The Fathers on the Future: A 2nd-Century Eschatology for the 21st-Century Church Paperback – November 5, 2024
Purchase options and add-ons
Many today with an interest in the end times face a problem―they have forgotten the past. Knowing the history of eschatology is key to understanding its importance, how we interpret our faith, and our outlook on God and humanity. So why do so many overlook it and what can we do to correct this?
The Fathers on the Future uses a thorough exegetical and theological analysis to defend the foundation and structure of the second-century premillennial, futurist eschatology of Irenaeus of Lyons, and other church fathers. It makes a case for a contemporary Irenaean premillennial eschatology, arguing that it is a reliable framework for a biblically defensible, theologically balanced, and historically informed eschatology.
The Fathers on the Future includes these key features:
- Restores historical perspective: Recovers the forgotten roots of early Christian eschatology, emphasizing the teachings of Irenaeus of Lyons and other church fathers.
- Biblically grounded framework: Offers a well-supported case for a biblically defensible, premillennial eschatology, balancing theology and history.
- Clarifies and corrects: Clarifies complex aspects of early eschatology, strengthens key theological points, and corrects missteps.
- Fresh yet ancient approach: Presents an eschatological perspective that is new to modern readers but deeply rooted in ancient Christian traditions.
The Fathers on the Future begins with the belief that Irenaeus and other early church fathers represented a widespread and well-developed eschatology inherited from those who were close associates of the apostles. It then explores some of features of that early eschatology, clarifying obscure points, strengthening some elements, and correcting a few missteps. By looking back to Irenaeus and the eschatological emphases of his age, this book provides a new approach to eschatology today―new to contemporary readers but ancient in its original perspective.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 25, 2025I am a little torn on how to review this book. If you are expecting this book to be an exhaustive examination of patristic eschatology with some ideas on how to apply that to our modern context, then you will likely be disappointed by this book. It does do some of that but this book is primarily a defense of premillennial eschatology with a helping of the fathers. He does use the fathers, primarily Irenaeus, to argue a version of dispensational premillennialism is the most faithful to the Biblical text and the original interpreters of it. I expected the book to be more of the former, but once I adjusted my expectations I enjoyed it. I do think this is the best and most thorough defense of dispensational premillennial eschatology that I have ever heard.
There is a large amount of material that is online rather than being inside of the book. I don't know if I should consider that material as a part of the book or more as deleted scenes for those who want more. Some of them are full of the patristic material I wished more of the book had been and were deeply worth reading. I might encourage someone to seek those out since they are available for free if that is the primary driver behind interest in this book.
What I appreciated the most about the book is Svigel's humility and nuance. He is clear on which interpretation of the fathers and the scriptures he believes is the correct interpretation. But he admits where there is ambiguity and where there may be better options. In an age of overstatement, I always appreciate charity and humility in academic writing. He did give the best defense of a pretribulation rapture I have ever heard. He did not quite convince me, but he makes a great case.
I am probably biased in my enjoyment of this book. I have taken a class with Dr. Svigel and have a great amount of respect for his patristic scholarship. I am also a begrudging premillennialist so I don't mind the change in focus as others might. I would recommend this one if you want to hear a thorough defense of dispensational premillennialism based on the fathers. I might caution against picking this one up if you are only interested in reading a general engagement of patristic eschatology.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 29, 2025A very helpful discussion of eschatology that uses Biblical texts and Patristic sources to build a strong case for a premillennialist understanding. The author is fair in his discussion of other opinions while demonstrating a deep knowledge of Patristic sources. While his focus is on Irenaeus there is also an awareness of the outlook of other Fathers such as Justin Martyr. As well as being very useful and informative, the author is wonderfully encouraging and (for me at least) helps lift us out of a state of agnosticism about some aspects of eschatology to a more Bible based understanding.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 5, 2024There's a lot out there on eschatology, but most of it is driven either by making texts fit into theological systems and/or dogmatism about more difficult issues.
Svigel writes with an appropriate sense of proportion about what is clear in Scripture and what isn't, which arguments are strong and which aren't, and is fair to views he opposes. This book is important because it is clear, deeply grounded in the earliest teachings of the church, and faithful to a careful study of Scripture.
There is a ton of study that is condensed into a very readable volume, that is then supported by a wealth of supplemental online resources and articles with more in-depth support for various points.
A lot of opposition to premillennialism is based on straw-man arguments that would be difficult to maintain after reading Svigel - for that reason among others this is an important volume that anyone interested in the topic should own and read.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 12, 2025Svigel has provided readers with an absolutely incredible resource chock full of exegetical studies, examinations of the Fathers, and interaction with scholars of all ages. I couldn't ask for anything more!
This is a scholarly and quite dense look at eschatology, and is supplemented by the free "go deeper excuses" on his website that is very nearly as long as this book!
A quick note is in need. While the title promises examination of the Fathers, which is true, there is also a large amount of Svigel's own exegesis and careful analysis. While many of the fathers are consulted, the bulk of the writing grapples with Irenaeus, leaving perhaps a small feeling of over favoring one and not consulting as much with the writings of others by comparison. Still, this is natural since he, of the earliest fathers, dealt most with this subject.
Svigel addresses key passages, looks into commonly cited works of the Fathers, and shows an incredible knowledge of the subject matter. While I may disagree with a point or two here or there, this is an invaluable resource.
I can't recommend this enough.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 24, 2024Full of insights yet very readable. The thesis is essentially that Irenaeus’ eschatology is more right than wrong and reflects apostolic teaching. The “majors” of Christian eschatology are set forth earlier and masterfully elucidated. Some intriguing possibilities are set forth on the details of the age to come, and the more distinctive details are given robust defenses that will challenge those of different perspectives. Regardless of one’s eschatological leanings, or lack thereof, this is a must read for serious students on the subject matter.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 12, 2024I have benefited from many of Dr. Svigel's books such as "Retro Christianity" (Crossway) and the Exploring Christian Theology series (Bethany House). This is perhaps his finest work. I was able to get this book while I was preaching verse-by-verse through 1 Thessalonians and it was a great help to me. "The Fathers on the Future" is a bit technical in some areas, but Dr. Svigel's clear writing makes the material easier to digest.
