The devastating Black Rain has transformed the once-lush land into an arid wasteland, turning all water into a gel-like substance across the globe. Fresh, drinkable water has become the planet's most precious commodity, sought after by all. Some have chanced upon underground liquid reserves, while those with no choice but to drink gelled water become "Corrosives," disfigured by a verdigrislike substance covering their bodies.
The Golden Tower of Prince Boris shines above the otherwise derelict city of Torono, housing his Silkers army.
From the Golden Tower, Geo Woodman secretly leads the fight to save his clan and the people of Torono from the dangers of corrupt leaders and the hazardous climate.

About the author

Writer
Where
Costi Gurgu was born in the ancient city of Tomis (now called Constanta), on the Black Sea. He later moved to Bucuresti (Romania), then London (UK) and finally Toronto (Canada).
How
He first discovered SF through “The Overlords of War” by Gerard Klein, which is an unusual time travel novel. He then read extensively through a large selection of Romanian and European SF&F writers before reading his first North American author. He actually thought for many years that his first American was A.E. Van Vogt, before discovering that Van Vogt was Canadian and Isaac Asimov became his first American SF author.
Beginings
Costi began writing while in primary school, but got serious in high school when his German Language teacher, Nadia Dorian, wife of acclaimed SF author Dorel Dorian, read some of his short stories and encouraged him to enter his first writing group, Solaris. When a few years later some authors from Solaris decided to form their own writers group, one which would reflect the new realities of the SF market in Romania, Costi became one of the founders of ProspectArt group, alongside names like Cristian Tudor Popescu, Danut Ungureanu, Stefan Ghidoveanu, Dan Mihai Pavelescu, Marian Truta and many others.
Short Story Debut
In 1993, while in university, Costi made his debut in the Science Fiction Journal, with the short story Wonderful Asaara, twice awarded in 1994 and resold five times since. It was last published in 2014, in the Weird Worlds Anthology, edited by the late Stefan Ghidoveanu.
Awards
Costi has won 26 awards for his writing and has published over 50 stories in different magazines and anthologies across two continents.
Book Debut
His story collection entitled “Ciuma de sticla” (The Glass Plague) was sold to ProLogos in 1999. The Glass Plague won the Vladimir Colin Award and the Alexandru Odobescu Award for debut book in 2000, the annual award given by the Writers Union for best literary fiction.
His debut book was soon followed by several anthologies and shared-world novels coordinated by him.
Novel Debut
Costi wrote his first novel, “Retetarium” (Recipearium), in 1994 and was awarded the Nemira Award. It was published in 2006, by Tritonic Publishing Group. It gathered two more awards after publication, the Vladimir Colin Award and Kult Award.
Recipearium represents a new new weird that defies some grand SF unwritten rules, scaring most editors from approaching it. Michael Haulica, Costi’s editor at Tritonic took the chance, believing that any rule can be broken, if one does it knowingly and with skill. His faith in Costi’s novel has proven him right, as Recipearium has been twice awarded best novel of the year and has gathered a lot of literary and genre reviews, turning it into a critics and market success. Recipearium will be published in North America in 2015 through White Cat Publications.
Where
Costi lives in Toronto with his wife, Vali, in a flat turned design studio/art workshop.
European Writer
Although he wished there wasn’t any difference between European and American genre writing, the reality is different. Costi has learned the differences and the specifics, and wishes to appeal to North American readers as he’s done with his Romanian ones. He hopes one day to combine the two different cultures and produce glorious hybrid stories that will appeal to both readership groups equally.
Until then, he only insinuates some Romanian fantastic and mythological nuances into his North American stories.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 14, 2025Costi Gurgu's Green Corrosion is a science fiction novel that is giving me sleepless nights. Initially it gave me the impression that it is more fantasy than science fiction.
The novel is set in a world where a Black Rain has turned all water into a strange gel-like substance. This substance is poisonous, causing disfigurements in those who drink it, which are collectively called "corrosion." Those suffering from corrosion are referred to as "corrosives." To add to their troubles, the treatment is super expensive. While the suffering caused by corrosion is described in detail, there wasn’t much explanation of its cause for a significant portion of the story—thus making me feel that it leaned more towards fantasy than science fiction (nothing wrong with fantasy; it’s just that I have a different frame of mind for the two genres). However, some explanation was offered later, such as:
"If you asked any twentieth-century scientists about the four states of water, they’d correct you by stating that there are only three states. In the early twenty-first century, Elmer Fuchs, a physical chemist at Graz University of Technology in Austria, conducted experiments into water properties and successfully simulated, for a whole forty-five minutes, what we today call gelled water."
I found the theme of corrosives particularly captivating. For some reason, it reminded me of victims of leprosy. Stev's story arc offered glimpses into the lives of corrosives, as his wife Sara was suffering from the condition too.
Anyway, Black Rain had other effects as well. For example, it destroyed most of the wood, making it a rare material. It also ushered in new social and economic systems where wood could be as precious as silk and political strategies were based on treatments for corrosion. In short, one could say the Black Rain marked the distinction between the past and the present. The book follows many of these political maneuvers through Geo, a woodman ambassador. However, I must admit that I found other themes more interesting.
That’s not all. This book was an incredible adventure full of possibilities and ideas and often contained twists when I was expecting none:
"He believed the new Rain would not only bring death and destruction but, like the first one, the Black Rain, it would bring transformation. Metamorphosis. Evolution."
The prose was good, with occasional sparks of brilliance, and the characters were excellently developed, though I have a feeling that Geo's character could have been a bit more complex. The story made me hate a character—Pi—and that’s always a sign of good character development. My favorite character in the story has to be Bree:
"She was always cheerful and full of energy, as if her grandfather, the dark and morose Greg Rumi, had had nothing to do with her genetic material. Where he seemed like he was always plotting to assassinate someone, she was a light and luminous feather, floating on a gentle breeze through the laboratories."
In short, Costi Gurgu's Green Corrosion is an excellent science fiction novel that I wholeheartedly recommend to lovers of dystopian worlds.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2023"Green Corrosion" by Costi Gurgu is a gripping dystopian science fiction novel that delves into the consequences of environmental devastation. The narrative unfolds in a world where the catastrophic Black Rain has turned water into a gel-like substance, making it the planet's most coveted resource. Gurgu's vivid descriptions create a chilling picture of a post-apocalyptic society where grotesque mutations, unsettling creatures, and corrosive water are commonplace.
At the center of the story is Geo Woodman, a complex protagonist navigating power struggles and corruption in the city of Torono. The tension escalates as Geo negotiates with the corrupt ruler Prince Boris, and the mysterious Lady L adds layers of intrigue by unraveling the secrets of the Silker Society. Gurgu's skillful prose brings this decayed world to life, immersing readers in a narrative that explores survival challenges and the intensification of power dynamics in the face of dwindling water sources.
"Green Corrosion" is more than a traditional sci-fi novel; it challenges conventional genres and addresses pressing issues like climate change and sustainable development. Gurgu effectively blends intellectual stimulation with emotional engagement, presenting a socially relevant narrative. The novel prompts readers to ponder the delicate balance between technological innovation and ecological sustainability. Overall, it's a must-read for those seeking a thought-provoking and emotionally engaging science fiction experience.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 30, 2023I love love love a good book about the future. If it is a sci-fi and dystopian book, even better! This is one of those books and I loved every page of it! This book is incredibly suspenseful and I had chills as I was reading it. It immediately drew me in and I was ready to tackle the chilling and haunting subject matter. Let's get into more of what the story is all about.
This book takes place in North America. In this time in society, water is running low and people are at each other's throats to get their hands on it. The world has been terrorized by Black Rain and the world's drinking water is disappearing so quickly. The rain actually has started to turn the world's water into a strange gel-like substance. This is why it is impossible for humans to drink it now.
One of the main characters in this book is Geo Woodman. He is ready to take on the challenge to help his clan get the drinking water that they need. He has to get them through horrible conditions in order to save them all. He is met with a lot of obstacles on the way and this is where the book gets really good. There are so many challenges that Geo has to get through and I was on the edge of my seat as he helped his people get to drinking water.
The writing in this book was wonderful and I was hooked immediately to this story. I would love to read more of the author's work because I really was pulled into this book. There were some subtle hints about climate change and global warming. We have seen a lot of these types of books before and even if you think you have read this, you haven't read anything like Green Corrosion. If you love the post-apocalyptic books, you are really going to love this one. I wouldn't steer you in the wrong direction. I would suggest to anyone that loves this genre, you need to read this book. It will make you think about our world today and just what could happen if we do lose our drinking water. It isn’t so far in the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing & great as expected!
Excellent new novel from Costi Gurgu set in a dark dystopian future with a lot of mutagens agents and creepy creatures that, in a way, very much reminded me of China Mieville`s, New Crobuzon City.
Anyway, this is to be taken as a compliment, not a direct comparison, because this book has all that it needs to be a hit for every one of it`s readers!
The plot is quite intricate, with some predictable moments, true, but nothing exaggeratedly disruptive and, also, the pace of the novel stays very alert, with very few moments of respiro.
The characters felt convincing, only sometimes, Geo looked untrained and naive, to counter in some of the other scenes that he had some backup plans, ready to go at any moment of danger. But outside of this I liked a lot the interactions between the characters of the book and, also, let`s not talk about the revelation from the ending of the novel and the way the things were nicely and smoothly wrapped up until the last page.
Got the paperback version directly from the Amazon, it wasn`t listed yet on ebay, the shipping taxes were something, but at least I got the book in like three days from my purchase (with DHL).
With two novels out, and what gripping & daring books(!!), in a span of a few months, this year is proving to be an amazing one for the canadian (born in Romania) writer Costi Gurgu!
If you haven`t read anything by him, now is the time to do it! What are you waiting for!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars An thought provoking sci-fi thriller
Climate change and Sustainable development are the core questions before the whole humanity.Costi Gurgu' s novel "Green Corrosion" deals with the same question. It is a sci-fi thriller that revolves around the plot where the planet earth is plagued by a Black Rain turning water into a gel and destroying the whole ecology. Geo Woodman is on a mission to protect his clan and to secure drinking water for his people.
The apocalypse has led the whole humanity into a war for survival.
The story line does not seem to be a pure fiction and one wonders, if we do not stop exploiting our environment indiscriminately, it may become true in near future.
The narrative is incredibly intriguing, engrossing and thought provoking. Inspite of the intricacies of the plot the author has with his narrative held every thing together.
The novel has got a befitting title and perfectly portrays the riveting plot.
It is one of those reads which keeps you hooked and races your heart beat at every twist.
A much recommended read for thriller fans.

4.0 out of 5 stars There are no spoilers of any kind below!
"Green Corrosion" by Costi Gurgu is a compelling and thought-provoking work of dystopian science fiction that delivers a haunting portrayal of a world on the brink of collapse due to environmental devastation. Gurgu's narrative masterfully immerses readers in a bleak future where clean water is the most precious resource, transformed into a gel-like substance by the catastrophic Black Rain. The author's meticulous attention to detail paints a vivid and chilling picture of this post-apocalyptic society. The world is plagued by grotesque mutations, eerie creatures like the Night Hunter, and the corrosive water that brings deformities and despair. Gurgu's descriptions of these elements are bone-chilling, pulling readers deeper into this nightmarish world.
At the heart of the story is Geo Woodman, a complex protagonist whose yearning for power and recognition is driven by fear and ambition. His character is beautifully woven into the narrative, and as he negotiates with the corrupt ruler Prince Boris, the tension and intrigue intensify. The addition of the enigmatic Lady L adds depth to the storyline, unveiling hidden aspects of the Silker Society and delving into taboo subjects like Christianity. Gurgu's prose is immersive and skillful, bringing the grim and decayed world to life. The pacing is well-executed, with secrets unveiled gradually, heightening the stakes with each revelation. The novel adeptly explores the challenges of survival in a world where the scarcity of preserved water sources intensifies power struggles.
In conclusion, "Green Corrosion" is a thought-provoking and socially relevant sci-fi novel that effectively blurs the lines between traditional genres. It offers readers a harrowing glimpse into a world marked by environmental degradation, corruption, and the consequences of unchecked corporate power. The story challenges conventional notions of progress and underscores the delicate balance between technological innovation and ecological sustainability. This novel is a must-read for enthusiasts of science fiction that's both intellectually stimulating and emotionally engaging.
Thank you
Happy Reading

4.0 out of 5 stars A dystopian sci-fi fantasy novel
Well written and with an interesting plot, this novel flings the reader into a post apocalyptic future earth where dwindling fresh water supplies and a terrible scourge create the dynamics of a brutal tribal society.
An exciting and well paced story with rich characterisation.
