuroscience with practical wisdom, offering a transformative approach to behavior change. Having co-taught with Dr. Bobinet at Stanford University, I witnessed firsthand her profound impact on students, guiding them through the complexities of patient engagement with clarity and compassion. This book is a testament to her deep understanding of the human mind and its potential for change. Dr. Bobinet masterfully demystifies the neuroscience behind our habitual responses and introduces the revolutionary concept of the habenula's role in motivation and behavior control.

This work is not just a book; it's a blueprint for anyone seeking to bridge the 'know-do gap' and harness their innate power for lasting change. It's an essential read for healthcare professionals, educators, and anyone yearning to unlock their unstoppable brain."

"Unstoppable Brain by Dr. Kyra Bobinet is the book we all need right now! Who would have thought one could take complex scientific concepts and not only explain them clearly but sprinkle in the quotes and stories that result in a true page-turner? Through the concept of 'Failure Disease, ' Dr. Bobinet shows us how to recognize and overcome the many internal voices of failure that hold us back from living our best lives. Her approach, rooted in neuroscience, offers a fresh perspective on how we can think differently. The result is at once steeped in science but easy to understand as well as motivating and even inspiring. Dr. Bobinet's writing is clear and concise, making it easy for anyone to understand and apply the concepts to their own lives. She boils it down beautifully into a series of actionable steps that will help anyone achieve their goals. Unstoppable Brain is a must-read for anyone looking to live a more healthy and fulfilling life."

Joseph Kvedar, MD

Professor, Harvard Medical School

"A fresh, alternative perspective, Unstoppable Brain is a thought-provoking approach to motivation science. In it, Dr. Bobinet outlines the importance of the habenula for regulating failures and she shares practical concrete steps for reaching one's full potential. A must read for anyone who strives to make lasting and meaningful changes."

Jeni L. Burnette, PhD

Professor of Psychology, North Carolina State University

"As a physician who specializes in obesity, time after time I see patients desperate to lose weight, be initially successful, only to fall back into old habits and regain the weight. It's as if we are at constant war with ourselves. Finally, Dr. Bobinet compellingly shares new science that helps explain why, despite our best intentions, it's biologically so hard to reach and sustain our goals. This groundbreaking book examines the biology of failure and can help reframe the shame and guilt that follows when we invariably falter. Better than that, it gives us a roadmap on how to change our self-dialogue to achieve lasting success. Dr. Bobbinet artfully weaves science into a guide to help us better understand how our brains can work against us and how we can get on the same team to live our best lives."

This book offers great information about a part of the brain called the habenula. Having read many books on topics of neuroscience I was impressed by how easy to understand the writing in this book was. With real world stories she is able to bring a deeper meaning to the function of this part of the brain and the impact that it plays in people’s lives.

It was very affirming to hear a neuroscience backed explanation to why often strict goal/action oriented systems can end up being counterproductive. Intuitively I have felt that something about these performance based systems was so unnatural and has often caused me stress instead of helping me accomplish things in a more flexible way.

The information in this book truly has the potential to not only change your life on a personal level but also at a collective level. Highly recommended reading.

Dr. Kyra Bobinet's book "Unstoppable Brain" offers a new perspective on behavior change by delving into the neuroscience behind our habits and motivations. She is able to shine a light on the habenula, a region of the brain that plays a pivotal role in determining our success or failure in achieving lasting change. Through relatable anecdotes and compelling research, she demonstrates how understanding and leveraging the power of the habenula can break the cycle of self-sabotage, help us reframe failure, and unlock our true potential.

As I read the book, I found myself saying over and over again - "that's so obvious, why hasn't someone defined this iterative approach to truly changing behavior long term" - I am watching it in real time as my grandchildren learn to walk and talk, and with reflection it's how I have changed any habit throughout my life.

I have read more than 100 books on behavior change and habit change, and none have been more enlightening and actionable.

Kyra's elegant prose and her way of explaining the science behind her approach makes what could be a complex topic very easy to understand and actionable.

Wow! Where to start? This book is a masterpiece that seamlessly weaves together practical advice with scientific advancements regarding the iterative mindset and the habenula. Utilizing the tools in the book allowed me to build a number of healthy habits in my life, including mindfulness, healthier eating, and increased gym activity. I found it especially helpful to pair with Kyra's free app, Fresh Tri, which keeps you in the practice of setting and iterating habits. I would most definitely recommend it to anyone who is interested in living their best life or just learning a little bit about our amazing (or should I say unstoppable) brains. 10/10!

"I should have...", man I use that phrase a lot. And it's usually followed by me feeling like an idiot and a failure. And don't get me started on my imposter syndrome, geez! But omg, it's an actual thing? It's an actual failure 'disease'? I didn't even know that could be a thing, but learning the neuroscience behind this type of thinking has helped me so much to not feel like I'm always missing the mark. I'm learning how to reframe things and look at life like an experiment... it's not going perfectly, but wow is it better than the mindset I had before, and each day I make progress! Thank you for this book!!
